Thankfully, it can be restored and cleaned up. Inconvenient like mad, but fixable.

NOTES
What's happening?
The OTA update version might be corrupted. The update will download completely, verify prior to install, go into the Apple update screen, then crash into the "Plug into iTunes" screen. The update bar went as far as about 75% - 80%.

Who is affected?
So far, only iPad Pros, iPhone 6S / S+ and iPhone SEs have complained of corrupt installs. All of those who have complained used OTA updates, so it may affect more.

What do I do?
1.) DO NOT USE OTA UPDATES - it's the most common culprit in the bunch. Avoid it like the plague.
2.) IF YOU ARE UPDATING, USE USB + iTUNES. Those who have been successful have used the iTunes download. Slower, but working.
3.) IF YOU ARE BRICKED - Plug into iTunes and use "Update" to clear out your problem. You don't need to do a full restore, thankfully. I've done a simple update and everything worked swimmingly.

Should be common knowledge to all Apple i users anyhow. :p

The new iOS 10 update, released today, appears to be causing problems for some iPad and iPhone owners who are installing it over-the-air. ...

No problem here. Running iOS 10.0.1 on iPad Pro (2015), iPhone 6, iPhone 6S Plus.
OTA for every beta of 10.0.x
Not sure if 10.0.1 is the release that's causing the issue though. :-(

If it can be restored, it's obviously NOT "bricked."

Yup, you're right that the term "bricked" being overused here, but it is a temporary state of being bricked in that the device can not be used until reset/restored. The term originally meant that the device is in a completely unusable and unfixable state. In this case, iOS devices are fixable. I hope people backed up before trying to update.

Doh! My 6s just did the same thing.
I thought for sure it'd be fine given the amount of public beta out there. Good thing I made a backup before I started... but it's at home. :(

Jeezus...this is the last thing Apple needs right now. WTF is going on in Cupertino---didn't the software update problems going back to 8.0 teach them anything?

Glad I'm running the GM version of the public beta updated last week.

Both my 6s and 12.9 in iPad Pro both went into recovery mode trying to OTA update to iOS 10.

My 6s Plus got bricked as part of the update. When I connected to iTunes it wants to "upgrade" to iOS 9.2.5, which I assume will fail. It looks like I'll need to do a restore.

I really wish Apple would test their releases.

I know the OTA option is available, but why would you try it knowing the risk and knowing that a better option is available? Also, I sure hope all of you are backing up your devices before trying to install..

Step 1: Plug in device
Step 2: Back up to iTunes
Step 3: While still connected to iTunes, check for updates
Step 4: Install

Thankfully, it can be restored and cleaned up. Inconvenient like mad, but fixable.

I did my update OTA on my iPhone 6s and did not have any issues...happily running iOS 10.01....

I was able to do an iTunes update, rather than a restore on my 6S+, after the OTA failed.

All my apps and data were still there, so I didn't need to restore, but I was in panic mode for a while.

OTA update worked fine on my iPad Air though.

WTF is going on with Apple's quality control in their software? Ever since iOS 7, it has really gone down the toilet (7.0 was a disaster on iPads). You'd think with the public beta program, things would go more smoothly. But the iOS 9.3 launch was also plagued by bugs. Sad to see things slide so badly in the last few years.

The new iOS 10 update, released today, appears to be causing problems for some iPad and iPhone owners who are installing it over-the-air. On the MacRumors forums, we're seeing multiple reports from users who have attempted to install iOS 10 and have had their devices put into recovery mode, requiring a restore.

It does not seem to be limited to a single device, but most reports from iPad owners are coming from those who have the 9.7-inch iPad Pro, which has had trouble with new software releases in the past. Multiple iPhone models also appear to be affected. From MacRumors forum member bit_bucket: Users who have their iOS 10 devices bricked by the update will need to do an iTunes restore, which will erase all data. Here's the message users are receiving:In light of the installation issues some users are facing, those who are concerned about their devices being sent into recovery mode and bricked should hold off on downloading the iOS 10 update for the time being until more information can be uncovered. A backup before installing is also recommended.

Well iTunes installed iOS 10 but now it just hangs on "updating iCloud settings". I've tried restarting the phone about 5 times to no avail
