So I updated the app and I got the new icon but NOT the UI - anyone else? No idea how else to "update" it to get the new UI.

Same issue on my end. I even deleted the app and reinstalled. Guessing the layout is on Instagram's end and hasn't been pushed to our accounts yet?

They're throwing away a lot of brand equity by tossing the old iconic icon for a generic neon gradient. There is nothing about the new design that references IG. I guess it makes sense--IG has gone from a quirky, photos only app to a generic, nearly advertisement only app.

Seeing an ad every 15-20 posts at most is hardly "advertisement only."

The new design either messes with my eyes or makes my photos to have more contrast than before.

love it. black & white nice and simple. i don't need a funky color scheme to look at ****ing pictures get over it people

This is what you get when you clamor for a flat design. You get disappointed because "flat" design isn't as great as it seems for a lot of uses. The only really good flat designs are the ones that started that way. Anything non-flat that moves toward flat design feels like regression because "going flat" is regression by definition.

You all didn't learn your lesson from iOS 7. You ask for a flat design to replace one you're mildly content with, and then they give you what you think is bland, generic, and unoriginal. Then you regret it.

No, it's not. Instagram's logo isn't the camera, it's the "Instagram" name. The camera was just an icon... and an ugly one at that.

thats why u can buy merchandise of the logo? theres even a camera designed after it and everyone could tell its Instagram without seeing the word just like the swoosh of nike

And why does the instagram logo now look like it's owned by Samsung? Milk Music. VR, etc all use this gradient in their app icon

I like the new icon. And the new UI. But I also barely use the App. The old icon was very busy compared to modern design and just flattening that design would have left it still very busy. I kind of wonder how they ended up with the color scheme though. Maybe it was just an effort to differentiate the app from other social media apps by color. On my phone Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter are all shades of blue. This will stand out in comparison to them.

Luckily, I have a backup of the old .ipa on iTunes (which was v7.21.1). I understand Instagram's change to the new icon to try to fit in with Jony Ives flat UI but, it's too radical. I'm really getting tired of this flat UI. On a surprising note, I found out that the new update supports iOS 7 and greater. Pretty Interesting since the last iOS 6 compatible update (v6.5.1) does not support the newer Instagram Direct Message system.

So far, I hear more complaints than compliments about the update. Maybe Instagram will revert back to a similar one?

On the bright side, you can create a shortcut to the new Instagram app without jailbreaking. I've done this to a few of my apps.

I quite like the icon. Change generally is never met with acclaim at first. Give it a few years and everybody will be talking about the iconic Instagram colour palette for the icon.

these non-sensical designs...between instagrams new goofy gradient (which they purposely combined all of their previous colors into) and Ubers' nearly unrecognizable icons.

They are "unique glyphs" that can be trademarked.

The Ü that Uber was using was not unique enough for trademark. The same with the Instragram camera as it was too common of a shape. Thus, going to unique abstractions or unique alterations makes them distinctive enough for trademark. A good trademarked logo can significantly increase the value of a company making it more noticeable and memorable. The simplified Apple logo falls into this type of graphical art.

Curious to see if they have similar legal console.
