Just got my shipping notice 5 minutes ago. Delivery set for October 1st. I have 2 on order, and surprisingly, I have 2 tracking numbers.

Last I checked, Airplay doesn't stream apps. And if you don't understand why it never will (hint, touch screen input doesn't work when you're not touching the screen doing the output), I don't really see your argument that Airplay isn't just DLNA in a proprietary package.

Call me when the situation changes.

Airplay will stream any video or audio playing from apps. If we can set aside nit-picky semantic arguments here, and use our imaginations, this is a cool new feature. It's been stated what whatever is playing in the standard media player control (NOT just the iPod app), can be thrown up to the TV with the AppleTV. So say another app, that isn't ported to AppleTV (yet -- Hulu Plus anyone?), is playing media and there isn't a way to turn it off, or if there is they haven't chosen to do so, you will be able to play that stream directly on the big screen. That is pretty neat, and more compelling that simply streaming your local media.

I have a 63" TV and you can tell a little difference between 720 and 1080. Big difference between DVD and HD.

for sure.
I have an Elite Pioneer 60" and the difference between Blu-ray HD and DVD's are HUGE. Also I can easily see a difference between 720p and 1080p. Not as noticeable but you can see it. All at 12 feet distance.

Apologies if this is an asked-and-answered question, but do we know whether there will be a firmware (whatever it's called) update for current/old Apple TVs? It seems to me that one is unnecessary, but just curious if the UI will be different between the new Apple TV and the old.

I'm in the UK, and the only change I've seen is that this morning I could cancel my order, and now I cannot.

Otherwise it still says Not yet shipped; Estimated Shipping: September :(

Not sure if this means a shipping date is imminent?

Don.

Mine, Sep 1, 2010 at 11:58 AM PDT, to be shipped to Ireland, is prepared for shipment on the US store, status unchanged on the Irish store.

From previous orders the option to cancel disappears when the order is being processed and readying dispatch.

Watch the keynote. The UI is different in the new one. Certain things have been moved around. It looks like it might be a step back for those of us that have a lot of our own content, as that all appears to be moved to a dedicated menu called "Computers", instead of all movies (ours or rented) in a "Movies" menu, all TV Shows (ours or rented) in a "TV Show" menu, and so on.

Like many, I doubt we'll see the new UI on the old hardware. If you want the new UI, Netflix, Airplay and 720p30fps instead of 720p24fps MAX, you probably have to buy a new unit.

If an App Store is created for AppleTV, it will have AppleTV apps. If you need to touch your iPod's screen to control your TV, hint, you're not looking at the TV. That's the problem with touch screen input, it requires that the output be on the same surface your are touching, because it lacks tactile feedback to otherwise indicate what you are touching.

Expand your imagination. I can easily envision VISUAL and aural feedback so that I can look up at one screen, while holding and touching another in my hand... perhaps a transparent blossom of tinted color on the viewing screen to correspond to where I am touching on the device in hand, with a sound like a keyboard clicking or button being pushed... mmmm wonder if there is a patent on that?

Regardless, don't limit the future to what has been done before. I have no doubt clever people will come up with clever new solutions to solve the problems you describe.

and a heck of a lot of fun it will be too.

Apple TV on its way

It was shipped from Shenzhen, China, checked in at Lantau Island, Hong Kong, and is scheduled to be at my door on Thursday, Sept. 30, fulfilling Steve Jobs' promise of being shipped in late September. I ordered it the first day it was available.

No, there isn't, because there's tons of prior art. Expand my imagination ? You just described the good old mouse cursor. Might want to try expanding yours...

Touching a surface you're not looking at is called a trackpad. We've had plenty of those in the last 30 years. The fact is, the way input works on iOS for touch devices is not how a trackpad works. Both don't really translate well in many circumstances.

The fact is, touch screen input doesn't work if you're not looking at the screen you're touching* unless you get some sort of tactile feedback, which current iDevices lack.

Don't get me wrong, I don't doubt AppleTV apps could be a reality, just not "iPhone apps on AppleTV". AppleTV apps would change my mind on this little device and would make it an insta-buy for me.

Yeah, they would have to be controlled via a remote like all other tv functions. Maybe if they had a wii-like controller you could get close to the touch pad interface but most likely just the standard Apple remote.

That's right. Too many people can't seem to grasp that if a current app requires you to look at a screen to click the right spot to make something happen, it's not going to work well when you are looking at a different screen. Just fire up the remote app now on an iDevice and do some simple(lest) remote control functions without ever looking at your iDevice. Note that those don't have a timer ticking down, or a bad guy about to shoot/eat/kick/etc you unless you click the right action.

Using iDevices to control Apps for a future :apple:TV update only works if those apps don't require you to look at where you are touching, such as any apps that can work by tilting the iDevice. If you have to see the screen to touch the right spot to make something happen, you'll need to have your eyes on the little screen in your hand, not the big screen nearby.

Maybe the dream is narcism driven, as in, you guys can watch how great I am at playing this game on my iDevice. We all know how much fun it is to watch other people having fun playing games, right?

My expectations are that apps- even game apps- will eventually come to a big update for :apple:TV. However, especially in the case of traditional game apps that need coordinated interface interactions to play, some dedicated control much more like game machine controllers will probably be a needed accessory. Or, you can just focus your eyes on your iDevice.

To loosely conjure a famous gamer from a classic Who song: that deaf, dumb & blind kid, couldn't play a mean game of pinball if the buttons were only digital ones under a flat pane of glass.

I havent bought one yet. When will they be available at the Apple Store?

Just got an iMac yesterday and need something to stream media. I used to use windows media through my xbox to my tv. I heard this will act as a media streamer!

This might be a bit of a stupid question, but I wanted to make sure; Apple TV will connect through wifi correct? it wont need to be physically connected to my router...
