I'd love to have 16GB in my computer. Hopefully the price will come down a bit. (a lot). Anyone who has processed any images knows you can eat up 8G easily. Just take a look at all the page outs you get as Aperture starts gobbling up memory.

Boy, this thread is filled with haters.

What do you do with 16GB? Plenty! For one thing, Virtual Machines.

On my current MBP (2.66 i7 2010 8GB) I run VMWare ESX (under Fusion) and within that I have several very intensive virtual machines. I get left with under 500 Megs after I have everything up and running.

This allows me to do customer demonstrations of a very complex setup that would normally require up to eight pieces of equipment... all in a little 15 inch MBP.

So anyway, quit the hating. It's awesome that we can run this much RAM. Thanks for posting the info guys!

Generations from now, internet historians/archeologists will find this thread and laugh at how we're marveling over 16 GB of RAM.

Hope it serves you well, OP. If you have anything left over, think about donating to charity while you're at it.

those of you hating on him for buying it don't realize that if guys like him didn't buy the latest and most expensive stuff, NOBODY would ever get them for reasonable prices.

less than 2 years ago, someone paid 1000 dollars for 2 4GB chips, and you know what? if it weren't for those people, the 2x4gb sets you get today for 75-100 dollars wouldn't be there.

so you should be thanking him. I wish I had 16 gb.

I've got 10 on my MP, and it's a real improvement over the 6 on my other one. Photoshop/Indesign/Illustrator works pretty hard on your RAM if you have a few things going. I can fill up 10GB without much trouble.

I will settle for 8gb now, but I'm just glad that 16 will work. I wonder if 32 will work?

next year or so, someone can find out for us when the 16gb 204pin chips start shipping.

QFT.

Hurry up and buy 16GB kits, people! Help get prices down so 12GB RAM Disks become feasible!!!

Ha..
Congratulations on wasting a hell of a lot of money on bragging rights.
Hope that unused RAM dont get too cold.. It'll likely freeze with your use.

Wow what a waste! There is no need for that. Good job throwing money away.

I find this funny, other people hating because A) they are jealous and probably cannot afford the RAM, B) will never be able to utilize this and/or both.

The OP could be a scientist for all we know. You guys go up to every person using a DLSR with prosumer glass (read: KIT LENS) and make sure they are shooting in RAW? Don't like it, go sweep a highway

I just ran into problems with having only 4 GB for the first time today (2008 unibody MacBook). I can't really open and manipulate 4 GB of powerpoint files and still have the system remain usable. Some of our lab equipment only sends data in large 400MB-1GB graphical files. So, I'm going to upgrade to 8 GB so I don't run into those problems again (the most that this machine can handle).

But, it's good to know that the new ones can handle 16GB. I'll just start buying MBPs for the students with 16GB RAM.

Thanks.

edit: I guess that will raise demand and drive the prices down for the rest of you guys :D

+1. It's amazing how many people here are hating on him for buying the RAM. It's his ******* money. I use my 16 GB in my iMac for my work, nearly every day. Anyone that says it's a waste, has no clue what they are talking about, not in the slightest. It's entirely possible to eat up that much RAM. Would everyone do those jobs with a laptop? No. But some people might need the power and the portability. Just because the haters may not utilize that much RAM, doesn't mean no-one else does.

Anyway OP, don't let them make you feel like you have to prove anything about why you bought it. If you posted a screenshot showing your MBP eating up all 16 GB the jealous folks would still hate on you, probably for having a real job that actually uses such a machine. It's your hard earned cash, and your machine. It's amazing some people think that has anything to do with them, or that it gives them any right to criticize you regardless of if you utilize it or not. How many drive a pickup and use it to haul hay or anything else everyday? How many buy an SUV and fill each seat then go off roading every time? Thought so.

Congratulations to the OP for being able to get 16GB.

Congratulations to Apple for shipping a MBP which can take 16GB. It raises the profile of the MBP line and Apple.

At work I hit a problem where I could have used more than the 8GB my MBP has. Virtual Box* complained that it was experiencing "low host memory" so I had to shutdown a VM. Turns out it needs contiguous memory, so having enough free memory overall isn't sufficient. With 16GB, it would be much easier to find large blocks of contiguous memory.

* VB is being a pain in other ways. I have to boot with the 32-bit kernel as VB doesn't work right with the 64-bit OS X kernel and Sandy Bridge.

I would give praise to the OP if he showed us he was pushing 13GB..

I run software on my Macs (Mac Pro with 32GB, MacBook Pro with 8GB and MacBook Air with 4GB) where it's easy to push a single application to use up all available ram. No matter how much ram I buy.
This is hardcore content creation software like Maya, Nuke, SoftImage, etc. The tools artists use to create films, music, art, etc. to feed the likes of you... ie. users, media addicts. More Ram makes our tools faster. Which means it can be worth the investment.

People like you and CompanionCube are ignorant of what it can take to create content. Please stay out of these threads and leave the real work to professionals. Go play with PhotoBooth or something. :p

16GB? Pffff....try 24GB

And wanting

You have to be careful in this forum as the kiddies will jump all over you :D

Ignore the haters.
Starting to think we need an age limit on MR

Glad to hear you got it working and I don`t imagine you did it just for giggles.
Useful info for anyone considering big Ram in a new MBP, thanks OP

I have a machine at work with 96GB of RAM and it uses every bit of it, even hits swap regularly. I'd love to be able to afford 16GB for MBP. Chances are, I wouldn't use much more than 6GB on a regular basis but it's nice to have the extra resources when I need them (and I would use all of the RAM from time to time, of that I'm sure). We've all been through this cycle before. Today 4GB or 8GB is the norm for a laptop like the MBP, tomorrow it will be more like 8GB or 16GB, soon even laptops will have 96GB or 128GB of RAM. It's just way that things work. I remember the days of 10 and 20MB hard disks that cost $5000 a pop! I never owned one, didn't have the need, but I know people who did.

Congrats on the RAM upgrade and thanks for being one of the early adopters. Your purchase will surely help the rest of us afford this upgrade in the future. Feel free to throw up a few screenshots where you're really hitting that RAM. It will shut up a few "haters" and give warm fuzzes to the rest of us. ;)

All these 'haters' probably shelled out $1k or more for carbon fiber rear spoilers and loud exhausts on their 115 hp CRX's

Why people on here are offended that the OP spent his hard earned money on RAM is just a mystery. I guarantee we could easily find a hundred examples of where they wasted money on more frivolous pursuits.

SALTY! Lol. Next investment - two 27" Ultrasharps to keep track of all those VM's, amirite?!! :p

And that's exactly what the RAM is for OP - an investment that churns out more money than said haters. Eff b---ches, get money, Biggie Smalls.

Those ram prices will drop soon enough and we'll all be upgrading to 16g... In the meantime I assume the OP has some reason why he needs 16g to work so let it be. Its his money and I'm quite glad he tested it and posted here that it works.

Now we know, its expensive but it works.
