Despite all the fun part we had with this bug.
Well the sad part is, there is no official statement from Apple regarding this issue.
And in my opinion, this is a very serious bug, that can cause serious problems.
Problems like accidents, job losses, tests failures, miss understanding of formulas and time loss, etc.

Of course few people say well simply get a real calculator, or a other calculator app.
Sure we could, but then where is the additional value we get by buying a apple multipurpose gadget with this price high tag? This just shows that Apple hardware loosing its reliability.

A bug in the built-in Calculator app in iOS 11 is getting some major attention this week, despite the fact that it's been around since iOS 11 was in beta testing.

At issue is a calculator animation that causes some symbols to be ignored when calculations are entered in rapid succession. You can try it for yourself: Type 1+2+3 and then the equals sign into the Calculator app quickly.

Due to animation lag introduced when adding two or more numbers together, your result is more likely to be 24 than 6.

The same goes for many other calculations -- the Calculator ignores some inputs unless you're entering numbers slowly enough to account for the light-up button animations that highlight the keys that are being pressed. Symbols do not register when tapped while a number button is still highlighted, resulting in incorrect calculations if you're inputting numbers quickly. Reddit user cplr describes the problem:There are hundreds of complaints about the problem on reddit this week, but it's an issue that's been discussed on the MacRumors forums since the iOS 11 beta testing period. Throughout the beta testing process, the animation lag was not addressed, nor has it been fixed in any of the iOS 11 updates released so far. It's also still present in iOS 11.1.

Some users have experienced similar issues when using older versions of iOS, but the animation lag is noticeable enough in iOS 11 to make the Calculator nearly unusable when attempting to make rapid calculations.

Apple seem to be aware of the issue, because as The Loop points out, Apple employee Chris Espinoza says more than 70 people have filed a Radar report on the bug, alerting Apple to the problem. With it receiving so much attention, we could potentially see a Calculator fix in the next iOS 11 update.

In the meantime, iOS users who need a reliable alternative can use third-party apps like Calcbot and PCalc.

[doublepost=1508961985][/doublepost]if you do 4+5+6 it makes it 56 or 7+8+9 = 89

You can't unless you jailbreak. Believe me, that used to be the first thing I did. Made my phone feel a lot faster, especially in the apps with slow animations (worst offender: Music).

I'm on a 4S that is "stuck" at iOS9.
The phone is slow. But calculator works as advertised...

I hope they re-gain their sense at some point and allow to disable all the animations.
But then, people might hold onto their phones a year or two longer and that wouldn't be exactly too nice for the shareholders (and the options-holders and future shareholders...)

Sigh.

The problem isn't the calculations it's the buttons on the right not registering quickly enough when you go fast. Like when you do 4 + 5 + 6 ... you're actually doing 4 + 56 ... and I you were to press the + sign again it would show 60, not 56. With 7 + 8 + 9 ... it's actually doing 7 + 89 ... and it's only showing the last two numbers together that you pressed. If you press = or + again it will show 96. So basically ... the point is the buttons on the right, regardless if they're + - x or / ... it's not registering the buttons fast enough and it's putting two numbers together instead of separately. So 1 + 2 + 3 ... ends up being 1 + 23. It's really screwed up. If you press each number slowly ... then they will add up correctly. But that's ridiculous. Try just pressing + - x or / repeatedly and you will see massive lag with the buttons. If you press any of the numbers, they're instant with no lag.

No, it’s not calculating just fine because I pressed 1+2+3 and it came up with 24—clearly a wrong calculation. I didn’t enter 1+23, did I? If it were calculating just fine, the calculation wouldn’t have been wrong.

If you don’t want to call a wrong calculation a calculation glitch, feel free. But the fact remains, it’s a calculation glitch. Note I didn’t say there’s any problem with the calculation algorithm. I didn’t say that it wasn’t possible to go so slowly that it would calculate correctly.

Don’t engage in user blame and try to fault me for the calculation glitch; 24 is not right when I press 1+2+3 and it’s not the behavior Apple intends.

If you told me “1+2+3 equals 24” I would tell you you’ve got a calculation glitch.

Free your mind from it’s semantic rigidity—a “calculation glitch” precisely describes 1+2+3=24. If I’d entered 1+23 and gotten 24, that would have been the correct answer, and we wouldn’t be talking about a calculation glitch at all.

Dude this argument is getting out of hand. Look at the screen next time you type 1+2+3 quickly. It doesn't say 2 and then 3 it says 23 and that's why it's getting 24. Sure you typed that second + sign, but the calculator app didn't register it and the screen will say 23 instead of 2+3. You pressed = before you notice that it says 23. That's why I'm saying it's not a calculation glitch.

1+2+3 = 23, Courage!
Courage memes are so quaint especially after competitors validate Apple by following suit. Pixel 2, HTC, Moto Z, Chinese android manufacturers -- Apple was even beaten to the punch, but you sure as heck don't care about that ;)

Yeah it's not a calculation issue. It's the response time of the right side buttons.

Is that how there were issues when he was around too?
Yeah, next year when iOS 12 comes out people are going to whine about how iOS 12 is a piece of junk compared to the ultra-smooth iOS 11. This website seems to attract users with insanely short memory.

or maybe it does get worse every year

short memory lol

Somewhat hard to tell really since some people don't experience much in the way of significant issues with many updates but then will with some update, and for them that will be the worst one while previous ones were fine. For some that's iOS 11, for others that was iOS 10, or 9, or 8, etc.

The glitch that bothers me is tapping the Calculator or Timer button on Control Center doesn't take me to the app, just goes to Home, almost like it overloads the memory and it can't bear it. This happens on my iPod Touch (the latest one). I can't believe this actually happens, and I haven't seen it mentioned. Is it just iPods?

Sounds like then the statements describing the perfection and utopia that were supposedly there with Steve Jobs are equally meaningless blanket statements that say absolutely nothing then.

So let's ignore blanket statements , what severity do you judge this as ?

I think I just found out why so many patients have been dying lately. Calculating drug doses in the calculator is causing over doses.

JK but it probably is causing someone to die somewhere. Told my nurses about the bug.

This is a design defect, not a reliability issue. They spent all their time on visual effects and apparently zero time on usability development and testing.

Something is not right at Apple HQ. Fully functional computer companies don't release defective calculator apps. They also don't let their under-spec'd hardware go three years or more without updates.

If you have sounds turned on for key presses you'll hear a "click" when the calculator recognizes a tap. You won't hear a click for the "+" key if you work fairly quickly doing something like 1 + 2 + 3. This goes hand and hand with the "+" key returning from a highlighted state-- it won't click (or recognize the tap) if it's still highlighted, and it just takes too long to return from being highlighted. Seems as if all of the basic operations (+, -, x, ÷) will fail to register clicks if you tap them quickly more than once. Hoping they fix this in 11.0.4!

I’ve tried a lot of early betas, and I’m not exaggerating when I say more than one of them has had less bugs than the public releases of the last couple years.

At least the calculator retains the overly-dumbed down flat design and smaller button design from ios7, so that’s gotta be worth some forgiveness about not being able to trust it to add, right?
