Finally got a base model

After calling best buy & apple all week, I finally snagged one in AZ. Got the base model at the San Tan Best Buy. I called at 10:15 local time and was told they had multiple in stock, no need for them to 'hold' for me. When I got there, the person was mis-informed, despite asking specifically for Retina. They only had one in stock.

Luckily I got there just in time. As I was checking out, another employee was trying to find it on the shelf to send to another store.

I told them I knew Best Buy was matching the Student Discount, could they do anything for the Company discounts Apple does. To my surprise & delight, they gave me a $150 gift card, which was pretty close to my company discount through Apple.

i am very happy and very upset. i finally tracked a RMBP at the west palm beach, fl best buy and drove 45 minutes to pick it up after they held it for. when i get there, they were privy to some people getting both the discount and the gift card. just when they were about to do it, the store manager comes over and says they will ONLY do the $150 gift card after spending 5 minutes confirming i was a college student. i was pissed so i left then went to my local best buy in boca raton to see if they would give me the 200 student discount and got the same answer from the apple rep and the cust service people that they are only doing the gift card. i brought the picture of the receipt that was posted on here earlier showing both the discount and the gift card. they said to go to that store and do it. THAT STORE WAS IN ARIZONA AND I AM IN FLORIDA. watever, i have a RMPB, so **** off best buy, ill make up that $200 at some point in my life

Here's what happened. I called Brandon apple this morning at 9:00 to see if they had them. I was on hold for a while so I just started driving that way. When They finally answered after 30 minutes they said no. So did tampa. So on my way home I stopped by best buy. They had one on display but didn't yesterday. I asked they guy if he had any and looked up the sku, he said no. So I went out to my car and called them and asked them to look up the sku. She said they had one and went to go get a visual on it. She reserved it for me, I went in and picked it up after I went home and got a gift card I had. :D

Good job! It's like we are all having to learn to be shady and play the system.

Well I went back today and tried to be calm about the situation, but they didn't seem to care. I was in shock, you guys obviously played around with it for a while and tried to pawn it off on me like it was new.

I gave up on my hunt and will now just patiently wait for my online Apple order. Good luck to everyone else in finding one.

Ha! Sorry. I think your experience comports with why I stopped shopping at Best Buy. Compared to the evils of BB, I'll take Apple's preferential treatment of Business customers (and lying about it). Apple could and should do better, but at least when I buy something, I'm confident it's good.

The apple store at Northlake mall in Charlotte NC received 6 base models in this morning and had 4 left at 230pm today if anyone in the Charlotte area is looking for one. Only the cheapest model.

Some best buy stores are showing availability in my area but the ones close by don't actually have any. Oh well.

Hoping one of the Apple Stores get them soon so I can easily use my corporate discount there...

Just walked into the Best Buy in Folsom, California and asked them if they had any. First the guy had no clue what I was talking about but then I gave them the Best Buy SKU number and they looked it up and said they had five in stock.

I wanted the base model with 8GB of RAM and after looking in their back room for about 10 minutes they came out with one. I asked for the education discount and the $150 BB Gift Card. They said the education discount is only $100 off and I can't have both. I had printed out a copy of one of the other member's receipts on here and handed it to them. They made a phone call to someone (they said it was their Apple rep) and then called another person (in-store I believe) and finally agreed to doing both discounts ($200 off for education and $150 off for BB Gift Card).

After that they tried to sell me anything that was basically in their field of view as an addon.

Him: "Do you want Microsoft Office? Its on sale!"
Me: "No thanks"

Him: "Ok, do you want to purchase this Surfing Protection Plan that keeps you safe from viruses when you're on Google?"
Me: "WAT. No thanks."

Him: "But it will keep you safe from bad programs and bad websites when you're on Google because otherwise we have people coming in here everyday who mess up their computers when they get online."
Me: "No thank you, I don't want it."

Him: "Ok thats fine. I want to talk to you about our hardware protection plan. You know batteries? They cost $100 up front just to replace and if anything else goes bad, Apple won't cover the battery and other things and you know these power cords, they go bad a lot and Apple won't do anything about it so do you want to get that?"
Me: "No thanks, I'm fine without it."

Him: "Ok but do you want to get the accidental protection plan, its not too expensive and if you have an expensive computer, this can help protect it--"
Me: "No man, I don't want anything besides the computer and the gift card."
Him: "Oh...ok <BUTTHURT>."

So yeah, got the RMBP and didn't have to deal with the clueless hipsters at the local Apple store, just had to survive the used car salesman speel at the local Best Buy. If anyone else is in the area, hit up the Folsom store. Looks like inventory numbers are starting to climb up today.

I just called BB in Chino Hill -- wow what an awesome staff they have. Unfortunately they don't have any, but they were very helpful and at least understood what was going on.

From what I understand the shipments are from apple and there is no absolute time or date (i.e., they're trickling in).

I registered a business account at West Edmonton Mall and just got their only one. First one for sale in Edmonton as far as I know. They and Southgate both have display models though, and all the Bestbuys and Futureshops in town have one coming in on Sunday most likely.

Westworld will have the top of the line, 2.3, and 2.6 on monday. However no 2.6 with 16gb of ram:( I don't think the apple stores here will carry it either so I guess I have to stick it out.

Lucky u all... My local best buy refuses to do 200 dollars hardware discount. They will only do gift card. They suck.

Called Roseville, MN and Mall of America Apple stores a little bit ago, no retinas and no say when they'll be in.

As others have said, it is very strange that one of the largest retail centers in the United States would not have a product in stock.

I guarantee when you made this post you had no intention of it becoming like one of the biggest forum posts on Macrumors...lol

This is definitely for sure. I've never started a thread that turned into one this big before! Maybe I should advertise my Ultimate Mid 2011 11" MacBook Air I have for sale in it!

LOL

The bad part is if you call MacMall they will tell you how many they have on backorder, when they expect their next shipment and how many they'll get. If you ask the people at the Apple Store they seem to have no idea until the truck shows up.

Yes, that is what it seemed like when I called. They seemed clueless about when they might get more.

They excused it by saying "there is very high demand." I'm not sure that's a plausible excuse for extreme uncertainty.

Quite a shame, unfortunately, because my job requires I purchase a laptop for work by the end of the day today to begin work on a new project tomorrow.

Buy something that costs the same and hopefully you can exchange it shortly.

Does Apple or Best Buy stock any RMBP's with more than the base options? I'm impatient and don't want to wait 3-4 weeks for a 16GB one to ship.

They should be stocking a 2.7GHz, 16GB, 786GB model eventually but for now they don't even have the base model in stock. MacMall said earlier they were expecting 400 to arrive by the 25th so I expect the retail stores will be getting in a truck load each before then.

DUDE! I just got the last base model Retina version there about 30 minutes ago! I talked with a very nice lady named "Bobby" who was awesome! She held one for me that some lady apparently didn't end up buying. At first I was told over the phone that they could only give me the $150 gift card but then I got a call back from her saying that they had just come in this morning so everyone was a little confused but that they would honor the student discount on top of it! So I got a MacBook pro Retina held for me, plus $200 student discount, and $150 BB gift card made me very happy :) People in the Sacramento, CA need to call the Folsom Best Buy cause they provided me with the best service I've ever had in my life :)

I called Folsom just after 10 and they didn't have of the 512GB models in stock, but I guess they had the 256GB model.

I'm surprisingly having difficulty finding the 512's as well. :( Been in front of two 256's though.
