I was rocking on a PowerMac G5 Late 2005 from April to June (Dual 2,3GHz, 12Gb of RAM, GeForce 6600 256Mb and GeForce 6600LE 128Mb driving 4 display at the same time ! (2x1280x1024, 1x1680x1050 & 1 1600x1200) and from June to November (Dual 1,8GHz, 4Gb RAM, Radeon 9600XT) but alongside with my MacBook Pro Mid 2009
So I think I already done this challenge.
And I was using my G5 for video editing on Final Cut Pro 7, very VERY VEEEERRRYYYY little music production on Audacity, classic internet browsing, Office work and little big of gaming
But most of growing was made on my MacBook Pro.
I would like to do this, but I will get my Mac Mini at christmas, so I would play with it A LOT.
I still have a PowerMac G5 June 2004 and sadly, my iMac G5 died (f*cking Radeon 9600)
And even If I'll try, I NEED dual screen, and the 9600 XT only have 1 DVI, and I don't have that freaking expensive ADC to DVI adapter
I'll post update If I really decide to try this challenge.
After all, it's only one week. :D

Does anyone know why nvidia didn't just cut off the wasted PCB space on the geforce 4?
Probably so the card would rest in the little support at the other side of the case to reduce strain on the port of the GFX card. Keep in mind if you screw it in properly with no sag that shouldnt be an issue anyways

I'm up for this. I'll replace my usual rMBP with a Power Mac G5 and a TiBook 667MHz.

Two caveats :
I have to use my company supplied laptop for work.
I'll be using the Windows gaming rig for Sim Racing. ;)

The original(rare) retail 4Tis did not have the extra board space. The cards were large and heavy enough that Apple advised removing them before shipping as there was a possibility of damage from the card shaking.

The added PC board engages the the support rails in the card cage to help support the cards. This allowed Apple to safely ship computers with these cards installed.

In the AGP G5 years, this was also done with the 6800 Ultra, although if I'm not mistake the circuitry does extend mostly to the end. When the G5 moved to PCIe, the 7800GT and FX4500 had a metal brace and a piece of PCB to support them.

Most Mac Pro cards to the same, and you'll find now that virtually all of the better GPUs you buy are long enough to engage these supports.
[doublepost=1481906565][/doublepost]Nick,

I can't promise anything, but I'll TRY to make it work with a DLSD, Quad, and Quicksilver(or dual 2.7 if I've changed it out until then). Of course, I have several other PPC computers that I do use regularly, so those won't factor in.

There's a decent chance I'll still need the Mac Pro at work, but I can get a lot done with the Quad. I might exchange places of the two in my office to reduce the temptation-I actually used the Quad in this same location before I got the MP, and being able to more or less plug and play it with my current set-up will take the sting off.

I just went on OWC to buy a brand new IDE 250 gb hard drive, 2 512mb sticks and got a Geforce 4 from Ebay. I feel those using a G5 will have a lot better time than I will on my windtunnel mdd.

This sounds like it is turning out to be an expensive challenge for you. What did all of those parts total up to be?

Can we do this starting on January 1st and ending on the 7th? I'm gonna need Office 2016 or pages 2016 after that. No choice. But, Id love to film this and I'm in either way.

That was actually my original idea and I am down for it.

And even If I'll try, I NEED dual screen, and the 9600 XT only have 1 DVI, and I don't have that freaking expensive ADC to DVI adapter

The ADC to DVI adapters were made by a number of third party companies like Belkin and can be had for $20.00 or so online. The DVI to ADC adapter (used to connect DVI equipped Macs to an older ADC display) are more expensive and sell for about $50-$75 at this time. Based off of the post, I think you need the cheaper dongle style adapter.

MDD Windtunnel $20
Geforce 4 TI guy was selling it at a $99 buy it now and I offered $50+$15 Shipped
250GB IDE HDD $25
512 MB Pair $20
Shipping $23 overnight from OWC
ADC/DVI $26 Shipped
Total After everything for this MDD that will be closeted after the challenge

$179

Would of been easier to buy a G5

Count me in , I got a G5 , 2 x 1.25Ghz Powerbook G4's 12" ( one with SSD ) , a 1.33Ghz iBook G4 12" , a 15" DLSD Powerbook G4 and a rMBP 2.6Ghz Core i7 , a Lenovo Thinkpad X220 12"
( and lots of network gear, Intel Nuc, Sun Fire T1000, Sparcbook 3GX, Odroid-W )
but I use the :

- G5 currently for all the heavy Qemu stuff I'm toying around and trying to connect a Wacom tablet for Omnigraffle Pro
- the rMBP connected to a Thunderbolt Display to watch TV Series/Movies ( currently typing on it )
- Powerbook G4 1.25Ghz, SSD one for all Macports, light Qemu stuff and Networking tools
- Lenovo Thinkpad had to go to the DarkSide and is running Windows 10 and is my work laptop

I'll just leave the Thinkpad at work, don't need at home anyhow and take back my 12" G4 as my commute laptop on the train ride to work and use it in the evening too during the challenge.

Only real challenge is getting the Powerbook to stream/connect to the Thunderbolt display ? Any suggestions ?

Should I add my name to the list on the 1st post ?

Only PPC-"pit stop":
My mechanics (the A-Team):
- PowerBookG4 13" 1.5GHz
- PowerBookG4 15" 1.67GHz DLSD
My reserver (B-Team - "B" like better: better&faster," but currently offline, 'cause' I like to use notebooks)
- PowerMacG4 MDD 2x1.25GHz
- PowerMacG5 2x2,2GHz

I'm with you at the challenge but I have to rely on my faster intel-mac workhorses, since a lot of scanning/OCR-stuff has to be done every day ...
Most of the rest of my stuff can be done pretty nice with my A-Team!

@Goftrey: would it be too much to ask you make a video series on the challenge as another final series for PPC Hub?

Pfft don't tempt me! Seriously though I'm pretty much done after the next part of this G5 series goes up, and not to give too much away but I kinda sorta already completed this challenge with my Quad during the time that I was recording and editing the videos. And I do make a point of it in the next part so I think I've pretty much said everything I would've wanted to say already.

Hmm.. I should get a monitor next week and if backing up from a Leopard disk image goes well via the Tiger DVD, I'll try taking part in the challenge with my 400MHz G4 Sawtooth. Hopefully Leopard won't crash applications randomly like Tiger does in 32-bit colour mode (defective Rage 128 Pro :? I have no issues with random crashes on MacOS 9/10.2 and Linux, only Tiger..), I'll be forced to tether with my iPod Touch 4 via PDAnet since I don't have an Ethernet connection where my Mac will be placed nor does it have an Airport card (as of yet) so is it still valid if I rely on tethering from my iPod for internet?

Hey guys count me in too. Will be using my DLSD, PowerBook 12 inch 1.5 and either my G5 quad or dual 2.3. May even switch to an iPhone 3GS, jailbroken of course :)

I'm ok with the first week, I'll be getting back from a trip on the 1st, so I think it'll be interesting to get back and be limited to the older Macs right from the get go. I'll just have to wait on importing my photos and stuff like that. :)

That's still valid. I have never heard of such thing since you wrote the above. I may have to try that!

you guys do what you want to do and i hope you find it fun. me personally, this challenge thing doesn't make any sense. also this coming from someone who uses a ppc every day. but it's not all that i use. nor care to.

This challenge will be interesting for me. I don't use PPCs hardly ever so jumping from an i7 to a G5 will be a difficult swap, and see if my work flow would allow me to use a PPC. To others that use PPC daily this challenge is not really a challenge to them.

This was included on purpose to give the card added support while installed in the Mac, and it serves no other function. The end of it slots into a metal grove that you'll see when you open up your Power Mac G4.

Still seems a bit overpriced for a 4Ti, but then again it's a rare card and I managed to score one for a decent deal last spring. I assume Mac OS 9 use is important to you, for Mac OS X there are certainly better cards but they don't support acceleration in Mac OS 9.

So from the looks of it, the challenge will take place from January 1st to January 7th!

PDAnet is a piece of software that allows you to tether via USB from your iDevice (not sure if works on more recently versions but works like a charm from 3.1 to 6.1.6 at least). The software is only available for OS X Leopard and fortunately supports PPC. You need to have the PDAnet client in your iDevice so it needs to be jailbroken of course, it's shareware but the free edition works well enough and has no data caps (Don't know if you can still buy it as it's a tad old)

EDIT: Works on my iPad Air on 9.3.3 too

I'm quite sure a tuned G5 would be as fast as my Intel windows PC. Too a shame here in Italy even PowerPC macs do cost a lot. I would really like to try a G5 tower. I need to use windows because it has several apps which are not available for macs, but if I hadn't to do that, I would certainly join the challenge with my MDD :D
Good luck guys, and let us know how it goes
