If an apple employee did preferentially give a unit out I doubt the company would be terribly pleased. Apple is constantly on the lookout for their employees doing anything against the company's message or where they may be construed to be double dipping on access to equipment.

While it probably wasn't the case here, think about the sales restrictions and attempt to limit "scalper" type sales in the past. Apple does not want/need that type of exposure.

Definitely, report it if there is enough evidence to show sales were made based on a sales consultant's wishes over the company policies.

I have had nothing but good experiences in dealing with the people in the apple stores. I just go with the understanding that they are sales people with a touch of fanboyism. They might not know everything, but they will at least try to make sure your experience is positive, within reason.

I also have never had a particularly good experience, in my local Apple store (Leicester, UK) for pretty much the same reasons as above! Don't know about the rest of the world, don't know about the rest of the world, but Apple Retail in the UK is an absolute shambles.

Customer service on the phone/online is excellent, but it would be considering its mainly based in the US and Ireland

Yeah, although to be fair I hate all of the Apple stores, rude workers are just the cherry on top. They're always way too busy and it is going to sound arrogant but people who go in an Apple store for the 'sake' of going to an Apple store to play around on an iPad/Mac when they have no intention at all of buying one and thus taking up time of the retail assistants who are bogged down with generic non-sales questions.

Or 13/14 year olds who constantly plague the shops just to take loads of pictures of themselves using the webcam and upload to their Facebook "at the apple store!!!1111!".

I think there is a fundamental difference to retail in the UK and the USA from my own observations and what I've seen first hand when I've been across the pond; retail and customer service here genuinely sucks and it wouldn't surprise me Apple recruits in the USA are 'amazing' given even their lower than average service is better than our best service. Only place where I've got amazing retail customer service is at John Lewis.

Called Century City, Beverly Center, The Grove and Santa Monica, and all said they were out. Beverly Center said they had 4, but instantly sold out of them, and won't be getting them for 4 weeks. :(

It's the same case here. A majority of their sales rep or "specialist" know very little besides the little basics of each item in the store. To get the job you don't need any previous knowledge, which is directly stated on their application. Once in awhile i run into a veteran who knows wtf he's talking about.

But usually when I have a question I always go straight to the genius bar, the guys that actually fix these things and are trained to know the ins and out of every product.

My Message to Tim Cook
Actually emailed to him.

(I figured poetry may be more effective). ::sarcasm::

Oh Apple
How I stalk thee

Please just hear
My plea

Your products are gorgeous
Your allure is so sweet

I'm so excited
I've begun to obsessively tweet

But dear sir
I've been feeling so low

I've not been able to find
The new Retina MacBook Pro

Hours I've toiled
And stores I've traversed

Your employees give answers
That sure seem rehearsed

Is it today?
Is it tomorrow?

When will I be able to
Get rid of this sorrow

Four years have I worked with
My previous MacBook

I need a new laptop
To continue my work

Just let us know when
Retinas will be in stores

You know what I'm feeling
... You already have yours :)

LOL, brought a tear to my eye.

Just bought the higher end 15 inch at Danbury Store. It was pretty fishy because I called twice and they said they had them in stock. I walk in the store and the guy tells me there are still three left. He places the order and their "runner" does not come out with one.

He then goes to the back and comes out and said that they sold out. I was like wtf you just said your inventory shows three. He sees I'm disappointed then goes inside and comes back 5 min later and says don't worry I got one for you.

Few min later the runner comes out with one.

Seems weird and they seem to be holding these or giving preference to certain people(which they are not supposed to do).

Yeah when I was there this morning at 8:45. There was a training thing going on so only the elderly who didn't know how to use the computers were in there. Then these hipsters that were NOT wearing a blue Apple Uniform, drinking their starbucks coffee, were shown around inside the store with their employee buddies. There are definitely problems with this release.

I called my local store in Tampa and they said they're expecting them...

WITHIN A MONTH.

So I ordered online and I'll be waiting 3 weeks.

Same thing being described happened to me too over the iPhone 4S. Walked into the shop and was told they didn't have any, someone else (who hadn't reserved) walked in and asked a different assistant and he had bought 2 of them.

I think assistants saying "not in stock" when it comes to new products is their little way of saying "I can't be bothered doing a stock check, so I'll tell you a lie and claim they're sold out, I don't need to sell to you because it's a new product and it will sell out one or another by the end of the day..".

If you specify the time and location, they could probably narrow it down themselves.

I've heard of people emailing tcook@apple.com :p

Thanks, just emailed him. As I was writing I remembered the employee at one point told me there were more in the back but he'd make sure I didn't get one. It was because I was calling him out on the preferential treatment. It really looked like they had got the shipment in then called this guy to come down and purchase 2 because they knew him. Very buddy buddy scene when he was buying.

Yeah, although i feel welcome in most stores in the US, not just Apple. The same cant be said about here! Funnily enough I work for John Lewis so that's good to hear ;)

Were you offered 86% discount on the warranty?! Because they told me today in Leicester, after telling me they had the retina model, they were just unloading them that the discount on AppleCare has changed for HE and it is now just 30%, they also told me this had changed on the online store too. Turned out the latter was a blatant lie. But I will be even more annoyed if it was total BS!

Anyway, after keeping me hanging around for 20 minutes, they told me they were the new MacBook Airs, not retina pros. So not a good experience. Had a moan as a US representative when ordering from the online store and she has logged the 'incident' and said it was 'completely unacceptable' for them to give out false information! See where it goes.

Yeah, I would complain about what happened to me and my friend today. Trying to dupe customers into believing they're buying a 'new' version of the MacBooks at the same prices so they can clear their dead stock is simply out of order. It's just not worth it unless you're speaking to them for something relevant (ie. buying a mac like you).

And no, I was told it was 86% on the Mac lol. It was more because the person serving me evidently can't grasp simple numeracy as I assume he meant 14% considering this is the actual student discount and his 86% figure is missing a certain 14%. He didn't even answer my question about getting the free 3 year warranty in-store. He evidently didn't want to help me so I walked out the shop as nobody else was free and called up later when I got home and got my question answered.

Always best buying online if you're a student as it is only the online education store giving the 3 year warranty for free.

Although annoying, my complaint isn't about the little/no knowledge of apple hardware and software, it's the customer service which apple retail is supposed to pride itself on.

The fact I was lied to (twice, and it's not the first time) in an attempt to persuade me to buy the l machine in the store and not online is something I'm struggling to get my head round, especially as they claim they don't work for commission? What is the point?

That's what I ended up doing in the end! 2-3 week wait is going to be tough though

What is this about free 3-year warranty?

Called my local Apple Store to see if they had any RMBP in stock and they said no. They did say that they had some on display. I've been wanting to see what that display looks like, so I drove over there. Were there any RMBP's on display? Of course not....why would there be...

Thanks, just emailed him (Tim Cook)

I seriously can't believe we're batting around Tim Cook - the CEO of a major multi-billion dollar company, with thousands of employees - as if he sits there and has time to read emails from users looking for a Mac from a local store. Do people think these things through?

"forget customer services....I'll email Tim Cook!".
