I know you’re enthusiastic about the iPhone X, but dayummm! ;)

For me, I’m thinking: This is a tablet, not a phone. There’s a bit of a difference in how we grip them and position them for use. I admit to having a hard time seeing myself comfortable with an iPad that looks somewhat like a larger version of the X. I definitely would not want the notch on a tablet. I’d want a nice even rectangle.

I’m not entirely sure Face ID would always be the most convenient method to unlock a tablet, in all circumstances so I’m hoping there will be enough room to keep Touch ID in there, too, though I’m not holding my breath.

Gesture based interactions would be good for most of us, but looking at how my in-laws use their iPads, I do still think they could cause difficulties for the elderly and young people with problems with manual dexterity, so I hope there are accessibility settings to help.

Oh well, Apple is clearly on a path with a commitment to a particular vision and won’t be taking my input, so my opinions are all moot. It’s fun to discuss, though.

I hope my Mini 4 lasts me a good number of years more. I have a 9.5” IPad Pro but still find it too large and unwieldy for most of my uses. I stick to it for art.

My OCD needs my iPad to match my X haha. I don't mind the bezel thing as I usually have my iPad propped up in the smart keyboard or I hold it on the sides with my one hand on the back. I agree the notch may be a bit strange on a device that is primarily used in landscape, but I think they will stick with a consistent look. The gestures are awesome and people will likely need to adapt. People on these forums are worse than most kids and elderly that I know, they'll be fine.

Sorry, Baymowe. You were already second...by one comment. ;)
Yeah, then I agree with you. A no bezel tablet isn't as necessary or practical on a large screen device you can't really hold with one hand. We'll see how they design it, but I don't think they are as starved for space and even style on a tablet. Phones are more stylish because you carry them everywhere. Tablets are much more purpose oriented.

Apple, please add a huge ugly notch. Pissing off the mac rumors crowd would be so worth it.

A bezel-less 9-inch iPad mini with Face ID and Pencil support is my dream.

I second (and third, and fourth, and fifth) the hopes for another round of iPad Mini.

I was going to question scaling all the way up to 9", thinking only a "trim the bezels" in the existing one would be enough. But then I diagonally measured the existing one and realized that it would have a 9" screen if those bezels were basically reduced to about X-like sizes.

I'm sure, someone is going to push back with the rumored X+ form factor rumor, but that would still be a substantially different size head-to-head.

I sixth the want for a new Mini.

While I don’t mind the notch on my X at all, to be honest I like it. It’s a personal preference and you’re welcome not to like it, that’s your preference.
However I much prefer that they took advantage of a little extra screen space for the clock and so on. Rather than a black bar that does nothing but take up space. So if there’s a notch on the new iPads, I don’t mind. Doubt I’ll be upgrading for a couple of years anyway.

Anyway, that aside, I think there could be ample room on an iPads bezel for there not to be a notch.

What I wonder though, is if they’ll put one there anyway. It may be that the notch is the new Home Button. The distinguishing mark that instantly shows to everyone that it’s an Apple device.
They do like to have their brands advertised to everyone around you after all. Apparently the big logo on the back just isn’t enough.

How come?

Because It's just like the 'moto 360' . Amazing watch, but could never 'not see' the flat tire. Same thing with the apple 'notch' Extremely ugly design choice even though rest of the phone is gorgeously done, again just like the moto 360.

And not to mention that they didn't solve anything or improved anything with 'face ID' For the average consumer touch ID was perfect, didn't need any 'improvement' especially if that 'improvement' came with a design downgrade.

Face ID is to nice to use. I miss it when I sit down with my iPad or at my iMac.

I couldn't agree more. Especially on the Mac. I assume the next Macs and MacPro will have it integrated.
One thing I miss on the iPad is the iPhone X interface. It's quicker and makes a lot more sense.
If the next 12.9 iPad comes out with Face ID, slimmer bezel, new interface and higher resolution I'll struggle to stay away.

Okay, just curious. Most people who have the X don't even notice it after a few minutes. Face ID has been better than Touch ID for me, the attention aware features and the auto fill for passwords are great. I suppose you can hold onto the 8 for a few years.

I was watching one of the tv medical shows and they were using a tablet with one of those circle holders (on the tablet back) that are a current craze to put on the back of an iPhone. The circle holder on the tablet looked slightly bigger than the small ones for the phone. So maybe that’s an option if the iPad bezels disappear or are made too small to use to hold.

my ipad pro 1st gen is still good. Maybe i'll pick one up...who knows. That swipe up gesture would be nice.

Serious question, i love my home button, touch ID or Not on my ipad pro 12.9. Anyone with an X now use to the face there is no more home button? How was the adjustment to it? I am using a note 8 now but have an Iphone 8 as well, i picked it over the X because my hands on with it was not to impressive. Plus the crappy intel modem is horrible and the Note 8 gets service where the 8 cant. Anyhow Apple has the tablet market cornered. Just not sure if i can see ridding the home button in favor of gestures.

The iPad is already as much if not more than a laptop equivalent with less functionality... adding face ID and the possibility of a OLED display... How much will this cost I wonder...

Apple is in such a strange transitional period, products are all over the place.

The macbook was released over 2 years ago yet you still cant plug an iphone into it without an adapter... IOS has still not got advanced enough for any real work passed word processing... yet costs more than an entry level mac laptop. The macbook pro line starts with a 13 which is about as far from pro as it gets and a price tag which is where a pro machine should be.

The whole company needs a shake.

Unless they can figure out multiple orientations with FaceID, it would be ridiculous to deal with that handicap on such a big device. I am all for an iPad with a vast lcd, though.

It will be interesting to see how this would go over. An iPad almost seems perfect for an under- display TouchID application, but we all know when a flagship model gets new authentication technology, it cascades into other products quickly.
Willing to bet they won’t put this in until it will be able to do multi angle. Most the time I use my iPad in landscape.

LOL !!! Apple running out of ideas as usual.. If it is as buggy as my iPhone X then I'll pass. Come on .. 10 years later you don't know what to do to the iPad or iPhone anymore.

Apple is planning to release a next-generation iPad Pro this year with slim bezels and Face ID, like the iPhone X, according to Mark Gurman at Bloomberg News, and evidence of the tablet may have been uncovered in iOS 11.3.

iHelpBR editor Filipe Espósito has discovered strings in the first iOS 11.3 beta that refer to a "modern iPad," which is notable since Apple's software engineers referred to the iPhone X as the "modern iPhone" in older firmware, according to both Espósito and developer Guilherme Rambo.

While the "modern iPad" strings could be placeholders, as commonly found in Apple's code, the discovery lends credence to rumors of an iPad Pro with Face ID, which would certainly be a logical next step in Apple's product roadmap.

KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo also expects Apple to release a new iPad Pro with Face ID this year, so there is a good chance the rumor is true. Like the iPhone X, the tablet reportedly lacks a Home button, although it will likely still have an LCD instead of OLED display due to supply, cost, and technological constraints.

It's unclear if the iPad Pro will have a notch for the TrueDepth system, as illustrated in the first mockup above, or if the device will have uniformly slim bezels on all four sides with enough room for the Face ID sensors.

Face ID is also expected to be featured on a second-generation 5.8-inch iPhone X, a larger 6.5-inch version dubbed iPhone X Plus, and a new, cheaper 6.1-inch model with an LCD, aluminum frame, and no 3D Touch.

Ugh, the problem with a bezel-less iPad is that there'll be no place to hold it without covering the screen! Watching movies on it would be such a pain if your palms are covering part of the image! I really hope Apple doesn't go bezel-less. It's just gimmicky and won't actually make the user experience better.
