What feature do you "think" you lost? Actually We gained a feature. One I and many other use every day. Maybe you'd prefer Android. Best of luck.
This "feature" (temporarily disable wifi or bluetooth) could be present somewhere in settings. However, the quick-access on/off should be the simple on/off.

BTW, most commenters here, who are calling the present behavior a feature, should actually make themselves acquainted with the wi-fi assist feature, which exists since iOS 9, and does exactly what they claim this "new feature" is bringing them.

Apple has done lots of research around this, which have resulted in the change of function. What they found is that the VAST MAJORITY of users just want to disconnect from the current wifi, not turn it off completely.

Please understand this change was made based on the usage of most users. This may not reflect your own usage but sadly, changes are made to help the majority of users, not the minority.

And you claim this based on what?

Even if Apple indeed analyzed usage data, they most probably have no way of knowing that a user actually wanted to do something else than what he actually did.

Moreover, the usage data Apple could use, would not contain the usage data from the *sane* users, who naturally disable any usage-data sharing with Apple or anyone else.

There was probably a meeting to have both functionality using 3D Touch so in typical way, started development and told the team working on the lock screen to do the same with the flash light and camera .

Time running out and a meeting later, someone told them it was stupid and they did a bandaid. The QA dept probably got vague requirements and didn’t bring up the discrepancy and the software was released into production.

They plan on waiting for people to tell them it’s not good, because Apple generally doesn’t want to pay for thinking like a human thinks because that hurts the bottom line to tell try to coordinate something that makes sense.

Because there is NOTHING intutive about a button that, when tapped, changes color, gives no other feedback .....oh and permanently disables the core function of your device.

To most non-savvy users, that is a serious problem. This new way of doing is not about people who know what the toggle does. Pat yourself on the back for being so smart.

I suggest a master switch should exist in settings, where a user could chose between a non-technical-user and a technical-user mode, for both iOS and macOS (with the non-technical-user mode as the default). Apparently, there are people who have no clue what they are doing technology-wise, and it's OK if Apple makes choices for them. Just don't force the naive Apple decisions on people who know very well what they want/need.

You enjoy your needlessly drained battery & your body saturated in antenna radiation for no reason?
I think it’s been shown back even on early iPhones and any smartphones in general, that leaving WiFi and Bluetooth on on standby don’t reduce battery that significantly.

Why not long press for the option to turn it off completely?...

Yet another prime example how 3D Touch is underutilized. It would make so much sense.

I'm among those who miss the true-off function of the toggles, but after reading this thread I kinda see the use of the new function, too.

Why not have the best of both worlds?

Which has been proved to not save battery...

How so? I'm on a battery-weak 5S and I constantly turn off wifi when on the road and battery life is noticeably improved.

While I'd be more than happy to have some sort of "developer" or "advanced" options available behind some switch, the vast majority of Apple's typical users are those who wouldn't even know about them and who would be better kept out of them if they stumbled upon them. As is it is fairly naturally in basically any business, Apple caters to their main demographic, which are those typical users basically.

That is definitely one kind of an improvement that they could do and hopefully will do.

I have learned that if you need a pop up to explain something maybe its time to actually fix the root of a problem

Same goes for Reachability. But that's slightly off-topic in this thread.

iOS used to be so intuitive that even my 80-years old grandpa was able to use it without much explanation. Not so anymore...

For the battery reduction part, I think most people don't understand things like propagation, masking, and the EME. If a device, which listens for a signal to connect to, is constantly being moved in and out of range of said signal it will be constantly looking for it versus the device being in a spectrum friendly environment where there's no loss in reception and it doesn't have to always actively seek out the signal. I hope I didn't oversimplify that and confuse people.

You mention Steve Jobs and how his ideals seem to play a role in Apple's current market strategy, yet forget that he didn't want the pencil to ever be developed and sold. Apple will change it's marketing strategy and what is perceived as the public desire as it sees fit.

I don't understand. I have 11.1.1 on an iPhone 6. Every night I go to sleep and disable Wifi and BT. I wake up definitely later than 5 AM and my wifi is still "disabled". It never reconnected, even with the previous versions of iOS.

Am I missing something?

Which btw is a privacy concern and a huge security risk for the consumer. All the more reason to always turn off wifi when you are on the road. For Apple as the privacy company it should be a top priority that there is always a way to quickly and entirely turn of wifi and bluetooth. By hiding the ability to turn of wifi and bluetooth deep in the seetings Apple is putting their customers irresponsibly and so it appears with full intention at risk.

Control... All i see is control.

Why not? That’s implicit in the “advanced” part.
[doublepost=1510612969][/doublepost]
Bingo

You say "advanced" .... I say "only method" There is more than one way because Apple gives everyone a convenient Control Center., but are forcing users by having direct control back to this "one way" by adjusting what is can do.

Possibly a good thing, but i would have felt better if there was an option "Turn off completely"

Sooner or later people have to be willing to give up certain privacies if they want to have that enhanced geo-locating capability, same can be said with any technological advancement. Look at social media, before people would keep to their own circles with gossip, now we're literally reading tweets when someone starts a cycle or takes a poop.

There was a time before the control panel existed where we had to go in and turn on/off these functions, it can be relearned. They didn't hide anything, it's where it's always been, in the settings.

Apple likely made the change to Control Center in iOS 11 for a better overall user experience, as some iPhone and iPad owners might not realize the impact that turning Wi-Fi and Bluetooth off can have when it comes to iOS features like GPS directions, Continuity, and more.

That's Apple (?) talking down to costumers like they are stupid, ignorant children (or pets) and they know better. Apple just keeps getting worse and worse, so far up their ***..

Talk about BS. When I want WiFi OFF I want it OFF... COMPLETELY! Why dumb down everything to the lowest user.

Apple 'means' well.. and that's all the important.

It's still this whole convenient method,, than later u remove features.... of that same convenience, to now make it 'non convenient'

Classic Apple arrogance. Our devices are so important that we're going to ignore all the emission regulations out there, and make it hard to disable the radios. And we're so right that we're going to double-down on this bad design choice and post a warning admitting to our bad behavior.

How long until the FAA files a complaint against Apple for encouraging their users to violate regulations? Airplane mode means that ALL radios are DISABLED for takeoff and landing.

But then again this is the company that ignores hands-free and distracted driving laws and wants you to hold up and look at your phone to unlock it while driving.

We desperately need someone with common sense and a great big 2x4 to smack the design team.

No, it’s not. Apple values privacy and masks annonymizes your MAC address os you shouldn’t worry about it.

It's pretty much how things have always been with iOS--it's how Apple sees things should be. Nothing exactly new or surprising or different than what it's been like for years and years now. And for the vast majority of their typical user base it works out just fine.

Yep, and would also like to know how many users manually go into settings to turn off the radios when on airplanes, in hospitals, in defense or other sensitive buildings, etc.

Off means off. Airplane mode means airplane mode (i.e. FAA compliant).

Omg, how much ignorance. WiFi and Bluetooth. Are. Not. Prohibited anymore.
For how many years will we still live o what those urban myths like WiFi influence airplanes FFS? Cellular connection is th eonky thing that should be disabled by Airplane Mode. Nothing else. Period.

Do you know Android treats WiFi and Bluetooth the same way as iOS 11... for years now?

Hold on, airplane mode still disables radios. And Apple added driving mode in iOS 11 specifically to deal with distracted driving. Some interesting spin there.

Look, airplanes. Are. Not. Influenced. By. WiFi and Bluetooth. Welcome to the 21st century and the age of reason, medieval folks. You’d better believe in fairies and Santa Claus as well.
