Dealing with Apple's too stressful for me. I think I'm just going to not give a @#$% about what computer I'm using from now on.

MacBook (as opposed to iBook)? Come on. Changing from Powerbook to MacBook Pro was awful. This is just atrocious. For several reasons. And don't bitch about me bringing this up again, or I'll cut off your nose and fry it.

But I'm not going to mention my other reasons for being upset. In general, though, I'm wondering if there is a plan. It was sage of Apple to have been planning the Intel transition for five years, but did they have to propagandize and then counter-propagandize at every single turn, losing credibility at every turn? PPC is better -- no, now Intel is. Microsoft is Satan -- but now, you can install it next to OS X. Integrated graphics are horrible -- I mean, in the next boxes.

I'm not taking sides here -- I invested in a top-of-the-line Mactel, I support virtualization and can tolerate dual-booting, and I'm not a gamer and know ****-all about graphic cards. I'm just saying that I feel like the ship is being captained by a madman. As iGary might say, I just threw up a little bit in my mouth.

I love my iMac more than any computer I've ever had, put together. That may not sound like much, but I was crazy about my NeXTStation, my SGI Indy, even my Atari Mega ST 2, my SGI Indigos, my Sun SS10's and SS20's and my Ultra 10's (when they worked). I've had at last count over 45 computers in my life, about 7-8 iirc were Intel boxes. So this is really saying something. I love this machine.

And I'm not bitching simply because I don't like the direction of Apple's hardware or policy. I'm bitching because I don't see any promising direction at all. Sure, we will continue to use Apples, because we're insane (?).... but who would switch?

Maybe I lack Steve's vision. Maybe you all can enlighten me. Give me Steve's vision.

Because what I do have right now is a vision of Steve Jobs. I see him putting Twiggy drives in the Lisa, MO drives in the NeXT Cube, repainting an entire factory dozens of times, and so on.

Someone reassure me.

Unless you have shares in Apple, this isn't really something that should worry you. You are a consumer! Let THEM convince YOU! Another possibility would be to get away from computers for a while. Take up another hobby - something in the outdoors. A bit of time away from your computer, getting back to nature, makes you realise how silly all of this is!

Touché. But whether it's healthy or not, I do have an interest in what happens to Apple and with Apple's product lines. One reason is that I've never been able to get a damn thing done in Windows or Linux :p The only OS superior to OS X that I could imagine would be a total PalmOS running on my iMac. Point and click. A little hard to have dangerous viruses when every smidgen of the OS is in firmware.

This is not to say that I couldn't use Windows or Linux (or BSD, or even RISC-OS, for that matter) -- it's just that, for whatever reason, some kind of electronic feng shui, I'm not at peak efficiency when using anything else.

And I'm supposed to be pasty, deranged, and miserable. I'm a writer ;)

Seriously, though, I'm not really overwrought about this as I probably seem. Just a bit frustrated, confused, and wondering if my kids are going to be using Apples. You know? If I seem suicidal, you should have seen me the time I bought skim milk instead of 2% ;)

Haha good response :) Stay away from the skim... unless it's iSkim of course... ;)

Is anyone expecting an announcement this tuesday (tomorrow) ? or is it too soon ? ThinkSecret says 30 to 60 days, whereas Appleinsider's guess is late April. I don't know which one gives more accurate information.

For me, I expect to see some sun tomorrow morning and 40% chance of thunderstorms in the afternoon. Or so suggests weather.com.

pay day

I expect a paycheck tomorrow. and a 50% of rain and a high of 56 F degree. more house hunting leads and yes Apple stock to hit an all time high of ~$86 per share and Dell to spin off Alienware, because even designers at Dell is repulse by the ugly design of Alienware computer.

-Cinch

sorry for the run-on sentence

Nope...forget it.

why you say that? He said no, but to wait to buy til wed. So could be an announcment tomorrow. Just for order, unless you know otherwise.

Updated Graphical Predictions for Apple Notebook Range in May/June

Just messin' around with Excel, thought I'd nicely colour code my predictions for this summer and add my two pence into the speculative debate:cool:

i'm looking exactly for a laptop you made up in that picture, the 1499$ version. Mobility but with enough power!

Same here, if i could sell my iBook for even £400-450 I would have a good £1k to spend on a laptop and with edu discount the £1099 would be £939. Add another 1GB RAM to make it 1.5GB and thats 1k spent well for me this summer!

I want the $1499 MacBook that you put in that picture. I definetaly want it. How on earth can they make a lineup of laptops without at least the top of the line one having a real video card? I'm sure they will have at least the X1300 in it.

Compare with Dell...

Or carbon fibre... ahhh

Any color but white. I would like to see a return to:

Powerbook 1xx Grey.
Powerbook "Pismo" Black.

iMac translucent clear, smoke, etc.

Titanium

Aluminum.

I took my first look today at the MacBook Pro. It gave off a great deal of heat and I thought it was too large.

For everyone on this board who is concerned at the price points of the new MacBook along with the concern that the $999 price point will be lost, you need to take a look at the specs on the new Dell Latitiude D820. the specs are nearly identical to the the proposed specs for the new MacBooks.

Starting Price is $899 for a 1.66 GHz Dual Core with Shared Main/Video memory system and $1215 for a 1 GB system. Yes I know the $899 price is for a CDROM version, but the BTO options have fairly low prices for the components like DVD R/W, etc.

If you look at the dimensions of the 14" screen, it has a diagonal dimension of 13.3".

Either way, I would not be surpised if the motherboard/processor/chipset is very similar to the one that Apple will be offering in the MacBook.

Low price is possible.

and Expresscard/54.

So your complaints are:

  1. Name change to MacBook Pro. Yeah, it sucks, but it's just a name. Maybe it will work out, anyway.
  2. Switch to Intel while saying PPC is better before. I won't pretend to know about processors, but that was before the new Intel processors were announced/released. (Yonah, Merom, etc.)
  3. Same thing with Microsoft. I don't think Apple has actually said anything negative about Microsoft especially. They've always advertised MS Office:Mac and have a page about Virtual PC, I think. It doesn't seem to me like they're coming out of left field by allowing dual boot.
  4. Integrated graphics on iBooks that haven't been announced yet. I'm not sure iBooks are for people who even know/care about integrated graphics, and besides they are trying to keep the price down. They need an entry level notebook, right? If you want dedicated graphics you buy a MacBook Pro.

The top of the line MacBook WILL have dedicated graphics. I SWEAR IT. It can't be any other way. I am willing to give each and every member of this site $100,000 if none of the MacBook's come with dedicated graphics. That's how confident I am.

You won't be getting any money from me, because the best macbook will have a video card. Steve Jobs may be a moron, but he's not an idiot.
