Boy, this thread is filled with haters.

What do you do with 16GB? Plenty! For one thing, Virtual Machines.

On my current MBP (2.66 i7 2010 8GB) I run VMWare ESX (under Fusion) and within that I have several very intensive virtual machines. I get left with under 500 Megs after I have everything up and running.

This allows me to do customer demonstrations of a very complex setup that would normally require up to eight pieces of equipment... all in a little 15 inch MBP.

So anyway, quit the hating. It's awesome that we can run this much RAM. Thanks for posting the info guys!

+1 I run something very similar and I couldn't agree more! :)

Thank you for taking the risk!
I use an original MacPro for music (Logic)
The soft synths Au instruments use a lot of ram.
I can run Logic in 64bit and access a lot more ram.
My original Mac Pro has 12 gig of ram and I push that envelop all the time
Seeing the CPU scores with Logic, this machine would cover everything I'd need in a system. But when I saw 8 gigs max I was :(
I am saving my $$ for this now.
House my HD's in 2 external systems (TB when available).
Load her up with ram
I can walk with more horsepower, less AC power being used, space used up!
This is an amazing time.
Half way there saving $$

thank you again
B

Wow what a waste! There is no need for that. Good job throwing money away.

and yet your sig is....

2011 15" MacBook Pro i7 Sandy Bridge 2.0 model
27" iMac *upgraded by me* Core i5 to i7 - 8GB - 1TB Western Digital
iPhone 4 - iPod touch - lots more apple gear

good job throwing YOUR money away. seriously, its his machine, you have no reason or right to talk. or i could say good job throwing away your money upgrading to an i7. why would you need that...you are just a spec bragger. "lots more apple gear" ...no one cares

see what i did there?

Geez this kid got spoiled

when i was your age i used a desktop with 16MB of RAM, and it was the fastest there was....and yes i am not that old

Rev that beast up! I just wanna see activity monitor going "14 GB active memory"... :D

Dayaaaam!

having money is great! Congrats on your 16GB RAM. If I had money like you to spend, I'd actually max out my '11 MBP 17" as well. There are many uses for 16GB RAM.

Other than the outrageous price, I am wondering if you will see the issues that the Late 2008 uMBP's had with 8gig. Yes, it recognized it, but it made the system incredibly unstable.

You'd think Apple would have offered it on the high-end systems if it was supported.

The late 2008 uMBP's never officially supported 8gigs of RAM.

It was only recently that Apple release a Firmware update that changes this and now they do support the full 8gigs. I installed mine in my late 2008 15" 2.53Ghz and works like a dream.

This is great news! Thanks for sharing!

I was so disappointed when the 2011's came out with support for only 8 gigs, so this is just fantastic! Though it is still hovering just above my equipment budget for this year... Here's to hoping it will hit $1,000 soon.

And yes, as so many others have already reminded the kids, some of us use our macs for work. 16 GB is not a lot, and if it saves a desktop, it is not even that expensive.

Thanks again OP, let us know in a month if you had any problems!

Why do some folks act like the OP is spending their money to buy that RAM?

Anyway congrats OP, you have a fantastic setup. Must be great not worrying to much running out of memory when using memory intensive apps. Great. Also its a great look of things to come for the rest of us and it can't come soon enough.

Wow

Pretty good! I read all the comments on this thread xD

I wish I could get 16GB for MBP...but I will wait for when the prices will get lower, like how it usually does...

I have an idea as to why Apple didn't offer the 16GB RAM option at BTO.
Wouldn't it be funny if the reason had to do with Apple's pricing scheme? :D

If OWC has it for 1,600$...figure out how much Apple would price it :p

So the majority of users would go to BTO, look at the 16GB RAM option, have their jaw hang all the way down at the price, then move on. ;)

However, :apple: still should have offered it as an option for people that need it. Wouldn't :apple: have gotten better attention to their MBP's if they stated that it supports up to 16GB of RAM?

Next up, 32GB....

Ha..
Congratulations on wasting a hell of a lot of money on bragging rights.
Hope that unused RAM dont get too cold.. It'll likely freeze with your use.

I like the idea that a random screen shot to make MacRumors happy represents a typical use of a machine.

If you get my activity monitor shot now, I'm using something like 1% of my processing power.

But that's because I don't post screen caps while I'm busy working.

wow dude, you really make me envy right now...

i'm studying photography and at the moment i'm taking pictures of houses and sticking them together in 3 meter long projects, effectively creating entire streets, the files are nearly 15 gb each...

but i'm managing... slowly!

nice ram, contrary to some people here, i'm pretty shure you will use it.

Best Regards
SilverOne

I'm excited by the prospect that the 2011s can handle that much RAM. It's expensive today, sure, but maybe in 2-3 years, prices will come down enough that it's within reach for a lot more folks and extends the useful lifespan of a machine bought today.

Thank you, OP, for confirming that it works.

dammmmmmmmn!!!! i do a lot of 4000x4000 pixels of photoshop works with 300 dpi, and my 8GB is totally damn fine with it. imagine with 16GB! boy i want that but i don't think i need it yet. :D

pfft! 4k x 4x is small potatoes. when you're like me and make a lot of 24" x 36" or bigger posters @ 300dpi, you quickly find that opening 2 posters = "can I haz more than 8GB or ram?"

lol. that's why 8gb of ram is currently enough for me :D

There are a lot of haters and broke fellas here. So what if he spent money on the RAM haha that means he has money and you don't..

Anyway, I'm going to upgrade my RAM to the 16's once I get them this week:D

Good job, look at the post dates :p

Possibilities

Can't we shut up about this?

The thread is about technical issues: is it possible to use 16GB on a new MBP. The answer is YES.

Why doesn't Apple support this officially?
Easy: Apple wants to have customers to have an premium support experience. Solution be conservative about capabilities and you do not have to fix early adopter problems of new hardware.

My new question about possibilities is:
Is 32GB possible on the new MBP? I am sure there are some prototypes out there! And what about 2133 MHz CL 9-11-9 sodimms?
edit: Yes i mean 16GB sticks, there is bound to be research on them in a few memory labs already.

not until we can buy 16gb RAM sticks since there are only two SO-DIMM slots on macbook pros.

obviously, but they are not available on the market yet (afaik only 16gb sticks for desktops), and when they are introduced, they are going to be VERY expensive, just like 8GB sticks used to be.
