New request by popular demand: Apparently, "About This Mac" doesn't actually tell us how much RAM is being used by and made available to the system. One more screenshot, please: The following part of Activity Monitor (at the bottom)

If OS X can indeed use the additional RAM, this will show it (so I'm told).

Command+Shift+4, please. You can put to rest a lot of debates. :)

"Snow Leopard is ready to support up to 16 terabytes of RAM — about 500 times more than today’s Mac computers can accommodate." via the horse's mouth

Wow what a waste! There is no need for that. Good job throwing money away.

says who? just because you wouldn't use it doesn't mean that other people won't or can't. It's not your money why tell someone they are wasting it? do you know what he uses his computer for? know how much money he has to begin with? NO so give it up, there is no need for your pointless comments.

It's none of my business, but what do you do with 8GB+ anyway, I just bought the 8GB kit for my MBP and I never go over 7GBs of usage

Depends, I end up swapping with 8gb of ram on a 13" MBP, and as we all know no one that uses a 13" does any real work. ;)

I think that about all laptops, especially since RAM-intesive apps are best on desktops and laptops turn into frying pans when you do "real work". But I do all my work on mine without a prob

OP, thanks for posting your results! I saw the 16 GB kit on OWC's web-site and I thought a laptop with that much ram is a "true desktop replacement."

This thread is GOLD!
OP please post how you intend to push that 16GB.

You plan on making the next Animated 3D Disney feature on your laptop alone?

So sad to see all of the haters out! Just enjoy the spec porn...I sure am enjoying it living vicariously through him. I wish I could afford 16GB. :)

I think a lot of people are forgetting that for professional use $5k isn't very much money for a computer, considering professional software can cost 2x-3x that amount.

Well regardless what some of you may think some of us actually need 16gb of ram. I just shot 700 images this morning and processed 370 and all 4 cores going at around 96 percent and only 1.5 gb of ram left on the system. So my resources are really tapped on this and opened safari and tried a few things and froze up 3 times since I simply ran out of resources for the machine to handle a big batch processing of files. So yes more Ram would certainly have helped in this situation it is not a matter of what you are using it is a matter of what you have free for your system to run. I personally would like to get to at least 12gb right away as 1600 dollars is just a bit much right now but even that is pricy which is fine these prices will drop in time but good for the OP if he needs or wants it than it frankly is no one else's business.

Thanks for sharing. Don't let the teens still asking Mom to buy apps bother you.

+1. Your computer, your money, as long as you're happy and enjoy it, and it helps with what you do, that's what matters. Thanks for sharing the pics and letting us know it actually works!!!! :D Some may say nobody needs that much RAM. My iMac has it, and when I am working, I eat nearly every bit of it up. So anyone that says it's a waste, doesn't have a clue what they are talking about. And even if you don't "need" it, your finances, your business!

Must be a good reason why Apple designed the MBP to only be able to take 8GB. Obviously it doesn't take 8GB, but up to 16GB... But my worry is in a few months the effect it will have on your computer... no one has tested it more than a few weeks???

LOL! Snap!

Anyone who doesn't know what you could use 16GB of RAM for, meet the RAM Disk. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RAM_disk

Very expensive, but unbelievable performance :)

EDIT: I just made a RAM Disk to try it, and ran XBench on it. Score = 953.3 :D with 667MHz RAM.
For comparison, my internal HDD gets 29.6. A decent SSD probably gets ~300.

If you're out in the field and have to edit video it eats up proc and memory pretty quickly. Think any major news organization with a reporter in the field.

Keep in mind that Apple also specs what's available at time of design that can go through QA. The 2011 was engineered months ago, and 8gb notebook DIMM's are just recently hitting the streets.

Case in point, look at the early gen Mac Pros. Apple specs 16gb for memory, but it's common knowledge that they'll flawlessly support 32gb. It's just that 4gb DIMM's weren't available at the time of it's release.

I could be wrong, but I think it's more of an intel thing than an Apple thing. And according to intel, 16GB is supported and fine. Like already said though, during the time the MBP was coming about, such a thing wasn't around for them to test, I guess. But from another thread about this 16GB kit, there was a good link posted about it :)
