With regards to addons, I think Blizzard do recognize their usefulness for players, even in the developers' posts on the official forum, they do take popular addons into consideration. Apart from that, they stop at telling the players to use addons to avoid putting their stamp of approval on their use.

When an occasional good one they like crops up, they include some form of it in a patch as part of the client.

Actually many add-ons can be borderline "cheating".

I mean, you just know exactly where to go and what to do by the add-on.

There is an add-on that does that- what's it's name? I just go to thottbot if I want to know where to go.;)

Even "logging" all the data with drop-rates. The way you're "supposed" to play it is to find out for yourself where to get what and build relations to share info. But when a large section of the populace automate data uploads into servers for "statistical analysis"...

Then you have the "encounter timing" add-ons that spam not only info for you, but info for the entire party...

Which add-on is that? Just curious. Thanks!

MobInfo records everything related any mob. Drop rates, resistances, money drops, experience gain etc.

Only guessing but 'encounter timing' might been things like Omen where it monitors your threat level and will tell you when a mob changes target or leaves a target etc. And there is an option in Questhelper to report your progress in quests to party members too.

DeadlyBoss also reports and blocks whispers to a person who is in a raid.

Was groupcalendar one of them? And durability status i think...

Believe it or not, "more than one row of buttons" was one of the original add-on steals. ;)
I'm still waiting for a Blizzard threat meter. During the last expansion, it's really annoying that omen keeps updating. I thought they mentioned something about adding it in during this expansion.

Thanks for the info! But is there an addon that tells you were you go to conduct and complete quests? I thought the poster said that...

As far as exploration, I have mixed feelings. Part of me really does want to explore and in Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion, I really did. But Wow is all about 1)Get Quest 2) Find Quest Location and Complete 3) Turn in Quest so you can LEVEL! :) I feel more pressure to complete quests than just exploring for fun. The one occasion I might just go out and cruise and that if I am looking for plants or ore.

I know the feeling. There is too much ground to run around that after a while it gets tedious.
Try Thottbot and Allakhazam for quests. What happens is you download their add-on and you contribute to uploading logs of your activity periodically to their server. Then it like gets updated to their site. There are other add-ons that do stuff for personal as well like auctions, player kill journal, etc.

WoWWiki has player driven hints.

That questhelper is neat because you used to have to always type. "1m 2 go", "How many u need?", "done?", "done?", "done???". :p

There should be encounter assistants for higher levels where it tells you when an "event" will occur and stuff like that, unless they changed the mobs to be more randomized. Check Curse. I remeber there was this addon that allowed you to set priorities to auto-target certain debuffed party members and cast the appropriate cure spell. LOL You became this "button smasher" during large raids.

Get Quest Helper if you want an addon that tells you where to go to complete quests.

You can download and update all addons using a program called WoW Matrix. I recommend it, as it's very easy to download, manage and update everything.

Also, www.wowhead.com is my favorite WoW related site. You can throw anything that exists in WoW in the search bar and get info, read comments, etc.

Try the Carbonite addon. Many people like it better then the quest helper addon.

As usual, Blizzard has absorbed some player-made tools and interface mods and made those concepts official parts of the game client. With Wrath, players now have access to a calendaring system to keep track of special events and gatherings. That might sound silly to a less-serious player, but if you've been playing World of Warcraft long enough to get this deep into the game, you probably understand how important it can be to stay organized with your posse. This calendar is available both in-game and on the WOW website, which is handy.

GB Review - 5/5

Woot! Now we need an Exchange Server (World of Warcraft Edition)! :p

Thanks Nikos and Plutonius. I will check these programs out. Right now I am primarily using Thottbot for my quest info. It's not too bad as I put WoW into a window, and search thottbot.

Question: How do you interact with these programs while playing? Do you pull up your quest log and select a quest for a link or do you pull up the add-on and scroll down a list of quests?

Thanks!

Right now I'm pushing my L57 Hunter to get him over to Outlands. Right now I plan on cycling through 3 or 4 toons. I enjoy the variety of game play different classes provide. Although I realize it could mean that I'm not as good playing any one class as I could be.

.

My suggestion is try it. A personal experience is better than a few word....They can always be removed....

Bill....:apple:

One of the things I've found with newer players is that they can get sucked into the bored-with-main-so-make-countless-alts and it takes them forever to get a 70/80. The game becomes vastly easier when you get a max level toon, if you ever need money, jump on your main, do dailies and BAM, 100g in a hour in IQD.

The game opens up so much at level 70/80.

I do have a L63 Pally over at Outlands. I realize your cash flow increases significantly over there. :)

Carbonite shows the quest list on your main screen (up to 6 quest and it's based on distance from the quest). It also displays a map to display the quest on. You can set the size and how bright the list/map is so it will not interfere with you and have the list/map hide while in combat. You can mouse over the list and it will give you a summary of the quest. When you click on the quest, the quest objectives will show up on the map along with a direction line to the quest. The map also shows distance and time to get where you are going.

Quest helper is hugely invaluable. It will really help make questing more efficient. I will still use Wowhead or Thottbot sometimes but, for the most part I get everything I need in game w/ Quest Helper.

I'm inclined not to pay a subscription for carbonite. :(

I installed Quest Helper and did not like the window as I'm having clutter issues with my WoW screen. I should have waited to see if it went away during combat, but I did not. Maybe I'll try it again and verify. Thanks for the info.

If you are talking about interacting with databases like Thottbot and Allakhazam...you don't. It's a "background task". They just upload events that they decide to "record" on a periodic basis (I think the upload is when you log on or something like that) to their servers and via some automated programs...update the info on the Web pages. It does statistical calculations to list coordinates, drop point/rates, and whatever.

Some trivia...
Thottbot and Allakhazam and WoWhead are actually owned by the same company. WoWHead was an acquisition last year(citation).

There is also a social networking site for WoW called Rupture.
It must be good because EA recently acquired it for $15 million I think. It's made by that dude that started the chain of internet pirating called Napster ironically. LOL

It's pretty good to cycle classes if you like it. It allows you to understand class roles better because eventually, you will be playing with more and more ppl to get anywhere. In the end-game, you can't do anything by yourself (unless you're a "trade player", but even then it helps to have allies). An added bonus is you get more Rest XP and can meet more ppl and make more friends. :) Eventually they will all reach end-game and you will have more ppl to play with who know and trust you...or hate you (depending on how you decide to play). ;)

What resolution do you run WoW at? If you're having clutter issues, you can, depending on your eyesight, use the 'UI Scale' slider in the Video or Interface options. Make it on the smaller end so you can fit more stuff on screen without blocking the view.

Look up TitanPanel for a neat bar that keeps all important info at the top of your screen neatly. Cartographer3 is a very nice map addon too.

Is there anyone on Caelestraz here?
