Can't they just add an option for a classic control panel so users can change to the style and function they want instead of this stupid over engineered garbage?
Omg, how much ignorance. WiFi and Bluetooth. Are. Not. Prohibited anymore.
For how many years will we still live o what those urban myths like WiFi influence airplanes FFS? Cellular connection is th eonky thing that should be disabled by Airplane Mode. Nothing else. Period.

Do you know Android treats WiFi and Bluetooth the same way as iOS 11... for years now?
Hold on, airplane mode still disables radios. And Apple added driving mode in iOS 11 specifically to deal with distracted driving. Some interesting spin there.

Nothing in this thread has to do with airplane mode.
Million mile flier here. I'm afraid you're wrong. In the US, on most airlines, during takeoff and landing all radios need to be disabled. In many other countries, and even on certain aircraft, they have to remain off during the entire flight. As they must be around medical equipment, in sensitive facilities, and so forth.
Note that I'm not arguing it's a valid policy, just that it is the policy. Around some medical equipment, it's absolutely a valid one.
This is completely counter intuitive behavior. off means off.

Airplane mode no longer disables bluetooth and wifi - it reverts to the previous state, and is related to the same design flaw - Apple is now deciding that off doesn't mean off because their devices are in a special privileged class. They also think that they know better and turn the radios back on at some apple-specified time.
The latter causes many issues, including around sensitive equipment (medical), and on airlines around the world that do not allow any radio transmission use during flight at all.
Driving mode might as well just be powering off the phone. Right now I can, without looking, unlock my phone and use voice commands to control it (e.g. to change destination in maps). With FaceID, you have to look at the phone to do so - Hey Siri is both insecure and unreliable, which is why it's disabled on my devices.
This is just stupid design.
Not really intuitive if OFF does not actually mean OFF.Why keep it an intuitive on/off when you can add a pop up explaining it?![]()
Not really intuitive if OFF does not actually mean OFF.
Airplane mode remembers the previous state of Bluetooth and WiFi, but that's not related to the disconnect vs. off state for Bluetooth and WiFi. Once in airplane mode if you don't want your previous state you can simply tap on WiFi and/or Bluetooth and turn them off (as in actually off)--this part still works the same as before when it comes to airplane mode.Million mile flier here. In many other countries, and even on certain aircraft, they have to remain off during the entire flight (I was on one recently that required they be completely powered off and stowed). Yep, and would also like to know how many users manually go into settings to turn off the radios when on airplanes, in hospitals, in defense or other sensitive buildings, etc.
Off means off. Airplane mode means airplane mode (i.e. FAA compliant).
No, it’s not. Apple values privacy and masks annonymizes your MAC address os you shouldn’t worry about it.
I understand what they’re trying to do, but I believe it’s unnecessary.
Off should be off, on should be on.
Keep it simple stupid.
Technically MacRumors is in violation of the Apple Developer agreement by disclosing this information. This opens them to legal action from Apple. Journalistic freedom doesn't apply here.
because idiots were complaining when it came out and will still complain about the pop upWhy keep it an intuitive on/off when you can add a pop up explaining it?![]()
And you claim this based on what?
Even if Apple indeed analyzed usage data, they most probably have no way of knowing that a user actually wanted to do something else than what he actually did.
Moreover, the usage data Apple could use, would not contain the usage data from the *sane* users, who naturally disable any usage-data sharing with Apple or anyone else.
You may be a million flyer, but the rules have changed and Airlines now define according to their own rules, it’s not necessary to disable WiFi and Bluetooth any longer by government instructions as far as I am aware.Million mile flier here. Pretty sure there was a manual (online or otherwise) even back when the original iPhone came out.Remember when Apple just worked and was so intuitive nobody needed clunky instructions?
If you change your location significantly, it will turn back on.Well this mode is still glitchy. I turned my wifi off.. it said it wouldn't turn back on till tomorrow for my current network. Drove to the store... came back about an hour later. Looked at my phone, wifi turned back on. So I'm wondering if it means it wouldn't auto connect again if I stayed within the range of the wifi and didn't leave it? Because again, soon as I came back.. reconnected. I've now attempted this 3 times, 7+, 8+ and X. All have the same issue. 2 are fresh installs of Beta 3, 1 was just an upgrade. Reported as usual.
The new way is much better. When I get to my car for example at work, it has a very weak connection to wifi. I don't want to turn off wifi, I want to just disconnect from work. The old way I would forget to turn wifi back on.
So you tend to chill around in a desert? You are really reaching here...So you’re saying you can use WiFi to find your location in the middle of the desert? Then why even provide a GPS on the iPhone? lol
You NEED the GPS for location, unless you stay at home all day
To be fair. These buttons don’t even have labels. For all you know, it could have been a self-destruct buttonI understand what they’re trying to do, but I believe it’s unnecessary.
Off should be off, on should be on.

Agreed. Why not long press for the option to turn it off completely?...
Not really though. You may save 3% of battery life from turning off WiFi, but you essentially lost 17% of battery life riding on 4G LTE and GPSThey are turned off to SAVE BATTERY DURPA-DURRRR Apple!
I want my OFF toggles back. I understand how to manage my antennas I don't need to be antenna coddled by Apple's OS.
We should be able to swap the toggles out or HOLD on the WiFi Bluetooth to switch them OFF!
So STUPID.
This "feature" (temporarily disable wifi or bluetooth) could be present somewhere in settings. However, the quick-access on/off should be the simple on/off.
Why keep it an intuitive on/off when you can add a pop up explaining it?![]()
Priceless point in Apple UI history.... when you have to have a dialog explaining why the UI won't do what you think it will do. LOL!
The good news... now that they've made Control Center hard to get to on the new iPhone X... they've made it much less useful, so you won't need to go there. Back to Unlock -> Settings -> WiFi -> Off/On.![]()
