This post is right on the money. The more I think about it, the more I fail to see the interest of an unified line...

Unless Macbook is simply the new iBook name (but then... MacPod? hm...)

MacBook = iBook
MacBook Duo = PowerBook

As I said in a previous post, other differences are likely to include GPU/VRAM, max RAM, HD speed/size and screen resolution. Maybe even ports.

They may even keep the iBook/PowerBook names (which are already known) but still go with the "unified design" idea. It lowers design and manufacturing costs while still keeping the two lines completely distinct (in look and features).

Hopefully we still get a 10.5 Leopard preview...

Won't happen. there is too much other stuff to demo and frankly you aren't going to hear talks of Leopard until WWDC...then Apple Expo...then MW next year with a launch shortly afterwards. I'm perfectly happy to see Apple take their time with Leopard considering the state Tiger was in when it was released.

But the rumor is: 15" intel Macbook - order tomorrow, ships Feb (thinner, dual core)

media center

I still think there is going to be some type of media center, frontrow 2.0, device announced. And/or, the mini upgraded to handle Frontrow.

As long as Apple blows Vista completely out of the water, Im happy to wait.

This whole site must put Steve on such a powertrip.

That all being said, the rumor of iLife, a new 15" Laptop, and some other goodies, while disappointing compared to what we have heard in the last 72 hours, is most realistic.

And I wouldnt get caught up in "macbook" symantecs; it will probably be a 15" powerbook. The 12" and 17" stick around for a while for those who really need PPC, and the 15" moves on, giving developers a production model to tweak on.

And it ships today (4 weeks)

Umm dude its out now. The new 160GB laptop drives are using it.

Yes, but the ultra-capacity drives that we were talking about are not out yet, are they?

The iPod needs an update so you can see the navigation menus on your TV, instead of just photos and cover art.

iLife 06. It doesn't take a crystal ball to work that one out!

Rapturous applause from the audience as Steve introduces the MacBook Duo. Now as thin as a pencil!

Here's to the Crazy Ones

They could merge both iBook and Powerbook lines into MacBooks, with different options and sizes (dual/single core Yonah, 12'',13.3'', 15' and 17'', and different specs for the various configurations). To make up for the lack of iBooks, these MacBooks should be affordable, say the lowest configuration starting at about 1000-1200$. Otherwise Apple looses a bit portion of the Market.
The Centrino Duo (Yonah) processors are good enough to deliver a more affordable and equally powerful laptop such as the Powerbook.

The cool thing about this is now the Mac laptops will be faster then their desktops!!! I wonder if that has ever happened in the history of Apple or any other computer maker.

true but I thought your point was that the tech wasn't out and my point was that it is "out there" now. sorry, Too early.

I wouldn't bet on it. the G5 still easily keeps up with the Jones's.

Don't tease me like that!

4 GB nano jumps up to 2-4 day delivery!!

Is the 4 GB nano bumping to 6 or 8 GB?

The two iBooks and three PowerBooks in the Apple Store all still say "Ships: Within 24 hours." I'm guessing that either means (1) refreshes of whatever we're getting in the same basic configuration, (2) a reconfigured Macbook line will have five models, or (3) anything announced today will NOT be immediately available.

The three Mac minis and both iMacs available immediately.

All three displays available immediately.

The 512 MB shuffle says immediately available, but the 1 GB still says 1-2 days. The smaller nano and both regular iPods are immediately available.

I don't believe that we'll only get a 15" MacBook.

I'm still betting on a 13" iBook... Please? ;)

Well, if we're betting, I'll keep betting on my PalmBook (~7in widescreen, no optical drive, no trackpad - uses touchscreen instead of mouse, one USB 2.0, one FireWire400, 1/8" stereo audio out, S-Video out (no VGA/DVI/miniDVI output)).

All of the retailers are running out of the 1GB Shuffle. That must mean a replacement of some kind is due today. Otherwise Apple are losing $$$ for no reason.

Yes, this is odd. Prior to an Apple announcement there is always a change in the delivery time.... uhmm.....
The nano bump might be the radio FM receiver, but it makes no sense that it's only in the Nano.
Apple might change all the delivery times just after the Keynote to prevent people like us gossiping.. ;)

People at Apple are probably having so much fun reading these forums... ;)

Have you noticed that Apple currently do not offer an inline remote control for the 5G iPods?

I'm not including using the Apple Remote when the iPod is in its dock.

Last year was the "year of HD".

Despite the fact that still only two Apple machines can even play back HD video reasonably well, including none of the portables and also not including the switcher-tempting Mini? Wow, you must have been deep inside the RDF when Steve said it. :D

Oh, not to mention that video content is now available on iTMS, but it's not even SD resolution, much less HD.

I can't take this. Was hoping to sleep in and wake up right AT noon for the keynote but ofcourse I couldn't.

Not sure if I like the merged laptop idea. This may sound elitist but I don't want to be lumped in with the college crowd buying iBooks. I don't mind paying premium money for the pleasure, and ego, of having a POWERbook that is 17" big.

Is this petty? Sure. But as Apple users we're allready paying a premium above the el cheap plastic boxes in the PC world and this next step isn't that irrational.

From a business/brand management perspective, Apple would be making a huge mistake to move away from the established brand image and cache the Powerbook name connotates. Steve has alwaus been a marketeer first and I doubt he would do this.

Then again, who the hell knows ... I would like, however, at least the casings to be different in the low power laptops so that when I open up my 'powerboook', people NKOW it is better/faster/cooler than a bare to the bones iBook.

2 hours .. we'll soon find out.

Geeze guys, no wonder we are always dissappointed when the actual updates come. Dont you think you are setting the bar a little too high there buddy? ;)
