Can you tell? I mean, really? I bought Star Trek on regular DVD when it came out, then on Blu-Ray when I got a player. I have a 40" 1080 TV and couldn't tell the difference. I think the difference between 720 and 1080 is snobbery, unless you can tell on a bigger TV.

How far away do you sit to watch the movie? For 40" I would say you should be no further than 8 feet. Any further and you won't be able to tell. I sit 12 feet away from a 120" projector screen running 1080p. I watched a DVD on it recently and it was awful.

This is exactly the point of the new AppleTV. It's not meant to be a stand alone, take-over-everything player. It's meant to accompany and compliment your existing setup, and adding in the support to beam content from a iDevice over to it is just icing on the cake.

Thing is, I don't want yet another device to attach to the television. If Apple wants me to buy their device, they need to replace an existing device - DVD player, DVR, whatever.

I suppose for some people the AppleTV may be worth it - but I don't see what it adds for most folks. If you already have any sort of modern device - Tivo, Roku, PS3, XBox 360, Wii, internet-enabled HDTV, etc. - you probably already have all the non-Apple bits already (Netflix, Youtube and other internet streaming, movie trailers). In that case all AppleTV boils down to is the Apple movie store - and frankly, thanks to Requiem I already have that if I want it.

I think there is plenty of room for Apple to come out with a device that doesn't replace something but actually is a new market. Just look at the iPad, they clearly stated it is not meant to replace your phone or your laptop, but it's been very successful. The key thing to success is to make a device that does many things better than everything else in that market.

So basically if it can prove to do certain things better then it might be a real hit: AirPlay streaming between mobile devices, Netflix, Rentals, and more in the future. I will say that so far the AirPlay (and maybe Netflix) part is the only thing that it really does better than others, but I think the device is still early right now.

Unlike the iPad, the market for devices like the Apple TV is already full of tons of devices/solutions, so it is definitely not as easy to be a run away success. Hence why Apple calls it a hobby, they know the potential is there, but it's not 100% perfect yet.

Yay - Shipped

Yay, mine has just been shipped, placed my order 1st Sep at 11:25am PST, and just received notification it's on it's way via FedEx and will be delivered on Wednesday :)

AND it was picked up in Shenzhen China just now... wow, 2 days from China to here, that's better than receiving stuff from the States!

Boom!

Mine just SHIPPED out of China!

Traveling Fed-Ex and set to arrive on Thursday, September the 30th. :D

I keep checking my status, it says its prepared to ship, but not shipped yet.....I am so eager!!!! i want the apple TV!!!!!

Nice, can't wait. I think this price point is going to be great for AAPL and get more people using this. I have always loved my apple TV and look forward to the new one.

Mine is finally prepared for shipment...I won't keep checking the site though. I'll just wait eagerly for the shipment confirmation email. Still excited! :)

I just don't know what to do with my 40GB first-gen. ): ...I have to say, I've got an Xbox 360, PS3, DirecTV HR22 and current Apple TV hooked up to my Onkyo receiver (then to my TV). I use Netflix on my 360 chiefly because it's the easiest of my devices to view Netflix streaming on. The PS3 requires the disc, and on top of that, the Logitech Harmony/bluetooth fix is a pain sometimes (IR-to-Bluetooth lag). The 360's fine, but it's loud as hell.

I contemplated purchasing a Roku box, but not only is that one more box (which isn't a big deal for me anyway), but I'd likely only use it for Netflix.

Bottom line: I'm an avid HD Netflix user, and this thing will hopefully kill two birds with one stone in my setup. Plus AirPlay is looking pretty good. the 99 cent campaign may not have legs, but I'm hoping Apple is going to be open to apps like Hulu Plus down the line...at least something with a subscription model. $10 is about 10-11 shows under Apple's current thinking. $10 on Hulu Plus gets me a lot more, doesn't it?

I may pick one up from an apple store when available just for airplay. But as iOS 4.2 isn't out yet there is no hurry.

If they did open an app store for it which allowed me to run a version of the iOS plex with an interface like the mac version then i would outright buy 3. All my movies are organised on a plex server and it would be great to not hav to hook up a computer to the TV any time i want to play them.

Has anyone in the UK ordered one and had an update?

I personally prefer going into store to pick up my apple items. So hopefully by yhe end of the week they will have them in stock! :D

Do you know if it's being overnighted for a Monday launch? I haven't preordered one but I want to know if Apple Store camping is a good idea.

If it's shipping directly from China there is pretty much 0 chance of it being overnighted for a retail launch. The only way retail stores will have it on Monday is if they somehow shipped it out to stores last week.

International shipments are insanely expensive to do overnight, so you can only imagine how insanely costly that would be to ship to all the retail stores in the US. I have never seen them do that ever in the entire history of Apple retail. They shipped them probably with the same shipping people are getting in this thread, so they will probably end up at Apple Stores on Wednesday at the earliest (especially certain west coast stores), but most won't have it until Thursday or Friday.

Don't worry about camping, this is not a highly marketed item like an iPhone or iPad. They probably won't even sell out of them by the end of the day, you would be crazy if you are thinking of camping for it. I mean when was the last time Apple sold out of a new product on the first day when they didn't even announce the day/time it would be available in stores? Hmm maybe iPods, but this isn't a big product launch, it's a "hobby" as Apple openly claims.

I can't wait to get mine. If you have a developer store account you can get it for $89 - hard deal to pass up.
Do you mean an old ADC discount? $10 is hardly worth that! I'd spend the discount on a new system, then sell my old system!

still waiting

I am still waiting for my order to ship!!!!:(:(:(:(

I am eagerly awaiting this box, I cant wait to use air play and netflix without having to hook up my laptop to the tv

Menus really poping

Have been using my previous generation since April 2007 and have noticed the service has sped up in recent weeks. Must be getting ready for newly converted :apple:TV fans.

Delay - I've changed my mind ...

Has anyone in the UK ordered one and had an update?

I placed my order on 01 September ... got fed-up with the delay, and with no facility like Netfix in UK, decided that at UK£ 99 = US$ 99(!!) I'll wait and see what happens. Great idea, though. Cancelled my order yesterday.

I ordered mine on Sep.1st at 11:43am pst:D

I was thinking about getting this to wire it up:

http://www.amazon.com/NETGEAR-Power...r_1_3?s=gateway&ie=UTF8&qid=1285558683&sr=8-3

Any thoughts?

I use the 85Mb version of this and I love it. I stream recorded HDTV shows from my Hauppauge tuner on my Windows 7 PC to my Xbox 360 through Windows Media Center. Wireless wasn't fast enough to stream it, but the powerline adapter was. To get back on topic my Apple TV status is shipped, I can't wait!

There is no delay...at the Sept 1st Keynote, Jobs said that it will be available in about 4 weeks which brings to Sept 29th. Guess what...I ordered on Sept 1st and my delivery is scheduled to arrive on the 29th. Obviously, the demand seems to be higher than expected since the ones who place orders later in september will get the Apple Tv around mid-october. As for Netflix, it was just launched in Canada last week and I"m still on the fence if it's worth it for now...selection seems limited and pretty old too...

Wasn't Star Trek filmed in the 60s? I think it's best to do a comparison with video shot in HD with a modern video camera.

Yes it was. But like all tv shows back then, it was shot on 35mm motion picture film which has a butt load more resolution than the current HDTV specs. So, what you saw back in the 60's on your tv set was nowhere near the true resolution of the image as originally captured. I bought the re-mastered Star Trek original series and I was blown away at how much detail there was. In fact, it was so detailed it gave away a lot of the construction details of the set and props that were never distinguishable on tv back then.

Even today, many shows are still shot on 35mm and telecined for broadcast. It's just that with HDTV, we don't lose nearly as much detail as back then.

Ordered one, IE, no update yet. Didn't order until 7pm GMT, so I won't be at the head of the queue.

We've been waiting for an affordable way to stream content from my iMac to the TV (other than horrible kludges involving hooking up the MacBook Air). The old Apple TV was just too expensive to justify for that. Lack of Netflix or rentals in IE doesn't bother me - we wouldn't use them anyway.
