With this new iPad, Apple adds another 'notch' to their line up ;)

Keep the bezels on the ipad so there is 1. a place to hold the ipad all around, 2. no ugly cyclops notch.
If they can work a deal with Marvel and Capcom, they could add a feature where every time you use FaceID, the iPad shouts out "Optic blast!"

If you're using TouchID to store multiple person's fingerprints you're doing it wrong. Craig Federighi said TouchID was designed to be used for multiple fingers on one user, not to allow for multiple different users. It is an unsupported workaround.

No reason FaceID couldn't be programmed to recognize multiple users though, it is just Apple's decision to limit it to a single person for now.

I don’t let other folks touch my devices so for me multiple Face ID users has no personal benefit but I see how it could others.

I think that the notch would span most of the top. I feel like they would use the ears from the screen in the same way that they would use it on the X.

Hope there is a nice notch on the iPad so this way there is no sacrifice in sensors or experience and naturally over time it will go away.

The notch doesn’t bother me. But not sure I’d want Face ID on. I mainly have my iPad Pro laying at a low angle on my desk next to my MacBook Pro, and won’t want to stand up and look down at it every time I want to unlock it.

Sure, once technology allows for it, it will go. Doesn't make the X any less of a phone today because of it. I don't even notice it.

Fair enough, it will always annoy some more than others. In fact, it occurs to me that it is in many ways a great bonus for Apple, too. At the moment, it serves to identify those who have the latest Apple device (which for many is a big deal). One the notch become ubiquitous, the technology well be there to lose it, and the lack of a notch will identify those with the latest devices. Ironic!

That swipe up gesture would be nice.

Just not sure if i can see ridding the home button in favor of gestures.

After you use iphoneX and its gesture you never want to go back to a mechanic button

Took me about a day or so to not press for the home button. Now I find myself trying to use the gestures on my iPad.

I have a couple of iPads in the house and I am trying gestures all they time to no effect.

Reading these and other posts makes me wonder if people use the four finger multitasking gestures on their iPads.

They’ve been around more than 5 years and I practically never use the home button (except for screenshots).

Yes please. Even if it has a notch, it will be such a small part of the screen, you wont notice it after a while.

As someone that is firmly in the notch-hating group, I hope this doesn't happen to the iPad too. Leave a bit of bezel at the top for the sensors to hide.
I'm fine with the notch on the iPhone because I use the device in portrait 95% of the time. On an iPad it would be incredibly stupid to have to inset content like the iPhone X does because I am pretty much 50/50 on portrait/landscape.

I agree. Almost everyone I know uses iPad in a landscape orientation.

Good point and I just tried to see if Face ID worked in landscape on the X annnnd it doesn’t, so I wonder if it will be a second gen..

Otherwise it would be very annoying to have to hold the iPad in portrait *just* to unlock the device.

Here’s how I view the notch: obviously because of tech constraints, BUT a way to brand Apple in the way they used the home button. It differentiates from all the other full screen phones nowadays and although I understand people have preferences, not upgrading *because* of the notch always seemed silly to me. It’s noticeable but not a deal breaker imo but again, preferences.

That being said, the iPad really DOESN’T need a notch and I don’t think they’ll add a massive one just to “match” the iPhone. I think it’ll have smaller bezels all around and just include the technology.

Just wait until you can only unlock it in portrait orientation.
I think that will be thought thru—most everyone uses their Ipads landscape. Can’t imagine they don’t take that into account.

Damn. I don't want to have to buy a new iPad, after having bought (and still loving!) last year's 12.9 Pro :p
But I like the iPhone X so much, a (quasi) bezel-free iPad would probably be too sexy to resist....
I have gen 1 12.9 and love it and skipped this one, have the next gen in my budget—I can’t imagine they won’t take into consideration most people use them horizontally. I would love a skinny bezel 12.9. And plan to buy 2nd gen Iphone X—I have 6sPlus so it will probably be time, but don’t know which one first.

It has this thing called palm rejection. A iOS device knows when your palm or thumb it just resting on the screen to hold the device and rejects its inputs.
Ah, yes—how did I not think of that—it comes into play as I use the Pencil every day.

In the home maybe, and perhaps a 2nd gen FaceID will allow for multiple faces. I'm more concerned with usability for my myriad users of different ages.
You could turn it off—perhaps not what you’d prefer, but I finally had to turn off my husband’s ID on his Ipad as it continued to give him issues (touch ID)

As I stare at this I realize how slow I am. Shouldn't the X have two notches? You know, to form an X? As a pro-notcher I want to support dual notches, but I worry it would take away the original X's charm. Maybe we could have a Y and an X.

Touch ID needs to go. After experiencing Face ID, each time I use my iPad Pro without it is irritating. If this requires a notch, so be it. I like the notch on my phone, so I doubt it would bother me on an iPad.

They have to get it working in landscape first.

Because I want to them to utilize as much screen space as possible. I also want to have the same design language from my iPhone to iPad. You may not agree, and that's fine, but it doesn't make me any sort of troll. I like the notch and think it adds some character to the design and makes it look futuristic. It doesn't bring anything negative.
Nobody wants the notch design language anywhere including on the iPhone. Everyone is willing to accept it as necessary on the iPhone. It clearly is not necessary on the iPad.

If Apple launch an iPad with a ‘notch’, in the screen, they will be the laughing stock of the tech world! Crippling a 10” screen just for the hell of it and it’s ‘design language’...

Let’s hope they don’t eh? But no doubt some people will love this ridiculous idea.

Beauty in the eye of the beholder and all that.

I do. It's okay for someone to have a different opinion than you.

That’s not a preference that’s just silly. Why you need a notch on a big screen? Your post has no logic. You’re trolling.

How is the below message "trolling" from
DNichter? That's called a preference. Just because your "Logic" doesn't match with his, doesn't mean it doesn't make sense for the sake of something he prefers.

Ah yes, now this is what I am looking forward to. I cannot wait for the iPad X revision. Keep the notch as well.

I've been thinking about updating my iPad Air 2. Perhaps this is the one.

Most likely it will be the one for me! Current iPad is broken and frankly I really mis it for travel. Maps does wonders and keeping connected to E-mail and other on the road chores is something iPad really excels at. Face ID is an obvious upgrade and one that I suspect will be well worth it.

As for this next gen iPad FACE ID will be nice of course but I'm really hoping for other more basic improvements. One of these would be more RAM with of course the faster SoC. The other would be improved AI handling features, this needs to be across the board from analog input to final digital processing. Ideally the AI processor will be improved performance wise.

In case you are wondering I'm really hoping that Apple can expand iOS to behave a lot like the Knowledge Navigator video from some years back. That means an operating system that can handle conversational interaction with the user. As good or bad as iOS is currently it is safe to say it has a long ways to go to really offer that type of experience. To get there they need to get the hardware up to snuff. In that regard the matrix processor doing AI chores will need to be improved.

Wishful thinking? Probably. I'm still wondering why Apple gave up on the Macs, even the laptops are getting pretty pathetic right now.

How are you supposed to hold an iPad that looks like one in the mock-up? You can't hold an iPad like a phone with your fingers wrapped around the sides.
If you have size 16 feet you can!!!!!!;););););););)

I have no issue with the notch either. I don’t understand how it’s such a big deal.
I hope this design comes with more RAM and a cpu that destroys all benchmarks, please keep Pro-motion, HDR too.
I wouldn’t mind BT 5.0 either.
This could be the actual laptop killer if it can have an operating system to match the internals.
June or September can’t come soon enough.

K.
