iOS 12 runs so good, I think I'll delay the upgrade to iOS 13 for a while, or even completely. I can't see any future iOS updates doing anything but slowing down the device unless Apple does another iOS 12-like update in a few years again.

To each their own. I like timely updates and added features. The overwhelmingly positive experience I have with iOS far outweighs the few bugs and glitches I've had. If you don't like iOS, why are you reading a thread about iOS?

I'm sure most of the people here like iOS.

The issue is Apple trying to get you to install the latest iOS on older hardware where the user experience will be sub par. From a customer's standpoint, let the customer get new hardware if they want to run the latest iOS. Just don't force the latest iOS on customers who are happier with older hardware and have no issues with the iOS that they are running.

That's not what I said. Whether you like it or not, you have no choice.
Also I never said I did or didn't like it and who cares either way? I have an interest in it as I have made the purchase.

I guess I was under the assumption that iOS 12 improved the performance and includes security updates for devices back to the iPhone 5S? I also have never had iOS automatically download on my phones or iPads so I was not aware Apple was forcing users to update software.

I second that - yet still surprised that it has come this far

Strictly speaking they aren't but........
  • They hound you with notifications until you do.
  • The phone will download updates in the background whether you like it or not, (not everybody is on an unlimited wifi connection).
  • Once downloaded the messages to install are sometimes worded carefully and it's actually easy to install accidentally.
  • But if your phone goes in for repair, it WILL come back with the latest OS if they wipe it. That part is surely them forcing you.
Must have deleted the update over 20 times. Run my own business and use my phone for work, if it is functional I will want to leave it that way until I'm happy to update. A borked forced install would royally p*** me off.

Couldn't have anything to do with the way updates are annoyingly force-fed to users.

Nope.

You are correct. iOS12 is the best thing that happened to iPhone and co in years. Especially older devices. Lots of people got burned with 11 and are weary of updates. But 12 did deliver. 12.1 even more.
And no, of course there is no auto update. There is an option to auto update, at night, while plugged in, and on wifi but you have to turn it on. Otherwise you get a notice badge on the settings app that there is an update available. Thats all.

Where is that please? I've changed nothing since iOS11, but it's doing it.

Then it was on under 11? I do not know 11 because it was just, well, not usable. I had it on an iPad air and was hoping it sorts itself after indexing. Had to go away and missed the point of no return (10 was not signed anymore) and was stuck with a basically useless iPad. iPhone remained at 10, so did the iPad pro. 12 comes along and all is good, way better then 11 and better (and smaller,) then 10.
Autoupdate is in settings-general-software updates-automatic updates. Disable that and no more auto updates. Simple.

I kind of understand why some people might hold out on iOS 10 or earlier, but I really don't get why 17% of devices are still running iOS 11. Who are these people that are holding out on iOS 11?

I'm guessing the same people that don't care what version they have (anymore) and turned off (or ignore) iOS update nagging.

I don't know about previous versions, but iOS 12 literally has an option to make updates manual and not automatic.

Which is odd ... because I tried to get as far away from iOS 11 as soon as humanly possible. iOS 12 was a massive improvement over iOS 11 performance-wise.

I just see you posted pictures. So you disabled auto update. All is fine. It gives you the option to download and install updates but is not doing it automatic anymore. So where is the problem?

That 8% still in iOS 10 and 9 is a troubling number. That should be smaller. It's the reason Instagram pulled hi-res support and is building their code with Xcode 9. Around 4% are still running iOS 9. For Instagram, that means 40 millions users on iOS 9.
Potentially some devices that don't support some later iOS versions?

False statistic again from Apple. If they quit forcing people to upgrade or allowed people to revert to a previous version those numbers would plummet.
How do people that have left the platform stack up in these statistics ?
With selective “stat engineering” to avoid unwanted (/invoke desired) outcomes, stats don’t have the slightest meaning anymore.
Apart from cheap PR.
I'm sure the fact that the iOS installer pre-downloads in the background and then prompts you to update with no obvious negative choice has nothing to do with it. :p

I must have deleted it on my iPad more than 10 times already in the last two months.

Couldn't have anything to do with the way updates are annoyingly force-fed to users.

Nope.
The statistic is for developers to know the breakdown of what devices are running. It's not related to why devices are running a particular version, or how they came to run that version, or whether or not that version is good or anything like that.

As you can see from my images that is not the case. It is STILL downloading updates. I had just deleted one before taking those screenshots.

Jailbreakers for example

There is a new option iOS 12 for automatic update installation. Unfortunately, that option only relates to installing the update basically, the automatic update download is still something that is separate and is still there without any user options to disable it.

I've received update notices on iOS 12 on many devices, but none of them force installation.

They've added the option to have it do the whole thing without prompt, it seems.

With Automatic Updates set to "Off", it still downloads the updates in the background and prompts you incessantly to update (usually right while you're in the middle of something), with it set up to try to get you to say yes or schedule a time.
