Yeah...not happy about that.
Me neither I'm an author, and after trying the rMB keyboard, I can confidently say it is one of the worst keyboards around. You might as well be tying on tablet keyboard like that on the iPad Pro. Yuk.

Then again, Apple haven't placed much importance on quality keyboards for a while, as seen by the laughable one that comes with iMacs.

The sad thing is that it wouldn't surprise me if this is part of a larger move to force people to use their crappy keyboards, by having the OLED strip on them, and making certain features of the OS only available through Apple certified keyboards.

That keyboard and the magic tool whatever will make me gladly buy either an older version of macbook air/pro or a windows laptop.

I'm really fed up with the new direction apple is heading. This keyboard and toolbar is not useful for and shouldn't be marketed to pros. You're loosing loyal customers apple. And i'm sure you don't give a damn since you sell sh loads of iphones.

Er ... what?

I'll explain in a more detailed way:

1. Macbooks are more affordable in USA compared to the rest of the world;
2. It's easier to upgrade your computer in USA, so chances are that you won't keep it for more than 4-5 years.
3. However, it makes sense keeping Macs for around twice this time outside USA, because they cost twice or even more in other countries.

Question: how will age these OLED screens when used for 8-10 years?

Just imagine the mess of that Magic bar when you are opening 10 apps at the same time .

This whole "usb-c must get a dongle for every standard connector" is really not a thing I like. I was so thrilled when they finally included the hdmi and no need for an adapter.

It's called PROGRESS.
You let old tech. and old mindsets die off to move forward ;-)

With so many people complaining about the lack of travel on the newer keyboard i do wonder how they use an iPad or iPhone with zero travel, they must be impossible to use.

I love the new keyboard. It takes all of five minutes to get used too... If that.

Haters who hate on innovation.

Go get you one of these...

I still have one , I still use it occasionally and the keyboard is a damn sight better than the butterfly OR the current chicklet.

Progress is not always better. It's a pretty naive belief shared by people from the nineteenth century, influenced by positivism, evolutionism and the findings of science of that time, which believed that human will always produce better things by employing his/her reason.

Kind of funny to see nothing but bitching and ignorance on these forums.
Btw;Mac sales account for tiny 5% of Apple revenue. If Apple decided to stop entirely manufacturing and development of PCs, they wouldn't even notice the difference in their profits.
PS; All I wish for is 4 USB C/Thunderbolt ports and removal of old legacy USB 3, SD card reader and headphone jack.

All I wish for is the removal of the legacy keyboard from the next device you buy.

Why do you even need a laptop? It seems to me that you can fulfill your computing needs with an iPad.

If it was out several years ago, you can't even put Windows to safe mode by pressing F8.

The side bezels are only a little bit thinner, the speakers are smaller and the keyboard is wider, even the spaces between the buttons are a lot thinner.

I'm hoping for a bigger trackpad (hopefully that supports Apple Pencil)

Buyer's remorse is showing.
No i'm serious

Well...that is extremely underwhelming. Touch ID is nice, but the screen looks identical to the current model. Same bezel, likely same resolution. I was hoping for a smaller footprint or a larger display...but we get neither.

Also, I really hope they have improved switches in the butterfly keyboard that don't get stuck every other week like my current rMB.

What are you talking about? The space next to the keyboard is clearly smaller than on the current rMBP. So I think they did decrease the footprint.

I am not really excited. I expect Thursday in fear. No USB-A, no HDMI, AND no ESC KEY! Think I will have to switch to Emacs full time, as I suspect it won't work very well with Vim, since I smash ESC daily while using vim.

You're assuming the picture is not just a 13" with speaker grills and a "Removing the Esc key requires courage" Touchbar

Just remap the ESC button to another physical button, surely there is a button you almost never use? I remapped the button under ESC already since i never use it, the § have now became a single button for creating $, dont know which character it is default on your keyboard layout but you'll should find a key you could remap to ESC

It's a lot higher than 5%. Yesterdays results had it at 12% of revenue or $6 billion for the last quarter. I'm sure even the mighty Apple would notice the loss of over £24 billion a year in revenue.

This is very dissapointing, I think the "Think Different" thing at apple has been taken way out of context, this really isolates pro users that use function keys and esc key, also i think the speakers at the side of the keyboard look ugly!! Glad i bought the last macbook pro and had a product that had Steve's influence, in the 1998 keynote when Jobs returned to apple, he said the priority was to make things better over different, it seems to me the latest products are not making things overall better but isolating core users by removing good functionality. For the first time ever im not excited about an apple event. And as for the butterfly keyboard mechanism, uggh...

Why don't you try it first before moaning? It's embarrassing how some people are so scared of change.

How do you know SJ didn't have an influence on the new model...?

I think the removal of HDMI and the SD card slot, together with the switch to USB-C only will make this machine very annoying to use until every device in the world transitions to USB-C, including projectors, TVs, peripherals, etc... That's going to take years. Until then, don't forget your:
  • USB-C SD card reader that you probably don't have yet
  • USB-C to HDMI or VGA adapter for when you need to use a projector for a presentation or a TV for video editing
  • USB-C to regular USB adapter for, let's face it, everything
  • USB-C to Thunderbolt adapter for if you use an external monitor
Personally I really hate adapters, and I hate paying money for them and having to bring them everywhere I go because who knows when I'll need them. Nothing's more comfortable than plugging in my Mac directly to my HDMI TV for video editing, or putting an SD card slot in it when downloading photos during a shoot. I've never had to use an adapter with my current rMBP. I remember when the only video port on the older machines was the Mini DisplayPort which was and still is incompatible with everything, so I always had to have the adapter with me.

Having 4 USB ports would be great, except 1 will be occupied by your charger, and 1 by something that was built into previous computers (SD card slot, an adapter for HDMI or Thunderbolt or VGA, etc) so you'll just end up with pretty much 1-2 free USB ports, which is as good as or worse than what we have now.
