I performed a clean install last night and it did not ask me for my Apple ID to install. It only asks for it after the installation is complete and you are setting up iCloud/iTunes. Again, I do not have a developer account.

So strange because mine asked me to login when I tried to clean install

I used the method where you drag the BaseSystem file into Disk Utility. But that shouldn't make a difference, right?

Really confused.

How did you actually do this though? Is there a way to get it it clean install without booting from the USB?

LOL all the OP is worried about is getting updates to a torrented GM? If that's the case all that tells me is he/she wasn't buying Mavericks in the first place, seeing as Mavericks is coming out possibly this month.

OP, rather than getting all giddy after people are saying the GM is the same as the Retail version (which is very true however), you should be more concerned about what is packaged in that installer besides Apple's files. It makes zero sense to use a torrented OS as your main OS especially when most likely it will cost under $30 to buy legitimately with no concerns of installer tampering. Jump in with your eyes open.\

On a different note, I just have to wonder how many people on MR actually buy OS X outside of your new Mac coming with the latest version? This question comes up every time just before Apple is about to release their latest version of OS X. People want to know if they download the GM from an illegal site could they get updates....... followed by, "I was going to buy it when it comes out still". If I had a penny for each time....

But I don't want to boot from the USB. I want to clean install the Mavericks GM onto my internal disk.

Of course. You boot from USB. It then installs it to your internal disk. You then just let it boot regularly, and you're done. Very simple. Give it a go.

Developer version 7b4f4b188f13dd3eabdd86a1cbc433632bf41882

The file I downloaded is showing the md5 as f4e8f21a19eb35d068b95df94f7200c9. I suppose something is amiss for me.

Edited to add:
I did not check the installESD.dmg. I did the main dmg file. No wonder I was getting a different set of numbers. lol Load off my shoulders now that I know my copy is solid.

I fall into your category - I have been running the DPs since DP2 and I am in the process of installing the GM from torrents.

Then, in a few weeks when it is released on MAS, I will purchase it there, not because I feel morally obligated, but because I cannot use internet recovery without it.

I find it strange that I've been seeing such conflicting information on clean installing the GM, this is why I haven't attempted it yet and will probably wait for the official release before making a bootable usb and clean installing.

I've seen several people say that apple ID is not asked at all during install, and several people say that the install can't be completed without it :/

Are you sure you didn't end up in the internet recovery installer somehow?

Have you tried creating a USB with the "createmediainstall" method instead?

You can install without Apple ID by using the method found in this thread. I just did it now and I'm booted into Mavericks :)

The method that doesn't work is the one where you use the BaseSystem.dmg and Disk Utility. But just use the Terminal method. No Apple ID during install. I promise :)

Whatever you do, developer or not, make a Time Machine backup first.

You can restore your entire system from a TM backup using the minimal recovery menu that is installed locally.

check installESD.dmg should be the same as apple GM, dont worry about torrent dmg.

I'd be really wary of installing a torrented OS (even if you intend on purchasing it when it is released). Maybe nobody tampered with it but without knowing the SHA1 of the GM build released to developers why would anyone trust a torrent? I'm not being rhetorical; i'm genuinely curious.

Someone posted the apple hash previously in this thread.

I saw that but it seemed unclear where it actually came from. If it's just a bunch of torrenters posting the hash from their own downloads then it's quite unhelpful. I haven't seen anyone say "i'm a dev, this is the hash" yet.

I will wait for the MAS version. I'm a bit paranoid :)
