I have installed and all seems to be well.

I just ran the installer from the desktop.

Check install dmg. I figured you got it from torrent. Developer member here.

I have two different copies and both have the 7b4f sha1, but I noticed one of them has more files in the "contents" folder. So I'm guessing the one with all the contents is the safe one. haha. Also, I did the check on the installESD.dmg.

Since you are a developer, could I pm yo about some developing questions? Just how to get started? What you think is the best way.

worked great for me.

Just to clarify, and not go make people crazy. The .dmg found on torrents sites, it's exactly the same as apple will release. just download one with good sources and good coments.

If you are not familiarized with selecting a decent torrent; don't do it.

it will update like the MAS version.

And yes it's illegal. And if you plan to purchase it later, it's still illegal, cause you are not a developer. And still being illegal, it's easy to do and will work absolutely the same as the official version, it always did and it always will. apple put no tramps for pirates, anyways you bought their computer and you are going to be a free beta tester for them.

and still it's technically illegal, i think.

Nice, I like how you cut off the rest of my post that explained that when you can get it legit copy that cost under $30 it makes zero sense to torrent it as your main OS. ;)

How does that clarify anything? Linux Distros which you get for free can be obtained by torrenting. My question was - Does your recommendation of not installing an OS from torrents also extend to Linux distros obtained in this manner?

Bit of a straw man argument there. Torrents of Linux distros are seeded by their developers and their checksums are provided for reassurance.

Not really - he didn't make those conditions to his argument which I interpreted to be that torrents are inherently a greater risk from a security standpoint.

My point is if the checksum of the version floating around on torrents matches that of a copy obtained from Apple dev, it's highly unlikely issues will arise.

My point wasn't at all about downing torrents in general, it was just about stealing vs. paying. That's all.

I just did a clean install.

Safari is hugely improved, animations and scrolling across the system are much smoother. looking good so far.

Quick question - and I might not be able to ask this.

I am not a registered developer. IF I managed to obtain the GM of Mavericks can I upgrade to it from my current ML setup? (i.e. while retaining all my apps, documents, settings etc)

If I can do that can I legitimately upgrade to the release of Mavericks when it is released?

GM is the final version. At least it's the version they gonna ship new devices with and you will get all the updates up to next version of OS X.

Took the plunge. I just wanted to make sure my most used apps would be good to go. Downloaded from Usenet so not sure if it was full of junk, it did have a scene's splash image on the mounted image though.

Only had a couple hours to mess about with it. Love Finder tabs and the general polish of the thing. Everything ran sweet.

Time Machine'd back to 10.8.5 for now. Looking forward to the proper release :)

when I tried Run Installer.. I got this issues :(

Once you double click the install.dmg, another screen pops up waiting for you to click to start the actual installation. Take and drag that icon/application installer out of the box and on to your desktop and double click that icon for installation and it will not give you that warning/screen. :D

Edit: Someone beat me to it.

How long does it take to install once downloaded, also quick query, if I install the GM, will I get the regular version just through the app store if say a patch comes out?....Will I have to purchase again once installed?.

I guess installation times will vary depending on your system. On my MBPR it installed in like 20 +- a few minutes. I'm pretty sure you will have to pay for the version released in the MAS. My system came with ML, but it was an option to still buy it in the MAS. So I think it would be the same for those still using the GM during release date. You will however receive all the updates that that the final release receives if I'm not mistaken.

While I am an advocate of people paying for software they use regularly; I do not take issue with those obtaining it from 'other' sources in order to check if suits them. Where an application does not have an official trial, I have done so in the past; BUT I have paid for all the apps I use regularly (Photoshop, Aperture, CorelDraw! etc).

I have always paid for the OS X upgrade and encourage others to do the same. It's not a lot of money after all considering the investment in the Apple ecosystem that having a genuine machine to use it with entails.

From previous sales figures (10.7 and 10.8) I think the majority of users do actually pay for the legitimate OS X when it becomes available.

This is probably the reason the % of illegal copies in daily use for OS X is less than for Windows.

This is what I do also. I get the GM of whatever OSX version is latest, install it and then purchase it from the App Store when it is available. I also burn the installed DMG to DVD and install off that from the torrent site.

I am not asked to sign in or anything like that during installation and I have never had any issues using a GM from a torrent site as my actual OS. But now I am back with Windows and no longer use OSX but I just wanted to give my thoughts.

I don't have an empty external HDD but really want to install the update, would this be a very bad idea without a Time Machine backup?

If you have important documents and files on your Mac, that you can't afford to be without, I would wait, until such a time as you are able to properly backup, just in case something untoward were to happen.

If not, have at it.

So if I install this now, when updates come out, will I be forced to buy mavericks when releases are available through "update Mac"?

Well, the most important stuff is on Dropbox, would hate to lose all the other extra stuff, some pictures and files etc. but as long as it's not that risky I guess it's ok just going for it. Thanks for your answer!

Question: The 10.8.5 update has been waiting in the app store for a while now, but I never updated because I didn't want to risk any complications at the time.

If I install Mavericks GM will that update continue to sit in my App store or will it disappear after I do the Mavericks update? Or would I just be better off going to 10.8.5 before updating to Mavericks?
