Using your fingerprint to authenticate was fine, the only problem was when you had wet hands.

Now we are going to have to present our face and double click the sleep/wake button? This is not streamlining the process at all!

Apply Pay in the shops is going to look weird using iPhone X

So no more having a sneaky look at your phone under the desk in a meeting then. Not the same if you have to raise it for everyone to see. No more quick peek to see the time in the middle of the night. Now what do you do, switch on the light?
I guess will have to use a code again or something but I'm not convinced it'll be as useful and certainly not something many people will want to do in public. I really like like the home button
I'm not bothered about inductive charging as long as the battery gets me through the day either. I don't care when I'm at home and I'll still need to be able to plug into trains and at the airport so when am I going to use it? infinity screes are all very well if you don't want to use a case and although I've tried without a case, it's always a mistake and the screens get damaged before too long. How do you protect the front of the screen if the screen goes round the side?

With the Chinese phones getting a whole lot better these days at a third of the price, I do wonder if they have just taken the wrong turn for the first time. Will they be able to justify this price in 5 years? It seems unlikely.
Too soon to tell of course but for the first time, from what I've heard, I'd. actually rather stick to the old phone.

Yeah! Apple's IT department is really gotta crack down!

Energous.... WattUp...

I hope so, I really do. There is also oasis cota. But if they only do Qi, it will be a huge huge disappointment for me!

I really hope the next AppleTV allows bitstreaming of audio, so that receivers can do the decoding. There nailing it with video it seems, so fingers crossed they give audio some love!

I'm in the UK. "Apple Releases Phone" hasn't been enough on its own to hit the - mainstream - headlines for a few years now.

The story will be on the front page of the main news sites (Sky/BBC) on Tuesday, it won't be the top story (why would it be, there are hurricanes and earthquakes going on in the world) but if it was Samsung/Google/LG etc it wouldn't even warrant a mention.

"Hasn't been enough to hit the mainstream headlines for a few years now" :p

They only talk about the name, having 3D camera capabilities, edge to edge screen, no home button. Not all the little details listed on this site and 9-5. In the news there's always little details every year. I don't see it any different this year.

The other thing as well is that another Company has actually managed to sort an integrated fingerprint scanner AND I believe that it works when your fingers are wet!

No, I don't think Apple needs help to hype. It's doing a grand job on its own.

You do know that Apple spends in the order of two billion dollars a year just on marketing, don't you. For that, you get a lot of skill and know how on maximising your headlines and how to get everyone to look at you at just the right time.

... and you think that leaks are extremely expensive or something?

Apple does spend a lot on marketing, sure - they are a global company whose ads are shown everywhere on the planet. That marketing budget includes print and TV ads in the US and building-sized posters in China. That's where the money goes.

Leaks aren't part of it. A leak removes your ability to dictate the narrative, and lets some randomer introduce the world to your products. Apple's marketing efforts are very much the opposite - all about controlling information and shaping the narrative.

I'm a sucker for the latest and greatest CPU though. I'm on a 6S+ right now, tough decision on whether to get a 7+ $100 cheaper (after Tuesday), or suck it up and deal with a glass back.

Its a personal decision. In my situation it was £615 to buy new now, or probably spend £1000-1200 on the latest in 2 weeks. The latest cpu in an iPhone offers little benefit in features or genuine performance over say the iPhone 7 plus - it's hardly a slouch in ram, cpu or camera! I'd rather spend that cash on the AirPod and the 4K Apple TV.

Developer and public betas is where it all went wrong. Or maybe third-party apps. When the first iPhone was announced, all of the IP was contained in a relatively small group that Steve Jobs could control. If these leaks would make him absolutely infuriated, then it's probably a good thing he's not around any more. His life would be a living hell.

Actually, where it all went wrong this time is when someone with access to firmware that was not meant for public consumption put it on public-facing servers. Twice. If I were in Tim Cook's shoes, I'd be livid.

"NetworkNo4KForYou"

So a 15MB connection is needed. I'm probably looking at this naively but I wonder if we'll get to a point where Apple feels they're losing revenue because their customers' internet isn't fast enough - leading to them entering the internet service provider game. It's clear that monopolistic ISPs have a silly incentive to limit speeds. I would love for Apple to go up against these companies that spend all their money on lobbying rather than producing value.

It’s 15 Mbps, not 15 MB. 15 Mbps is nearly ubiquitous in 1st world urban areas. Hell, I have 1 Gbps.

People are going a bit over the top with the face ID. At night, assuming it isn’t like some other OLED screens that always display the time outside your pocket, just tap it and it’ll light up. Has nobody used an Apple Watch?

If you need to unlock it in a meeting, briefly look down. Done. I wouldn’t fret.

The bigger issue is smartphones are becoming commoditised. It will be challenging to charge a premium over time. The real question is will the X just be a one off?

15 Mbps is only needed for 4K streaming, too. There's nothing preventing the box from streaming at 1080p, if someone has a slower connection, I'm sure.

I just hope Apple has rethought the ATV remote and added directional buttons that can be used instead of the touchpad. Adding a "last channel" button would be nice too -- especially with more live TV streaming services available now. Really, I hope they add three or four buttons that are user-programmable. Probably won't happen, though. If the remote is better than the ATV 4 remote, it'll be an instant buy for me even though I don't have a 4K TV.

I wonder why some Apple employee (probably future ex-employee) went to the extreme point of leaking something massive as a GM.

Perhaps he hates open spaces :D ?

Well, looks like it’s going to be FaceID for everything, kinda disappointing to me, I really wanted some form of TouchID or even touch-less ID with the new sensors.

Now if it works this good to pass security for banks and Apple Pay, will probably never get touchless fingerprint scanning. Would still be nice to have that option.

Sorry but what is and how would a touch less fingerprint scanner work?

[doublepost=1505107071][/doublepost]Publishing a GM that you know to be stolen puts 9to5 right up there with Gawker....way to trash your reputation.

I think it's the funniest thing to happen in years. Apple hype up these events like the 'second coming'. I just love the fact their balloon of pomposity and sef-importance has well and truly been pricked on this occasion.

Serves them right. What a self-obssesed lot.
