Despite the fact that still only two Apple machines can even play back HD video reasonably well, including none of the portables and also not including the switcher-tempting Mini? Wow, you must have been deep inside the RDF when Steve said it. :D

Oh, not to mention that video content is now available on iTMS, but it's not even SD resolution, much less HD.

But iTMS sells mainly for iPods, not for Cinema Displays... why would you want SD or HD quality in an iPod?
Of course, it would be nice if HD-resolution videos where available for download, but its bigger size would make them more expensive. Also, they wouldn't fit in an iPod.

Well, if we're betting, I'll keep betting on my PalmBook (~7in widescreen, no optical drive, no trackpad - uses touchscreen instead of mouse, one USB 2.0, one FireWire400, 1/8" stereo audio out, S-Video out (no VGA/DVI/miniDVI output)).

Yes! YES! I want one, too.

But might this little model be the Firewire-less notebook that's been rumored?

Man I feel like such a geek...

I feel like we're all members of a cult. I still have fond memories of my 'recruitment', upon seeing my mate with a G4 iMac. I was blown away. Having 'recruited' three more Mac users, I just smile everytime they tell me how much they enjoy the Mac experience. The other day when I was using Safari, then jumping into Dashboard to do an imdb.com search and a quick converter with the currency, then bam back hitting the opposite end of my screen and letting expose do it's thing so I'm on iTunes putting on a different song, and just watching all my windows slide around my lil' 12". Was an absolute beauty to watch.

Windows users have no idea how crap they have it, and after today the Mac experience will have elevated once more.

Let it rip Steve!

Surely he means a MacTel iBook, not an Intel MacBook!
Can't wait until tonight... only another 2 hours until the keynote. This MacWorld's gonna be good.

Lovin' my Apple IIgs, Apple IIe, Mac 512k, Mac Plus --> iBook G3 500

Dreams ...

Now that we've seemed to have deviated from predictions to dreams .....

I want a T-Book (i call it) ... or a Tablet PowerBook ... using Apple's InkWell Technology ....

YES!!

Consistency

Right now it's iBook/PowerBook, iMac/Power Mac and then there's Mac mini. Not very consistent. While iPod remains simply iPod brand across the line: iPod, iPod mini, iPod nano and iPod shuffle.

iBook and PowerBook are good brand names, but Mac is better. So MacBook and MacBook pro seems a good line. (The pro designation doesn't have to be written on the housing, as is also not done with the iPod lines.)

When it comes down to desktops, the problem begins. We have the great iMac brand. But then there is Apple's Mac mini and Power Mac. Can we have iMac, iMac mini, and iMac pro? No, because iMac stand for all-in-one, unless one is willing to transform the iMac brand. We have to go back to basic to get consistency. There would simply be a Mac (which is the iMac), then there's the Mac mini, and the Mac pro (current Power Mac). But plain Mac sounds empty, I suppose.

I do believe that what makes the iPod brand strong is the consistency across the line.

So that I can play WoW sitting on my sofa and using a stylus to control it, and surfing at the same time... I like.

I would be happy to see any new laptop release along as it is more than a speed bump...I look forward to seeing some sort of new form factor.

I agree that there could be color choices especially if this is the new iBook line. From what I gather the new black iPods and iPod Nanos are rather popular. It will be interesting to see, and hopefully we will see something today. :D

No, the iBook and PowerBook lines *will* merge--really, they almost have already.

BUT, that's not the end of the story... Apple is just making room in the product line for something else. I predict that the iBook and Powerbook lines merge starting in January ((Solo, Dual) X (13", 15", 17")), and by mid-year Apple releases something mindblowingly cool in the the portable market.

It will really be the new consumer line, but a high-end, premium one. Sort of the iPod of the notebook world, although I expect a radical new design. From Apple's persepctive, the problem with the iBook line is that it has become a low end line. The pressure is on to keep lowering it's price--not really Apple's business. They want to be selling consumers $2000 really cool premium, feature-laden laptops, not $1000 mid-to-low-level laptops.

BTW, I kind of like MacBook--it's got a sort of retro-cool.

Yeah it does I think at this point we know its gonna be a laptop with a yonah. Time to go find things around the house to sell on ebay. :)

Heh, I haven't finished reading the thread yet, but that was my first thought when the rumors about a 13" widscreen dual Intel cored iBook came up... sadly, I have done remarkably poor at trying to gather any funds, so I hope the rumors about a significant price drop are true as well! Ok off the read the other 150+ posts...

What on earth is a MacBook?! Something inbetween a PB and an iB??? Can't wait to see, Kevin's usually spot-on!

Look at the ship times for iBook G4s and PowerBook G4s: 24 hours. Doesn't sound right if one of the lines is going away.

MacBook will be a THIRD laptop line: with Intel processors. Eventually it will replace one of the two lines (iBook or PowerBook), but until a second line of Intel laptops is released, all three will be sold simultaneously.

I propose

Or Apple can do the lines like this:

iPod
iPod nano
iPod shuffle
iPod whatever

iMac
Mac mini
Mac pro
Mac whatever (HDTV, etc)

MacBook
MacBook mini
MacBook pro

iMac would be the exception (instead of simply Mac) because when we talk about Mac, we also talk about the Mac platform.

No offense but if the "Macbook" has the dual Yonah it will blow away the Powerbook and iBook.

Ok I’ve finally have to say something, why does everyone think its going to be the laptops (ibook, or pb) or even the mini. Why replace a 32bit chip with another 32bit chip? Ok it’s faster. Why not wait until summer for Intels 64bit Merom chips for laptops after all isn’t the G5 a 64bit chip, and doesn’t his fit remarkably well with what Apple say about the first Intel Macs some time in the summer.

Ok I've said it now; I’ll go back in my box.
