Don't know exactly how they stock. I imagine if units come in during the day and someone wants one, they will sell them. Thus it's pretty much impossible to get one so far. It's a right place, right time, talk to the right employee kind of thing. I'm going in the morning because I think it's the best chance to catch a unit after a new shipment, seeing as you have from when the store closes to when it opens in the morning for the next shipment to come in, and nobody can buy one in the meantime. I'm certainly not going to go to a store and wait around all day.

I would just go to the MOA and sit there all day but if they didn't get some and another store did, I probably wouldn't get there in time. It's a damn shame that people who walk in at the right time can just get one while us two have been calling all 5 multiple times a day and we can't get *****.

An Apple Store employee told me over the phone that as soon as stock is received it goes on sale. This means that since most stores receive shipments in the middle of the day your only chance of getting one is calling or walking in at just the right moment. I guess you could try the business client reservation approach, I don't know how much they question you about your credentials, though.

Best Buy is my safety net right now. They've matched the education pricing for me and they will contact me when stock comes in and hold if for at least a day (sounds like up to three days). Also, you can reserve a 2.3 GHz or a 2.6 GHz model.

When they asked what company I worked for and what I do I just said self employed/internet marketing. Seems easy to get on their call list, but unfortunately I have not received any calls yet.

Still nothing at the Ottawa store :(

I'm starting to think that none of the canadian stores have gotten any

Same here. Asked me which company I worked for and what services I might be interested in, etc. No calls yet, though.

So, with the stock issues, performance and software issues, lack of user upgrade-ability, lack of Kensington lock slot (I would be taking this to college), I'm sort of on the fence as to whether I actually want one of these or not. The new 15" high-config non-Retina MBP looks pretty damn attractive at the same price as the base RMBP. I could buy the Retina and hope that Apple comes out with fixes for the performance issues and the software support gets better as time goes on, or I could drop the same amount of money on a non-Retina MBP and get better specs, better performance, and a machine that is still pretty damn thin and light. I don't know...

I'll probably wait outside a store tomorrow morning, but if days pass and there continues to be a lack of stock, I might just cave and get a non-Retina MacBook Pro.

Seems a little strange to me that you would wait outside of a store tomorrow to hope to get a computer that you don't think is that great, or that your not sure that you really want.
Did you adjust the resolution when using the "non-retina" apps? As they said, but default it will pixel double all apps, so that they use the full resolution, however, adjusting this resolution would improve the pixel problem somewhat. Honestly I played around on one a bit and I have no idea how you got the computer to look as bad as it did in that picture. This isn't saying they look good, far from it. I'll be the first to admit they can look pretty bad, but as bad as that picture? I didn't see it.

Also you have to give third party apps time to update, I would bet that "Retina" ready apps start to surface within a few days.

WOW. IT JUST HAPPENED AGAIN.

If you haven't read my story, it's on page 25, but to put it short... I called, said they had it. Went, they didn't. Twice at the Apple store in 2 days.

Now, I called a Best Buy, they said they had it. I made sure that the lady repeated "Retina" over and over. I drove an hour there, AGAIN (literally right next to the Garden State Plaza mall with the same Apple store in it), and they told me they never had any. Are you serious?! I HATE PARAMUS.

I'm seeing reports that the performance issues are fixed with the latest update, and yes, non-retina apps will be updated, so I'm a little more optimistic now.

I'm worried that once the initial stock of these dries up, the stores will be stuck waiting the 3-4 weeks+ for new units that online orders are now waiting.

I would rather snag one when I can, then I can take it home and decide whether the issues I already presented are enough to make me want something else. If so, I can always return it...

Pretty sure I would start screaming in the store at that point. Email Tim Cook. Oops, didn't read that this was a Best Buy this time.

I just said, "Are you [effing] kidding me...," in the saddest way ever and walked out really slowly.

Because of your stories, I think if I call any store and they tell me they have one, I will ask that they repeat back to me the exact model number, SKU (if it's a Best Buy), and some basic specs (Hard drive size/processer speed/etc.). I will also take the name of the employee who answered the call. In the case of Best Buy you really should have asked them to put it on hold for you.

What time did you go to Best Buy? I was just about to call them.

If you do, make sure that you ask them to say it to you without you saying it first. I made the mistake of saying, "MacBook Pro with RETINA DISPLAY. The one with 8GB of RAM and 256GB hard drive, right?!" I'm pretty sure she wasn't listening... She just told me, "Yeah, that one." I asked to reserve it or even pay for it over the phone, but she told me that they had plenty and not to worry. It's a good thing... WAIT. WAIT. I was just about to say that it was good I didn't pay for it, but I remember her telling me, "You're talking about the one that's $2200, right?"

Are the other models of it $2200?

EDIT: Damn it. The high-end non-Retina is $2200. But either way, she didn't listening to me when I told her the specs.

Well at least I got to play with one. Decided to take a look at one at Tyson's Corner in VA. I really can use that screen res for school stuff. I was half tempted to just get a maxed out 13" air but I decided to just hunker down and wait for the stores to get stock since I'll be waiting a month for one if I order online.

hah apple sales people aren't hired based on their technical knowledge. i'm not surprised that they don't know what they are talking about...

I just remembered that I know someone whose bf works at a Minnesota Apple store... Trying to get ahold of her so she can see if he can hold one for me if they get any.

I haven't had any luck in Tampa, Brandon, Orlando or Altamonte Spings. Let me know your luck.

Same here. International Plaza had 2 at 10am and sold them right when they opened. Went back at 530 and they didn't have any others for sale today, according to the less than helpful employee I spoke to.

----------

I will. I still can't believe that it could be this hard to buy a $2000 + computer. I mean really????

Tell me about it!

Tell me about it!

I called international plaza this morning at 9 and they told me they had none. -_-
