Just jumping in to share also;
Did my Dev partition last night and all looked ok (by ok I mean it didn't break any core functions).
Did a clone of the production partition and updated it to 10.9 this morning and have just finished running through the core apps I use and thus far everything looks good.
my only grip so far is the lack of transparency option on the dock in the side position (I miss that, but it is certainly not a show stopper).
As soon as its released, I too shall jump on it in the App Store![]()
On a different note, I just have to wonder how many people on MR actually buy OS X outside of your new Mac coming with the latest version? This question comes up every time just before Apple is about to release their latest version of OS X. People want to know if they download the GM from an illegal site could they get updates....... followed by, "I was going to buy it when it comes out still". If I had a penny for each time....
You don't need to make a bootable drive to install it if you weren't aware.
for some reason that does not work for me on the GM i used to be able to just click on the dmg installer to update (on DPs) but the GM is telling me to make a bootable usb
Worked for me after I dragged it out of the dmg and onto my desktop then double clicked it there.
Im going by the assumption that everyone above who says that they will install the GM of mavericks for free, that they have torrented a pirated copy.
The dilemma I would personally have would be whether someone tampered with the version of the OS that I am downloading, how can you trust a random person of the internet that they have not tampered with the OS. I think waiting a few days, and receiving a version of Mavericks which is secure and comes from a reliable source, is far more valuable than installing it right now from an unreliable source.
Out of curiosity if I install Mavericks without backing up my mac first, what would happen if something went wrong during the installation. I would be forced to reformat right?
Depends on exactly what went wrong. But it's always a good idea to have a backup.
I'd be taking the same risk if I updated from the app store when Mavericks comes out, if I don't have a backup? I need to get my hands on an external hard drive.
I got the gm from the torrent site to test it's stability on my mbp and my pc laptop (and because I just didn't want to wait). When the app store version is released, I will probably wait for a 10.9.1 or 10.9.2 version and then purchase it, unless I find the initial release to be rock solid stable for my uses in which case I will just but it as soon as it's released.
The file I downloaded is showing the md5 as f4e8f21a19eb35d068b95df94f7200c9. I suppose something is amiss for me.
Edited to add:
I did not check the installESD.dmg. I did the main dmg file. No wonder I was getting a different set of numbers. lol Load off my shoulders now that I know my copy is solid.

I can't imagine not having multiple backups.
But then I'm paranoid.![]()
Stick around long enough to see a few drives self destruct and you won't need paranoia![]()

It makes zero sense to use a torrented OS as your main OS
if you by "several places" you mean not apple's developer portal that is the signature of the downloaded dmgI've read in several places that this is the wrong one. The right one that I've seen is 016d4f28a34eedc57c8de300d77f9ca305215d0a.
