and at the same time they demand messages to be end to end encrypted, how would that even work if I am sending a message from WhatsApp to iMessage. What if I am a iMessage user, I never even accepted the TnC of WhatsApp for Meta to collect / process my iMessage reply.
WhatsApp is available on all platforms, which is the point.

You've already admitted in another of your posts that it's the developer that chooses, not Apple. You said that if the developer wasn't making enough $$ in another store they would go back to selling the app in the App Store.

yes. that is called freedom my friend.

unfortunately aweome devs like Litchie had their apps booted from the app store. so he needs some of that freedom.

When I get the blue bubble in iMessage I know it is far more secure than the Green Bubble.
The iPhones are now very affordable so people that want them can get them and be part of the iPhone ecosystem.

Does it actually matter nobody is going to force you to download another App Store if you don’t want. My sister has a Samsung mobile & she has zero malware so stop telling scary story’s to people. Apple just don’t want anyone else getting a bit of there app money.

Yes, it does. Because what is immediately going to happen is that Meta is going to create their own app store, which will be the only place to download Facebook/Instagram/WhatsApp, and which will conveniently circumvent many if not all the privacy protections Apple has spent the last decade building.

And your sister has no malware that she knows of.

but a phone isnt a mac.
limited hardware tweaked to prolong battery life.

my mac has the same chip as my iPad.

you let anything on a battery powered device and it can ruin the whole experience.

for that one user. not for everyone else. memory hogging apps will be weeded out or fixed.
we had Android users at work install software on their phones and it infected the whole work network and spread to many other phones and crashed our desktop mail for days until they trapped who it was.

this could have happened with any pc or mac on your network also. did the android "infection" spread to the iPhones also? :D

nice story though.

just because a few people love to tinker or are sucked into installing something. why should we all suffer?

what I do with my phone is really none of your business so you wont suffer.

you buy an iphone knowing it is walled.
dont like that then dont buy it. simple

the iPhone was not a walled garden when it was created. that grew from apples greed later.

enjoy your newfound freedom.

Well I can’t say I was in favour of the UK leaving the EU but at least we won’t be party to this nonsense.
And the UK would have had a moderating influence in this. If you ask me… this is what mainly the French want.

That's the problem though, right? Sure they can switch to Android but then lose out on iMessage. Locking users behind that choice is exactly the kind of vendor lock in that EU wants to get rid of.

As an example, I recently switched to Android and my family is all using iMessage group chats. They don't work over SMS. All other chat apps are supported on both platforms but not iMessage. It's high time for a regulation. Having to choose your phone based on if iMessage is supported is crazy.
But you can choose another chat app on iOS. DO IT!!

With the DSA, the EU again proves that global tech companies can and should be regulated if they have the position of a gatekeeper. When I read some comments here, I again notice how necessary this is. Not just the actual changes that will benefit us, the customers and citizens, in the long run but also the symbolic act of showing that global tech companies can’t just behave as if they are above the law. In a democracy, elected representatives and the governmental institutions have the power, not private companies like Apple and others.

...Ms. Vestager, is that you?

Tech regulations created by people who are mostly good at speaking and glad-handing...

The most stricking fact of all this is how some people who follow technology news everyday really think giving options can’t have any downsides, because each one is responsible. So short-sighted. Then they still get surprised when catch-all products fail.

The DMA will, for the most part, harm American companies – big US corporations. Therefore, it will harm the US. Policy makers in Washington should wake up.

This will end up being an EU vs. US issue.

An apt response by the US would be to impose new tariffs on all European consumer goods.

So, because the rest of your family uses iMessage, Apple should have to open it up to Android??

There are plenty of messaging apps that work across all devices. How about you get them to change apps instead? That way, you can all use your device of choice and still communicate without requiring Apple do something they shouldn't have to do.

Or, better yet, use the universal messaging apps: phone calls and emails.

yeah, If I were Apple I'd literally halve the api's and services I'm willing to let third party stores use. I'd turn the 3rd party app space into a very poor experience. No multi tasking, no access to metal etc.. just a very basic namespace and completely sandboxed from the wider OS.

Then I'd let customers decided what app stores best meets their needs but warn customers every step of the way this stuff is completely unsupported. I'd also say Apple will not help you customer service wise if any app is central to your problems.

For me I'd be fighting fire with fire here. I would make this whole thing a nightmare for the EU.

Message systems would have the most basic interopability possible.
I'd just make it all a huge waste of time.

So in a nutshell you'd be blatantly anti-competitive, opening yourself up to probably multiple antitrust investigations and making yourself vulnerable to quite significant fines under the DMA/DSA? In the end your only recourse is pulling out of the EU market completely, which your board and shareholders will crucify you for because it is your third most important market representing some $89bn in sales in FY2021.

Yeah that sounds like a truly thought out proposal.

Its really interesting test case of governments fighting corporations on a global scale , the fact that a government can dictate which port an electrical device will have is really something crazy.

Can they decide that a game must support all platforms as well ? It would be nice to get GTA6 on MacOS when it comes out !!!

the EU is in trouble because non of the big tech is EU based , they are trying to make it easier for their own business to compete , which for now seems impossible as they are too far behind.
They're not "fighting corporations". That's the lie the ignorant fools keep telling themselves. The EU isn't Robin Hood, they just prefer other corporations. In this case, Epic Games and others who feel entitled to free app stores.

Great news, now all the vetting that Apple does will be gone. Corporations can decide to not upload their cr@p to App Store (as it's already happening on Android), essentially FORCING users to use alternate stores without the QA and policing that Apple does.

All hail malware! What a bunch of idiots. They don't believe their own eyes. We've seen this flood of malware happening on opened up Windows for almost 3 decades now, we've seen this happening on opened up Android for a decade now, but they just HAD to ruin it for iOS users too. THANKS A LOT, MUCH APPRECIATED.
