It takes many seconds for the text to catch up with my typing.
Turn off the rich text editor. It's on if you can see a text formatting bar in the reply box.

The RTF editor is javacript that is executing all the time. That's why the slowdown on this site.

That's not likely too little RAM, it's because you are using the rich text editor - you can turn it off under your username/preferences at the top right.
Yeah, you're probably right. I did check though and the RAM was maxed. Can't believe I didn't think of that, lol. I guess I just assumed because when the CPU wasn't under any other load it was fine. It's much better now with the plaintext editor.

Second day of the challenge, still trying to get Fedora 25 Server to boot into a GUI on my G5.

I've installed Mate, Cinnamon, even Gnome but no luck , I only get a mouse cursor.

LXDE seems to work but the colors are awfull and the text is hard to read.

I've swapped my Radeon video card to an Nvidia one but same result.

I'm removing all DE's except LXDE and am going to fiddle around with kernel boot options now

I honestly haven't touched Fedora in years so I don't know if I could be of any assistance here. I found some very helpful information on G5/Linux/Video at Power PC Liberation that might be able to help you as well.

Good luck!

In case anyone is trying to get voice communications through Discord working, download user agent switcher and set the user agent to one like this:
Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; Win64; x64) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/58.0.3029.110 Safari/537.36
This will tell discord that you're on Windows 10 and using Chrome.

Next, go to about:config and set media.peerconnection.enabled to true otherwise it still won't work. For some reason this seems to be set to false by default by TFF.

Day 2 is halfway done! I spent the first day (while I wasn't working) using my PowerBook G4 15" 1.67 GHz for some web browsing, and my iPod touch 1st gen for a little mobile Twitter for a bit (it's surprisingly fast on such an old device!). Admittedly, I've been using my new iPod touch and iPhone for some texting and some Pokémon GO, I simply can't get away without doing that! :p I also took some video footage on my camcorder and tried to import it to my Power Mac G4 but I was having some weird importing troubles with videos not playing back in full screen, so I'll have to look into that more still.

The second day my mom found her old 12" iBook G3 which she used between 2010 and 2012 before she got her iPad, so she let me have a go at trying it out (sounds like I can claim ownership... we'll see!) so that was fun to try, and the battery still works pretty good!

I'm typing this right now on my 500 MHz Power Mac G4, one of my good old trusty desktop Macs. :)

Unfortunately it looks like my Titanium PowerBook SSD won't arrive this week, it seems to be on backorder or something, but when it does, I'll definitely use that a bunch, even if it's after this week!

July 2nd, overall the second, but my first actual day of the challenge, as mentioned before. Let's see, what can I say...

So far, things are going well. I've mostly been browsing the net and watching some YouTube, the latter via SMtube and VLC v2.0.10 in 480p, tho most YT videos seem to play their 360p versions instead of 480p. 720p doesn't want to work without dropping a third of the frames, even using CorePlayer with the AVC deblocking filter disabled, making it pretty hard to watch. That said, local H.264 720p video files work better, but instead of dropping frames like crazy, I get some visual artifacts instead. Neither is really great, so I'll be sticking with 480p and below, which works perfectly fine in VLC.

Web browsing hasn't been much of a problem at all using Leopard-Webkit, although the desktop versions of some sites like Twitter and eBay are a bit sluggish - eBay is alright once the page has fully loaded, but since I'll be keeping Twitter open in a tab in the background most of the time, I'll be using their mobile site for that.

Leaving usage of modern websites and video aside, I'm still not quite used to Mac OS X. I'm a Windows 7 user normally, and have been a DOS and Windows user since the late 90s, with some excursions into Mac OS 8/9 and Linux, after growing up with Commodore 64 and especially the Amiga. Some idiosyncracies of OS X and its software will take some time getting used to, ex. how, in this very post reply textbox, pressing the End key on the keyboard will scroll the page all the way to the bottom, instead of putting the cursor at the end of the line. Not sure if that's an LWK thing or OS X in general.

Well, that's most likely going to be it for tonight, it's 10:40 pm over here by now, so I'll be off for the night soon.

Sooo looks like Discord won't work on TenFourFox after all. It'll just say RTC Connecting forever and you can't hear or be heard. Might have to use my phone for this one..

Day 1 I was in Louisiana on vacation. I barely had time to sit down considering I was packing the entire time.

Tonight, I’ll get home and fire up the PowerBook. I heard there was a massive storm and I want to make sure it survived.

I found a powermac G5 on Craigslist for $40. I’d love to put an SSD in it and make a new desktop. I may or may not be contacting the guy about it.

I've installed the first CoD as well as Civ 4. I'm thinking of installing Doom, Duke, etc. Any other suggestions? I'm on a G5.

So hows that exactly? Just version 4.0 or any variant of iTunes 4 can be made to work?
Only 4.0.

There is third party software that will make this possible, and you can fake it by redirecting your iTunes library on a client Mac to the library on a server Mac (creating a shortcut to that server Mac's library). Doing that requires you to connect via AFP.

Of course any version of iTunes can share over a home network, but only 4.0 can share over the net natively.

Apple eliminated the option with version 4.0.1, released quite quickly after 4.0 and Apple has never put the option back.

The downside of using 4.0 of course is that you don't get any of the features of later versions and it's interface is much simpler.

In my case however, the only reason to stay up to date in iTunes was for Google Play Music's ability to upload my library. Once that stopped working I went back to 4.0 because all I use iTunes for is music.

So I've run into a little hardware-related snag here. The Mac I selected for this challenge, the Power Mac G5 Quad I built a year ago, is no longer capable of keeping itself cool. LCS pump is barely audible (if at all), so there is definitely a problem here that will take time to troubleshoot. Finally beginning to understand what makes these liquid-cooled G5s such a pain...

Next in line is my Power Mac G5 dual-core 2.3 GHz. But, since we're already on day two and I have yet to start, and as someone who is already pretty much aware what can and can't be done on PowerPC Macs running Mac OS X Tiger or Leopard, or what can be done but slower or with more compromises (such as web browsing), not sure if it's really worth going through with this challenge.

What I could try, since I've never done this before, is to install a Linux distribution on the dual-core 2.3 GHz, and use that for a few days. There are also quite a few games for PPC Macs, most of which I have yet to try.

While I couldn't commit myself to the challenge, I have still stayed away from using the Windows computer and spent 4 hours on my PowerBook G4.

Browsing has been just fine for the most part. Only issue I had was MEGA as it complained about flash not being installed (I have installed 10.1 but that's ancient) when it came to decrypting what I had downloaded but I still got the files I wanted via another website. I have stuck to using the mobile versions of Twitter and Facebook (touch.facebook.com) in order to keep my sanity. I watched some anime @ 480p (it's a 2008 anime IIRC) with CorePlayer which worked flawlessly and watched some YouTube on LWK.

Something that I'm pretty surprised about is how well Skype works on LWK, with iTunes playing music and writing in a message, CPU usage is only about 40%.

All in all, I could see myself using my iPad Air and my PowerBook G4 as my main devices. I know the iPad Air isn't within the scope of this challenge but I have nothing worthy to replace it as my Nexus 7 is a tad mad and well 7 inches isn't enough..

The only 'gripe' I have is that it's a tad hard to chat with somebody on Facebook while doing much else but then again, maybe taking a break from chatting online isn't a bad idea!

I also did a small investigation and found out that iTunes has the lowest CPU usage when playing music when compared to VLC, Vox and SimpleAudio.

Load it up! That machine is perfectly capable, you should be able to get it running pretty good. I haven't bumped in to any significant issues so far and I have been working away on mine all day.

I'm trying to get qemu to install through MacPorts, I read if you use 2.3.4 of MacPorts it'll install 2.2.0 which should work fine with Leopard. Past that, it won't. For whatever reason, it's trying to install 2.9.0 which won't compile properly even on Leopard. I haven't really used port before so if anyone has any tips on how I can get this working properly that'd be nice.

@Lastic is the qemu expert here. Let's wait for him.

Well it looks like you already found the correct MacPorts version Leopard which is 2.3.4.

The thing is when you install an older version of Macports and let it update it will fetch the newer versions of ports.

What is your output of these commands ?

snelboek:~ uz3r$ sudo port version
Password:
Warning: port definitions are more than two weeks old, consider updating them by running 'port selfupdate'.
Version: 2.3.4

snelboek:~ uz3r$ sudo port installed | grep qemu

[doublepost=1499074908][/doublepost]Day 3 , a day off from work so today I'm going to wipe the installed Fedora 25 on the G5 and use the image from the Hyperion Forums to install and see if that gets me a workable Desktop Environment out of the box or fiddle around with boot options .

I'm also going to mimick my VIM setup from my Lenovo Thinkpad X220 Fedora 25 install on the PB G4 and then start checking into Python.
Probably will need to learn how to SSH/Telnet via Python to network devices so QEMU is there to fire up the Debian VM which has my virtual Cisco devices .

Has been a while since I checked wether Udemy videos now are playable, I'm almost sure that they worked in Roccat.

And yes I will cheat 15 minutes today since I have to do online banking for which I will use my MBp .

It's quite a surprise how good iTunes was back in the days(compared to modern versions) iTunes 10.6.3 is using 3.9 - 5.7% of CPU time (1.25ghz) and 56mb of RAM - if can't compare it to older versions but anyone who can: How is for example iTunes 4.x?

I wanted to do this in a wordpress blog but after watching the Lunduke Hour some weeks ago I decided to not use wordpress. Again I'm asking if there is a free and useful alternative.

How am I going to use PPCs?
Here's my setup: At breakfast I use the iBook G4 1.33 for reading the news and listen to the ‘Lunduke Hour’ podcast (I share his love for Linux and his hatred for Ubuntu/Canonical but unlike him I’m still in love with Macs).

In the University I use my PowerBook G4 1.67 Al for writing, Photoshop CS3, Programming in Eclipse Kepler, Spotify and study related web browsing.

At home I use my ‘trio of awesomeness’ - a Mac Mini G4 1.5 for accounting, movies, web browsing and ‘homework’. Right beside the Mini is my eMac, currently primary used for Spotify/iTunes and watching movies while working on the Mini. The last member of the trio is my newly acquired PoerBook 1400c/166 (sadly no G3 upgrade and no optical drive) which I use to write emails or the articles for this blog because of it’s great desktop like keyboard.

This is btw my daily setup! I further do have a powerful windows 10 tower standing underneath my desk which I use only for modern tasks like Netflix, Games, 20+ tabs chrome browsing if needed for my studies, a virtual machine with Linux for some tasks and one online game. As none of these tasks is mandatory for my daily life I convinced I can get through the week without any real problems. Of course I will miss the occasional Call of Duty 4 games and Netflix as well as the online game (Forge of Empires). But I have quite the experience of living without these things as I regularly go on one week hiking trips without any technical device at all (with the exception of an emergency phone of course).

That all being said I’m happy to be a member of such a great community and I hope we all will have much fun during ‘the week’.

Day2
I skip the first day because I had no time for using a computer.

Day 2 now... wow! I’m very impressed how capable these old machines are! Yesterday I worked on the PB and eMac and did massive multitasking on both. The PB reached 133°F (56°C) with fan settings as in the picture below whereas the eMacs HDD (only temp sensor) settled at 123°F (51°C). I have a feeling that’s way too much but at the moment there’s not much I can do or want to do about it. The fan speed is controllable through a Zalman Fan Mate 2 and my default should be approx 6-7v – I can hear the fan but it’s not disturbing.

I didn’t use T4F on the eMac since october last year. I updated to FP1, applied all tweaks, installed bluhellFW and uMatrix, customized the latter a bit and violà – it’s a quite good browsing experience. I don’t know why but after customizing uMatrix I don’t have any lags (maybe a few milliseconds) typing on MRF with rich text editor enabled!

Today I improved the sound of my eMac a lot, but the setup a bit tricky and I hope someone might help me to improve it. Music is played on the PB which is connected to my old Logitech 2.1 soundsystem. But instead of having speakers plugged in I connected the audio out with the eMacs microphone port which is routed to the internal speakers via Audio-MIDI-Setup. Yeah, why so complicated? The soundsystems speakers are dead :D Is there any advanced audio routing software allowing me eMac headphone plug -> soundsystem -> eMac microphone -> eMac speakers? That would help a lot make it more useful.

So far I’m content with using only PPCs, but with the exception of the eBay and Amazon website – very slow in LWK and not usable because of the scripts in T4F.

EDIT: Forgot to mention that the PB is hoocked to a 23" 1920x1080 monitor in clamshell mode

I am also a fan of Bryan Lunduke, I actually just wrote a post about one of his recent videos. I am using Pico for my blog which has been working out really well so far and worth a look.

i watch 480p youtube at a buttery smooth 30 fps thanks to QuickTime Enabler

I too have a 1.33 iBook running Tiger, for me the TFF + QE experience is this: running tweaked prefs file, Bluehell and NoScript, TFF is at 100% CPU and the QE options aren't even available - not running tweaked prefs file, Bluehell and NoScript, TFF at 100% and mostly beachballing, QE available but always says movie can't be played....

EDIT: Seems my iBook TFF prefs file had been corrupted - copying the one from my 1.33 Powerbook has fixed things.

To conclude day 3 :

Fedora 25 Server on the G5 with a Radeon videocard and Mate DM, I think I'm going to wipe it all again and start again with Fedora 24 unless I find an answer on how to fix 2D acceleration and the graphics glitching, my r300 driver is loaded , OpenGL has the latest Mesa and Gallium but video is awfull , Youtube won't even start playing back in FF 54 .

But the PB G4 12" doesn't budge on Leopard, here's Udemy videos which I do have to let buffer even on Better Performance , probably works a lot smoother on Ethernet than WiFi but hey Roccat FTW it plays them

Picture 5.png

And this 12" even has more battery life than my Lenovo Thinkpad X220 with it's standard battery pack.

So here is my update for the past 2 days:

July 1st:

I shut down all my modern stuff, except for my G4 Cube, PowerMac G5, and iMac G4. I retrieved my DLSD from my closet and began to charge it up. I then swapped the monitor outputs on the G5 to my main one instead of a side one. I wanted to run dual displays, but to my disappointment, I discovered that the ATI Radeon X800XT only has one DVI and one ADC, which i dont have any displays or adapters for. So one monitor it is... Anyway, as part of my usual late night rituals, i like to watch some YouTube videos before going to sleep. So I grabbed my DLSD and went on YouTube. I was watching some 480p videos using TFF, but the performance was kinda meh. I used my usual technique to let the videos buffer first, and then watch them. That did help a bit, but it was stuttering slightly. No big deal. Later on in the day I decided to play with my Clamshells a bit. I tossed a fresh install of 10.2 Jaguar on my Indigo 366MHz FW model, and I tried to install 10.3 Panther on my Tangerine 300MHz non-FW, which failed to install. I believe the disk was scratched or something, but I'm not too sure and I didn't get a chance to keep trying.

July 2nd:

Didn't use my computers too much today, but I did do some stuff. First off, I decided to upgrade my audio setup a bit. I added two more sets of PC speakers to give a near surround sound experience. I need one more set of speakers and some more long 3.5mm cables and then it should be perfect. It may not be my previous home theater setup that died sadly due to the Sony A/V Receiver having what I presume to be faulty solder joints, but its still better than only having 2 speakers. Besides testing some songs in Spotify using it, I also watched this week's episode of Dragon Ball Super on http://www.watchcartoononline.io/. I was unable to in TFF using both the HTML5 player and whatever the standard player is, presumably Flash. So off to Safari I went and loaded the video through there with no issues. It played in 480p with no issues whatsoever. Later that night I decided to try PPC Media Center. It was a bit more difficult to setup than I was anticipating because the installer for 6.0 didn't work right. So i found 5.0, installed everything properly, then replace 5.0's app with 6.0's, which worked in the end. I decided to try out watching an HD YouTube video, and sure enough it worked well.

ETC:

I've been cheating a bit, since I've been using my iPhone 6 as normal, but I have been trying to use the 3GS as much as I can, which is a bit difficult at times. YouTube works well on the 3GS using the official app from the App Store, as does using Google Maps, both the pre-installed version and the App Store one. Web browsing and using Slack is a bit slow and painful at times, so I end up using my 6 or a computer instead since its much faster on there. I have yet to use an Intel PC other than to setup a game of BeamNG.Drive for my cousin last night on a C2D-based HP Compaq 6000 SFF PC with a GTX 750 SFF installed, which surprisingly ran well.
