iPhone 17 Pro 256GB here. Updated in person at WWDC26, and still indexing since then. I’d love to know what sort of progress it’s made, but as long as the indexing finishes at some point, I think I’ll be alright. If that means waiting a few more days, so be it. My only worry is that I don’t have consistent connection to WiFi…
I do have the new Siri AI, so that’s a plus!

Same here. Got off of Siri waitlist on Wednesday about 5pm, but still indexing as of almost 5pm Friday after install within 30 mins of release. Only 4 GB of photos, 3 GB of music and under 1 GB of Messages on the device. So not really sure what is happening. I've even Soft Restarted a few times this week. Still there.
Apple really missed the boat by not offering a progress bar. They should definitely put one there before it goes GM.

My iPad started indexing on Monday. Finally finished sometime this afternoon. I have about a terabyte of photos in iCloud

My iPhone 13 Pro Max is still indexing, and, twice, during theses four days, my unit get hot, and the screen turn all yellow and become unusable. I have to shut down, let it cool, and restart. Everything work ok again. Indexing is causing too much issue. When will it finish indexing. It’s doing so four 4 days now

17 pro max. Still indexing since right after the event. Neither iPad Pro or iPhone finished. The iPad hasn’t left the house all week. No reason for this.

Agree. Mine’s still indexing, after 4 days! That can’t be right ?
I think it can be.

If you have lots of messages, email, photos, or other iCloud data it’s got a lot of work to do.

It’s clearly running as a low priority background task as there is no perceivable load on the device whilst it’s indexing, at least not to me anyway.

the ‘icloud’ thing confuses me - surely photos are already indexed - it’d done facial/name recognistion on them, already has location information etc - should be able to reuse that without heavy rescanning?

curious to understand the delta on what was previously indexed for search vs what they’re adding now. and how big that’ll be to store (presumably local for quick access)

It would be convenient to have a percentage of completion.

Probably impossible to guess that considering all the different types of data it has to index. Just think about all the data pulled from photos; image categorization, text recognition, facial recognition, scene detection… now apply all that to any videos which also requires speech recognition!!!!! (I mean, if it does go that deep?)

My iPhone 16 has been indexing for almost 3 days now. But I do have 30+ years of data to scrub through, so I’m not surprised.

I updated to the beta Wednesday 3pm EST on my 17 pro. Indexing finished up last night sometime. Checked my phone at 7am EST this morning(Saturday) and the indexing message was gone. Just thought I’d post my timeline and phone specs.

According to ChatGPT, indexing only happens when connected to a charger and on WiFi.

This could be why it’s taking so long for a lot of us.
ChatGPT isn't gonna know anything about iOS 27. According to Apple, indexing still occurs on battery life, albeit slower.

Same. I have so much stuff though, I'm assuming its normal.

I sure hope that it’s not limited to WiFi only…I don’t have a consistent WiFi connection at my job, and don’t have access to WiFi at my apartment…

iPP m4 16GB: updated right after keynote. Got Siri within an hour but indexing took about 48 hours, with device mainly unused and plugged in.

17PM: updated Tuesday after reading reviews. Siri already approved, but still indexing. Plugged in only overnight. On wifi for 95% of the day.

icloud+ 200 GB plan

Still going. May plug in later today and let it go the rest of the weekend. Photos synching keeps pausing for some reason.

I've not installed 27 yet but this reminds me of mds_stores process running constantly in Activity Monitor on macOS Sequoia and earlier. I believe mds_stores is related to Spotlight, so I turned off Spotlight and denied Spotlight the ability to search certain drives. Then mds_stores went away.

Only downside is Spotlight isn't probably as useful as it would have been otherwise.

But the upside is there's no mds_stores running and running and running and running for hours and hours and hours.
