I think there is plenty of room for Apple to come out with a device that doesn't replace something but actually is a new market.

Ok, I'm curious, what new market is this AppleTV bringing with it ? Internet Streaming ? Nope. Internet "Rentals" ? Nope. Local streaming of media ? Nope.

... so what is it ?

Has anyone in the UK ordered one and had an update?

I personally prefer going into store to pick up my apple items. So hopefully by yhe end of the week they will have them in stock! :D

I'm in the UK and ordered mine on the 1st September and mine now says Prepared for Shipment.

Mine is showing as prepared to ship (to the UK) but had an email saying it had shipped with delivery on or before Thursday 30th

TV show rentals from iTunes.

Netflix streaming on an Apple device directly connected to your TV.

AirPlay.

None of which are new markets. Again, Internet show rentals is nothing new. Netflix streaming on a device directly connected to your TV is not a new market either (hint, behing an Apple device doesn't make it a new market, that's not a feature). Airplay is just DLNA in a proprietary package. Nothing new there either.

Did you even try ?

ovrlrd said that there is plenty of room for Apple if their device is a new market. So which new market is it ? Or are they offering a lackluster option in an already existing market ?

I'm getting an AppleTV; only to stream MY content.

TV shows & movie rentals are over-priced and very limited selection.

Netflix has been done time and time again.

Too bad the AppleTV is a DAAP or Airplay only streamer with a 720p output. DLNA would open so many more options for storage and is the open standard. But I guess Apple only uses or pushes open standards when it serves their purpose...

I still can't see that these will be anything other than a complete flop in the UK.

TBH I doubt 95% of the population have ever even heard of Apple TV.

Freeview, Sky and Virgin totally rule the UK.

I cannot see any use for this device unless it could tie into one of these 3 current systems.

If you have Freeview, you have it so you don't have to pay any extra on top of the TV Licence you have to pay by law to watch live TV on any channel.

If you have Sky or Virgin then you already pay to have access to all the channels you would want.

Perhaps it will do in America?

A little short sighted, don't you think? It's just like saying that OS X is comparable to any other UNIX-based OS.

Considering the popularity of iDevices and the app store, there is a potentially huge market for the ability to stream apps to the largest screen in your house.

Can't quite figure out Apple shipping priorities. My order was at 11:28am PDT on the 1st, and my status still hasn't changed. Yet orders placed the day after mine are already showing shipped. Called Apple on this a few minutes ago and they said everything was OK with my order, so that isn't it.

Why would they ship newer orders before older ones????

You are the same person who thinks that an iPad is just a big iPod Touch.

Yes, that would be shortsighted. Most other Unix-based OS out there offer much more as far as enterprise grade features go. Seriously Apple, an integrated volume manager too much to ask for ?

But that wasn't your point, I know.

Last I checked, Airplay doesn't stream apps. And if you don't understand why it never will (hint, touch screen input doesn't work when you're not touching the screen doing the output), I don't really see your argument that Airplay isn't just DLNA in a proprietary package.

Call me when the situation changes.

Mine arrived today! It is such a small package! I got my HDMI cable from Radio Shack and plugged it it. It is awesome so far. I will give an update later today. I ordered mine September 2. I live in Oregon so I guess that's why it shipped here first? (closer to China)

Update: Ok Like I said before it was delivered today via Fed Ex. I had to sign for it. I live in Oregon so closer to China is why I got it so fast? Anyway it is so cool. I've had a chance to play with it and all I can say is WOW. I've got a big Toshiba 65HM167 65" DLP TV (1080p) but the 720p looks like 1080 on it- I can't tell the difference! It does not make any noise. I already have Netflix through my 1080p Tivo and just signed up through the Apple TV and Netflix looks the same. Streaming is fast. Can wait for Apps for this. I'm going to the Apple Store to buy one more for a friend. Damn its small. Remote is cute and simple.

Dude, the Apple TV streams Netflix along with all other content in your iTunes library. Learn before you post....

I bet most people would not be able to tell te difference if 1080p and 720p were side by side... Yes there are big differences, but the abeahe person doesn't care...

Why buying an Apple TV when I have Netflix? Netflix has more shows and is way cheaper. I mean, I have my MBP and I can watch a bunch of stuff and the Apple TV does not have as much content as Netflix.

I do not get it, the Apple TV may be better in a year from now but today is not a good deal at all.

Why do you feel the need to comment? It doesn't fit for you, it fits for a bunch of the rest of us.

I have a netflix account too. I have a MacBook I CAN connect to the TV. I also have an XBox360 that plays Netflix movies and movies off of my network share system. I choose to not have to deal with connecting the macbook every time I want to watch something on my TV (sometimes I like to watch something on my TV while working on my Mac) and I would rather save the $30 a year on XBoxLive that I'm required to have for Netflix. I'd also like to have the ability to use my XBox back when my wife wants to watch Netflix on the big screen.

At $100, it rivals the price of a Roku and to me the difference in price is worth the ability to use AirPlay. It just seems like a no brainer buy for my needs, moreso than most Apple devices and glad I waited to buy one for this new generation.

, I don't really see your argument that Airplay isn't just DLNA in a proprietary package.

1. AirPlay uses push, DLNA is only a pull.
2. I prefer not having to manage a bunch of directory structures and am happy to let iTunes do it, I have a previous DLNA system server that is more than happy to let iTunes chew up some CPU time to replace this.
3. If you've ever tried to use DLNA devices, you'd realize the protocol sucks and it's full of bugs and holes and is mostly wrapped by a bunch of other companies attempts to proprietize it. I welcome Apple to fix this area.

Order Date: Sep 1, 2010 at 11:49 AM PDT
Ship Date: Sep 27, 2010
Estimated Delivery: Sep 30, 2010 by 4:30 PM CDT

The Estimated Delivery is usually either a day behind or dead on, so it looks like I'll have mine Wednesday or Thursday. I can't wait because I sold and shipped my Roku back on the 1st and have been missing my Instant Netflix!
