Just jumping in to share also;

Did my Dev partition last night and all looked ok (by ok I mean it didn't break any core functions).

Did a clone of the production partition and updated it to 10.9 this morning and have just finished running through the core apps I use and thus far everything looks good.

my only grip so far is the lack of transparency option on the dock in the side position (I miss that, but it is certainly not a show stopper).

As soon as its released, I too shall jump on it in the App Store :)

The lack of transparency is something that appears is not limited to this OS. It has gone down the rabbit hole as well.

Edit to add: I was referring to government. No personal insult made or intended.

On a different note, I just have to wonder how many people on MR actually buy OS X outside of your new Mac coming with the latest version? This question comes up every time just before Apple is about to release their latest version of OS X. People want to know if they download the GM from an illegal site could they get updates....... followed by, "I was going to buy it when it comes out still". If I had a penny for each time....

While I am an advocate of people paying for software they use regularly; I do not take issue with those obtaining it from 'other' sources in order to check if suits them. Where an application does not have an official trial, I have done so in the past; BUT I have paid for all the apps I use regularly (Photoshop, Aperture, CorelDraw! etc).

I have always paid for the OS X upgrade and encourage others to do the same. It's not a lot of money after all considering the investment in the Apple ecosystem that having a genuine machine to use it with entails.

From previous sales figures (10.7 and 10.8) I think the majority of users do actually pay for the legitimate OS X when it becomes available.

This is probably the reason the % of illegal copies in daily use for OS X is less than for Windows.

You don't need to make a bootable drive to install it if you weren't aware.

for some reason that does not work for me on the GM i used to be able to just click on the dmg installer to update (on DPs) but the GM is telling me to make a bootable usb

Worked for me after I dragged it out of the dmg and onto my desktop then double clicked it there.

I got the gm from the torrent site to test it's stability on my mbp and my pc laptop (and because I just didn't want to wait). When the app store version is released, I will probably wait for a 10.9.1 or 10.9.2 version and then purchase it, unless I find the initial release to be rock solid stable for my uses in which case I will just but it as soon as it's released.

Out of curiosity if I install Mavericks without backing up my mac first, what would happen if something went wrong during the installation. I would be forced to reformat right?

Im going by the assumption that everyone above who says that they will install the GM of mavericks for free, that they have torrented a pirated copy.

The dilemma I would personally have would be whether someone tampered with the version of the OS that I am downloading, how can you trust a random person of the internet that they have not tampered with the OS. I think waiting a few days, and receiving a version of Mavericks which is secure and comes from a reliable source, is far more valuable than installing it right now from an unreliable source.

This! Why take a risk? We are talking few days or a week before the release. Just be patient and pay for the upgrade.

Depends on exactly what went wrong. But it's always a good idea to have a backup.

I'd be taking the same risk if I updated from the app store when Mavericks comes out, if I don't have a backup? I need to get my hands on an external hard drive.

Yes. But in the rare event something did go wrong, the worst that would probably happen is that you'd have to reinstall OS X, not wipe the drive.

The GM release is (most times) the same version that will be released to the public. So, barring something major happening, what you have now is what will be in the app store.

The file I downloaded is showing the md5 as f4e8f21a19eb35d068b95df94f7200c9. I suppose something is amiss for me.

Edited to add:
I did not check the installESD.dmg. I did the main dmg file. No wonder I was getting a different set of numbers. lol Load off my shoulders now that I know my copy is solid.

that's the sha1 as opposed to the md5 too

Yes. Absolutely. Get thee a backup. :)

I can't imagine not having multiple backups.

But then I'm paranoid. :)

I essentially keep 3, a full Time Machine backup on one drive and 2 rotated clones. I swap and update the older one about every 2 weeks (or just before I install a new OS).

I've read in several places that this is the wrong one. The right one that I've seen is 016d4f28a34eedc57c8de300d77f9ca305215d0a.
if you by "several places" you mean not apple's developer portal that is the signature of the downloaded dmg
