Called my local store @ 9:45am today, asking if they were in. Sales Rep said they were in! I specifically asked for the maxed out model - 768gb ssd, 16gb ram. He confirmed that they had it. Awesome!

Drove to the apple store - was there at 10:01. Asked to buy the Retina pro. I was told that they did not have them. I specified that xxxxx (he gave me his name) told me on the phone that the store had them. She went in the back - definitely not in stock.

Waste of a trip. Mad.

Dude, why the **** do they do **** like that? It's infuriating. I did the same thing when the new iPad came out. Was looking for 64GB Verizon Black. Called several stores, they all had them over the phone, but as soon as I got there it was sold out.

I think I've read conflicting reports here, but according to the Apple Store rep to whom I spoke, they say they cannot upgrade the RAM in store from 8 GB to 16 GB. The rep said it was soldered in.

Not meant to be the final word, necessarily, but just another bit of information.

Ram is soldered to the motherboard, order what you want now because you cant upgrade it.

They weren't even sold out - they never had them in the first place:mad:

Does anyone know (or can assume from previous experience) whether or not we would be able to go to a store to pick up a base model MBPR with 16GB of RAM? Once the demand settles down, we should be able to have items shipped to the store, correct?

I do not no this 100% for sure but I don't think so. Someone posted a picture on here of the in store iPad display and it showed the base model with no upgrades, and 2.6 with upgraded 16 GB RAM and the 512 GB SSD for about $2799, and a fully maxed model that was up near $$3799.

I want the base with 16 GB also. :(

Boylston Street, Boston and Cambridgeside, both have on Display, but none for Sale. It really is BEAUTIFUL. :apple:

Why put it on display when you don't have it for sale. I would assume they would just save themselves the hassle of so many people asking them whether they have them for sale. Seems like a lot of stores got display units but no stock for sale.

So frustrating.....Same store that said they would have them in Tuesday now says they have no idea.

Called Best Buy and lady said they should have them in Friday.

Most frustrating computer launch that has wasted more of my time then any I remember. If by Sunday no stores have them I think i will just get a new macbook air for now. Need a laptop for work and getting so tired of these games.

I went to the Bethesda, MD store this morning when it opened at 10am and they had 6 on display, but said they had none to sell. I was looking at the ones on display with this sales guy next to me and after chatting for a little while he said they actually have 1 in stock. It was the 512 gb model, even though i was first trying to buy the base model. I decided to just buy that one. It is really a beautiful computer. It is transferring data from my old mbp right now. I really am lucky I have an apple store 10 minutes away from me.

How much RAM? I'm looking for a 512/16GB system. Which Bethesda store was this?

I went to the apple store in Memphis... They got 6 in.. 5 were displays. I was number 2 in line...

After a more thorough investigation, BB has a surplus of the new non-retina Macbook Pros. Shipments of RETINA MBs will be arriving within this week.

Yeah, I'll PM you if I find any. I'm gonna call all 5 stores a few rounds today incase they just shipments in the afternoon or something. One of them HAS to get at least a few.

Called Southdale, Ridgedale, Uptown, and Mall of America, and no-one had any for sale. Uptown was the most helpful and told me they hadn't yet received their shipment for the morning and to call back around 1.

Now going to try the local Best Buy's. Any luck on your end?

This is just a regular retail practice. Ever gone into a store and wanted a shirt you saw on a mannequin only to find out that's the only one they have, and no they won't sell it you? Basically a store like Apple, wants all of their stores to have a certain look, and with the exception of the larger standalone stores and the flagship stores, they want that look to be uniform. So they have them set up the displays. I doubt that the display units come from the same stock anyway. These were probably units that they couldn't sell in the first place, maybe they were test units or used in some way. Probably don't have packaging etc.
Either way I don't fault apple for this. I don't even fault them for the inventory issues, obviously they wanted to keep this product under wraps until it was announced at WWDC and didn't want some kid working at a retail store tweeting pictures of the shipment they received a few days before the big reveal. What does bother me is that they decided to start selling them too soon. They should have just set the launch date for the following week, and handled it like they would an iPad or iPhone launch. That way they would have been able to better stock their stores(obviously shortages could still be a problem) and people would all have a fair advantage to get one.

Also I have a feeling that the initial 5-7 day estimated ship time was a pretty good indicator as to when they will be readily available in stores. So I'm guessing by Friday of this week at the earliest or Money/Tuesday of next week, they should be a little more plentiful. Although I still do think shortages will be an ongoing issue for at least a few weeks, not that I think the demand is super high, but I think it is higher that the current supply.

Wow, did the guy, xxxxx, even say anything, or was he too embarrassed to apologize.

Same thing happened this morning. I called 2 days ago, said they would have it when they opened yesterday. I went there and they said they didn't have any. I called this morning, and I explained that I don't want to drive an hour AGAIN (and through tolls and traffic) and to check to make sure. They said they'll have one for me when the door opens. I was so heated when they told me they didn't.

To make matters worse, I asked to speak to the manager so I can tell her/him to inform his employees that they shouldn't mislead people. Some girl (in blue) comes over and says she's the manager. I ask her to give me the number for a regional because she gives me this stiff attitude (something like, "Well, there's nothing we can do about it."). Flustered, she goes and speaks to another worker (in black; clearly seems to be the REAL manager of the store), comes back and gives me the 800 number for APPLECARE. I was just stumped and I didn't even know what to say. The REAL manager didn't even bother coming over and speaking to me. The most ridiculous thing to happen to me at a retail store... Ever. Wasted 4+ total hours of driving, gas, and tolls. Not to mention I'm literally on a limp because of a minor leg injury (just pisses me off even more lol).

Wow, it couldn't get much worse than that.
