Is it worth just getting the souped up regular macbook pro instead? Do we have a comparison chart for the two of them?

I called again and they've changed from call tomorrow to "will be available later this week"

just wait a few days guys. it's not like these things are going to sell out like iphones or ipads on launch day.

just got back from apple retail store in san luis obispo ca

still don't have retina MBP's for sale yet :(
but ill be checking everyday until they do

Just called one of the stores in my area the lady on the phone very specifically said retina display mbp, and sounded confident when she said they will be in stock tomorrow. We shall see.

Nashua NH

They received 5 RMBPs this afternoon but all were for store display only. They were setting up one when I was there but had none for sale.

How did the screen look? Can you really tell a difference between normal screens at normal sitting distance?

Sounds like B.S to me. Just wait a couple days an they'll have more than enough to accommodate consumer demand. It's price at $2200, it's not like the iPhone where everyone is going to flock out to get one at $600 or $200 on a contract.
I'd say you're right about the demand for these things. I'm not worried that they'll sell out like the iPhones and iPads do. I mean, why only two for display?
how does this sound to you? "We are getting 2 macbook pros for display, and may get more to sell"

....they have no idea :)
They may have no idea, but I'll hold them to what they said. I'm going to the store tomorrow morning to check it out. Maybe I'll be one of the lucky few, or maybe I'll walk away with nothing... again.

I went to the 14th ST store in NYC.
They did not have them in stock, but they did have the models in the ipads on the tables.

Looks like there will be 3 models for in store.
1. Low end
2. Mid - The 2.6 with 8GB
3. Maxed out - The 2.7 Ghz, 16GB RAM, 768 GB SSD

btw the maxed out option was over $3700.

Wish the "mid" option was the base with the RAM upgrade. I feel that will be one of the most common configurations.

I think the general consensus is that nobody has any clue when these things are coming out in stores.

Apple employees from just one store have told me everything from last night to this morning to tomorrow to 3 weeks from now. I just wish they didn't say it with such overt confidence!

In fairness I've waited 6 months, I can wait another 2 weeks, no real need to have it NOW. Just would have been nice

Kudos! I've been waiting for the last 4 weeks and an extra 2 more weeks to wait. First thing I'll do when I unbox it is to lick it. Olivia Munn style! :D

From what I could tell screen was great. They were uploading software so I only was able to see a grey text screen but that alone was much better than any screen I have ever seen.

My conversation just now with an employee at my local Apple store:

Me: Do you have any of the retina display MacBook Pros?

Apple Guy: Not yet.

Me: When do you expect them?

Apple Guy: I think they said we're getting them on the 11th.

Me: Today is the 12th.

Apple Guy: Uhh.....well.....they're probably in the basement. They have lots of stuff they haven't unpacked down there.

 Does Apple even tell these guys when they release a new product?

They said they are expecting shipment tomorrow morning and will have a limited quantity for sale.

Will post pictures if they're on display..

HA! That's been the story of my life for the past 24 hours.

Btw, when you call...say its for business use. I called earlier saying for personal and they just blew me off!!!

Dont know about licking it! Might not have the same effect. I just hope it arrives before I go away on holiday, otherwise it's about 6 weeks, ughhhh.

Does anyone know if there is a chance, that apple products ever arrive drastically before the estimate, so the estimate is just something for the to fall back on, or is it more or less certain that I wot have one for at least 2 weeks? I've only ever ordered stuff that ships within 24 hours !

Why would they only send them two for display? For teasers?

I dont know about drastically getting one sooner or later but back when the new iPhones came out some of the people who ordered online right away got their phones 2-3 days early. (I think that was the 3G one) until apple started calling the carriers to hold until the release date.
