It is?

Let's see:

  • Lighter
  • Smaller
  • New keyboard
  • Faster Processor
  • New Function pad (magic)
  • Better graphics (according to rumor).
  • I'm betting battery life equal or greater than older model.
  • USB C ports

Naw it's really no news at all...

Those have all been rumored/leaked before...since spring. For many, many times. And most of them (faster processor, graphics, battery...) are simply just common sense.

That's ok, because you're gonna have to bring a knapsack or computer bag along anyway for all the other dongles and adapters you're ALWAYS ALWAYS gonna need to bring along to be prepared. Looks like i'll have to dig out my old SD card plug-in that I happily threw in the drawer a few years ago when I bought my old Mac Book Pro. Oh wait its usb2. Dang. Is this moving forward?

Besides, it's very important for Apple to be able to continue to eliminate built-in hardware functionality (while continuing to hold the line on the price tag) to keep their Magical profit margins.
If they actually included said dongles as free accessories for newly bought MBPs then I wouldn't complain but Apple is a bit of a money grubbing Shylock when it comes to freebies. Although, having said that, the iPhone 7 gave me a bit of hope...

What if the whole keyboard is like the strip? I mean. Come on. Most people use a phone/tablet without real feedback for key presses,. and since we know that Apple has the 'courage' to remove stuff...

About the only thing that would make sense with their recent keyboard build decisions is if the entire panel is a customisable glass keyboard.

That I could buy. What I can't buy is it would involve some long term thought and plan I'm yet to see any evidence of in Cook's Apple.

First you are assuming the new MBA is not retina, it has the same old keyboard, keeps the USB ports and Magsafe. You know what they say about people who "assume" too much!

As far as your "adaptability" goes, why is it so many, myself included, have had zero problems with using both the old and new keyboards?

I just think you're here to complain about things you have no control over and the release of the 2016 MBP is your relief.

Well, MANY haven't gotten used to the MB keyboard even after months. Heck, I haven't gotten used to the iPad keyboard even after YEARS.

There is zero pointing to the MBA getting retina. That's what I keep saying, Apple - unfortunately - is not gonna introduce the computer I had been hoping for, on Thursday.

As far as the complaining...I just claim the same right as all those people whining about ports and SD slots ;)

I highly doubt if they did remove ports that it would come with a free dongle. It made more sense for the iPhone.

in regards to the keyboard, i hope it isn't the butterfly one, i have tried it numerous times and can't get on with it at all

Innovation

Touch buttons without physical click will be a total pain for anyone doing real work. Will be interesting to hear them try to market this as a pro machine.

Thank you for digging and posting that! I could have sworn I've seen this before on an old laptop.

Looks to be the Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon (2014): http://www.laptopmag.com/reviews/laptops/lenovo-thinkpad-x1-carbon-2014#. The review calls out that the Adaptive Keyboard Row section was much less useful than traditional function keys or at-least that's one persons perspective.

Just hope Apple's execution with this is awesome and I don't have to deal with the magic toolbar getting in the way.

The only real issue with changing the USB ports and dropping the memory card slot is the short term inconvience as technology changes to the new stuff.

Example:

I was given a video from a VHSC (many of you hardly remember what that is) to copy and edit on my Mac. To get the VHSC video into my Mac took four steps:

  1. Using a VHSC to VHS adapter I used an old Sony VHS player I keep for such things (I also have a Sony High/DV8 player for the same thing).
  2. Since the VHS does not have a direct way to play into my Mac I taped it to a Mini-DV player via it's proprietary AV cable.
  3. The Mini-DV I have is made by Canon and while it has a USB port Apple (Ok it's who Canon does not provide a driver to support thier ancient video device) does not support the USB interface with this device. Since it does have a Firewire and my Mac has a (never used) Firewire port (Apple doesn't even sell the cable anymore).
  4. Using Final Cut Pro and the Firewire I then import the video as an "Event" in FCP.

The moral of the story is in the very near future people will be complaining about losing their USB C ports for something else (probably entirely wireless) and will hear stories about how great the old USB A was and quite possibly will be wondering how people dealt with those clunky chicklet sized, clackety/noisy and long travel keyboards.

Move on or be left behind.

Yes...but here's the thing. While I really hate the MB keyboard - and I've tried it out many many many times at the store and for more than just a couple minutes - yes, I MAY get used to it after a while. But I also own an iMac with a Magic Keyboard, my main work machine at home. Switching back and forth between such vastly different keyboards does not help at all with adaptability. And that's really one of the reasons why I don't get why Apple is doing this, either way...why didn't they adapt that keyboard style in the Magic keyboard if they were planning on having it in all their Macbooks all along.

It's just a usability nightmare.

I transition between my workstation with a Happy Hacking Keyboard Pro (long travel, mechanical switches) and my rMB all day every day. It's a non-issue.

The magic toolbar actually looks like a nice piece of innovation. Well done Apple!!!

And as long as I get Magsafe, HDMI, and Headphone jack I am willing to spring for dongle/connectors for the other stuff (old USB, FW, etc.).

Now as long as we can change out memory/battery, I'm in.:D

Are we sure? The Magic keyboard is also thinner than the old one. That I could live with. Butterfly...ugh. Not sure what I'd do.
What do you expect? That they developed a new keyboard just to have it on the MB? Suggesting one is superior and only one has it?
Apple doesn't have such different ways of doing things across models for such important/core parts.

Loving my early 2015 more and more. Well see on Thursday if I get buyers remorse or not. All USB-C is a no go for me since all my stuff uses old USB port including my iPhone 7+.
Have a look at your iPhone again, I'm sure it has as many USB ports as it has Headphone Jack's.

I'm sad that they went back to the "MacBook Pro" text. It looked cleaner before, like an iPhone.
And the MacBook Pro branding on the screen returns.
Yes this really surprised me. Unquestionably a step backward.

This new MacBook Pro looks to have absorbed a lot of traits of the consumer-level MacBook. Worrisome for a Mac that shouldn't be considered consumer-level.

I searched for evidence of Kabylake processor support in 10.12.0 and 10.12.1, but found nothing so far. No frame buffer driver. No (XCPM) processor power management. No PCI device-id's. Ergo. The A170[6/7/8] will need to come with a special build of macOS Sierra.

Man oh man. There are no KabyLake parts powerful enough for a MacBook Pro. They will not be released by Intel until 2017.

I'm happy for you. Yet, it is or may be an issue for other people. People ARE different, ya know? How come it's so hard to accept...yet everyone freaks out when you say not everyone's using SD cards...
