$1500

Is 16GB something you NEED? Because that price is going to drop fast.

If it's something you couldn't live without, then cool I guess.

1000+ USD

Why is there so much hate in this thread? Why does everyone else care how much ram op installed and how much he payed. He got it because he needs it, simple as that. I use up all my ram in my MBP and Mac Pro all the time.

As do I. I have 8GB now, give 5 to MacOSX and 3 to Windows 7 in Parallels. The Windows software I run greatly exceeds that but if I give any more ram to Windows, it'll bog down my Mac OS X.

So how about MBPro from June 2007. I have 4gb. Is it possible to upgrade to 8gb? (Apple states somewhere that 6gb is maximum.)

there are problems reported with people using 8gb. Some say it will boot fine, but once you use more than 4gb of the RAM it starts to have a lot of problems. 6 GB seems to work just fine.

awesome! Thanks for posting. And I dont see what the big deal its his money there's a helluva lot worse things you could be into than RAM.

Thanks, I'll stick to 4gb then. Meanwhile I will get the machine run faster in other ways. I plan to dump my superdrive for a SSD 128gb drive which will be my boot disk and... I plan also to jump from Tiger to Snow Leopard. Do you think this machine will be OK for Lion upgrade in July? Any compatibility issues, maybe?

I was wondering the same thing. These people need to calm down.

Btw, I see that you have the 2.3GHz 17" MBP AND a dual-CPU Mac Pro - WHY DID YOU THROW AWAY SO MUCH MONEY!?!?

j/j :D

Other than the outrageous price, I am wondering if you will see the issues that the Late 2008 uMBP's had with 8gig. Yes, it recognized it, but it made the system incredibly unstable.

You'd think Apple would have offered it on the high-end systems if it was supported.

those 8GB modules weren't on the market until March. Apple released these MBPs in February. I'm guessing Apple certifies everything for manufacturing in January. Right now, it's just not worth Apple's time to go figure out if 16GB RAM will work on 2011 MBPs since they don't even sell an upgrade kit for it. I'm guessing, maybe with the next iteration, Apple will announce that yep, all 2011 MBPs will support 16GB of RAM.

Ha..
Congratulations on wasting a hell of a lot of money on bragging rights.
Hope that unused RAM dont get too cold.. It'll likely freeze with your use.

believe it or not, $1600 on RAM may not be that expensive to some people. I had high school classmates drive high end Lincoln Navigators, Ferraris, Porsches, Jaguars, etc to school everyday at just 16 years of age. They'll even spend 10 grand on a plane ticket without thinking about it. $1600 on RAM is nothing to them.

I agree. Don't hate on people for using their macs haha. I need to upgrade to 8 GB....AT LEAST. I currently only have 4GB of RAM, and my swap hardly ever drops below 2GB :'(

I run software on my Macs (Mac Pro with 32GB, MacBook Pro with 8GB and MacBook Air with 4GB) where it's easy to push a single application to use up all available ram. No matter how much ram I buy.
This is hardcore content creation software like Maya, Nuke, SoftImage, etc. The tools artists use to create films, music, art, etc. to feed the likes of you... ie. users, media addicts. More Ram makes our tools faster. Which means it can be worth the investment.

People like you and CompanionCube are ignorant of what it can take to create content. Please stay out of these threads and leave the real work to professionals. Go play with PhotoBooth or something. :p

**** just got real!

I appreciate the work you big boys do with RAM - I do HPC so the supercomputer does all the hard work I just type stuff into terminal :)

QUESTION: Why is it that 8gb is $75 I just ordered off NewEgg but 16gb is $1000+ Isn't that kind of crazy??

because the 8gb is two 4gb sticks, a 16gb kit is two 8gb sticks, and it's a lot harder to fit 8gb onto one stick than to fit 4gb on one stick. If there were more than two SO-DIMM slots on macbook pros, you could easily upgrade to more than 8gb for very cheap.

It's harder to manufacture higher density ram.

Not really. It's about the density of the modules and how difficult it is to make them. At the moment, it's probably quite difficult to make RAM chips with sufficient capacity to give 8GB per SODIMM, hence the high price.

why does he open up a useless thread trying to show off the stupid amount of $$ he spent on ram? if you want that much ram gr8 for you. We don't need a thread for it.

remember being rich and wealthy are two different things. I can easily afford $1600 on ram. But why would i? Just b.c you have money doesn't mean u should waste it and wipe ur ass with 100s

To inform the rest of us, who might be interested, that the system will recognize and utilize 16gb of ram:rolleyes:

If you don't care, why did you take the time to post a useless comment bashing the OP?

I smell a little jealousy...

where does the op state how much he payed in his initial post?
Just finished swapping the sticks. I can confirm that these babies work perfectly. System can recognize them and CS5 suite/vm can use them.
OWC's 16GB ram is from Samsung. The stock ram is from Hynix.
So far I'm free of trouble, I will report here if anything wrong happens in the future.

he made a thread to let people know that the owc 16gb is compatible and working:rolleyes:

there has been threads about that before.

This thread is from march 12, a paltry 2 weeks after the new macbook pros were released. I doubt there were that many, if any, threads made confirming 16gb works before this one.

If you want to police the forums at least pay attention to the details. Just because you saw the thread today, doesn't mean the OP started the thread today in order to "brag about their ability to spend large amounts of money on 16gb of ram"
