Apple plans to introduce the next-generation version of iOS, iOS 12, on June 4 at its Worldwide Developers Conference. Rumors have suggested this is going to be a bug fix and performance improvement update, with Apple delaying some features until iOS 13 to focus on these internal changes.

There are, however, rumors that we may see updates that include cross-platform apps for Mac and iOS devices, new Animoji, Animoji support for FaceTime, updated parental controls, and an enhanced version of Do Not Disturb. Rumors never cover all of the features that we see in new versions of iOS, though, so there could be additional changes in the works.

With that in mind, we've taken a look at some of the most-desired features MacRumors readers are hoping for in iOS 12, pulled from our forums.

User Interface Changes

- Dark mode - Unsurprisingly, a system wide dark mode for iOS is one of the most hoped for features for iOS 12, just as it was for iOS 11 and iOS 10. Apple users have wanted a true dark mode for years, but there's no word that it's coming in iOS 12.

- Split Screen mode for iPhone - The option to run two apps side by side on the iPhone would be useful on larger iPhones, especially with rumors pointing towards a 6.5-inch iPhone in 2018.

- More customization - MacRumors reader Breezygirl would like to see Apple add more Android-like customization options, such as the ability to change the background in messages, adjust the SMS bubble colors, or add a theme to the OS to shift the colors.

- Desktop mode - On some Android devices, there's a feature where you can dock a smartphone to use it as a desktop machine replacement, attaching it to a larger display, a keyboard, and a mouse. It's a long shot, but MacRumors reader Marrakas would like to see Apple implement similar functionality.

- Volume redesign - The design of the indicator when you adjust the volume on the iPhone has always been a point of contention with iOS users, and so it's no surprise that in iOS 12, MacRumors readers are hoping for a new, less intrusive volume interface that takes up less screen space.

[*]Improved battery widget - The battery widget could be improved by allowing all of a user's devices to be displayed for quick cross-device battery checks.
[*]No more shake to undo - Several MacRumors readers are tired of the shake to undo/redo feature in the iPhone, which can be activated accidentally. Some readers would like to see an undo feature enabled through a different gesture.

App Improvements

- Camera controls in the Camera app - On a lot of Android devices, the camera app provides manual controls for photo taking. Apple has no similar feature for full manual control, and it would be nice if it were an option, even one that had to be toggled on in Settings. Other settings are hidden in the Settings app, and users would like to see these more readily accessible.

- Aspect Ratio in Camera app - Multiple MacRumors readers would like to see an option to set a default aspect ratio for photos.

- FaceTime - Several MacRumors readers are hoping for group FaceTime. Rumors suggest Apple's working on it, but it might not come in iOS 12. Animoji are expected to come to FaceTime, though, so you can converse with friends and family as an Animoji character.

- App Store wishlists - The revamped App Store in iOS 11 removed app wishlists that some users took advantage of often. This is a feature that quite a few people miss.

- Photos improvements - MacRumors reader kirky29 is hoping for a major overhaul to the Photos app with a lot more functionality for doing things like viewing and editing metadata, changing grid size, altering the order of the photos, and more.

- Music app overhaul - MacRumors reader GermanSuplex has several suggestions for ways Apple could improve the Music app, including the ability to turn iCloud purchases off if desired, improved playcount syncing across devices, the ability to sort songs within playlists by different parameters, refinements and improvements to cloud services and the way the app handles metadata, more control over which devices playlists sync to, and better syncing of music content in general.

- Messages search and archive - A more robust search feature for the Messages app would be a welcome change, as would an option to archive messages and snooze messages, as Joseph H points out.

iPad

- Mouse support on iPad - This one is a long shot, but MacRumors reader boston04and07 wants to see Apple add mouse support for the iPad for navigating through apps.

- iPhone apps for iPad - Multiple iPhone apps, including Weather, Calculator, Health, and Activity are missing from the iPad and have been exclusive to the iPhone for years.

Settings and Systemwide Features

- Revamped Wi-Fi and Bluetooth Toggles - With iOS 11, Apple changed the functionality of the Wi-Fi and Bluetooth toggles in the Control Center. These buttons no longer permanently turn off Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, and instead just disable the features for a set amount of time. In iOS 12, MacRumors readers would like to see the on/off functionality returned or enabled through another gesture, such as a longer press.

controlcenterwifitoggles-800x707.jpg

- Do Not Disturb improvements - Do Not Disturb functionality on the iPhone is fairly basic, and that is actually one of the features Apple's rumored to be working on for iOS 12. The ability to toggle DND on and off for specific apps would be useful, as boston04and07 points out, and being able to set schedules for different days of the week would also be useful. An option to hide notifications entirely would be a welcome change for those who want to use their devices in peace.

- Biometric locking for specific apps - Third-party apps can require you to use a fingerprint, Face ID, or a password to access sensitive data, but as MacRumors reader TimFL1 says, this isn't available for first-party apps like Photos, nor for specific parts of apps, like individual photo albums.

- iCloud notifications - If you have multiple devices and get a notification from an app like Apple News, it goes to all of your devices instead of just one, and viewing the notification on just one device doesn't clear it from all of them. If Apple implemented iCloud notifications, notifications would work more smoothly across devices, appearing on just one device and clearing on all.

iPhone X

- Always-on display for iPhone X - Some Android smartphones offer an always-on display, something that Apple could perhaps theoretically enable thanks to the OLED display on the iPhone X, which eats up less battery life. MacRumors readers would like to see an always-on display on the iPhone X for things like the time and incoming notifications, even though it's probably a long shot at this point in time.

AI

- Siri - Improvements to Siri was one of the most frequent requests, with specifics that include Spotify integration, multi-lingual query support, and, in general, just features to make Siri smarter and more like Alexa or Google Assistant.

More than anything, most of our readers are hoping that Apple is going to hunker down and focus on bug fixes and performance improvements to make existing features operate smoothly and without issues.

Apple is said to be planning to address stability and performance concerns in this update, and has gone as far as delaying planned features in favor of underlying fixes.

Do you have other features you're hoping to see in iOS 12 that didn't make our list? Let us know in the comments.

[doublepost=1527156062][/doublepost]I would love to see the toggles in iOS Safari settings to stop the looping animated GIF and prevent the autoplay of YouTube videos. So irritating!!!

Jalopnik.com is the worst offender of looping animated GIFs.

My no 1 feature I want for iOS is for call notifications to work like all other notifications. Today, they completely take over the screen (especially annoying on the iPad) interrupting whatever you are doing, with no way to ignore unless you actually answer or reject the call.
This adheres to when making calls was the most important thing you did on your iPhone - that’s not the case today.

Ability to disable bluetooth devices when not needed.

With so many bluetooth connections, not all are required at once, some are only used to configure.
No need to connect to them all the time.

Also, some devices like GPS and motorcycle Bluetooth headsetsneed to be connected in a particular order.
disabling them is alot easier than forgetting them and then having to add them.

Not just app.
Allow us to lock specific files/folders/apps.

But apparently apple thinks Filesand control are of no use when it comes to ios.

Big handicap... very shortsighted.
Maybe just use Guided Access. You disable it with Touch ID. And you set a shortcut triple-press on home button to turn it on.

Basically I get Apple in this one matter.

Because why do you want to lock your app with the same security measure as the phone.
That's what Guided Access is for. Then that person cannot exit that given app, you just open Calculator or phone app and he can't browse your Facebook or Maila app.

The only thing it would be useful if you could lock private album/folder in Photos app. This one can't be accomplished with Guided Access because it's still the same app and choosing screen region won't cut it as well.

Better multiple attachmnet procedure for mail....
Maybe do it from the other side, mark them in Files app and then share it via Mail.

Another thing: it should be possible to mark an individual wi-fi network as "cellular type".

Why? Because you sometimes connect to a wi-fi network that's severely limited in capacity but iPhone tries to download iOS updates, upload videos and photos and God knows what else in the background. Last summer I was on a ferry in the Med and paid a good amount of money for 100MB which I thought was going to be enough for one night. Within half an hour my quota was gone, despite me switching off photo uploads. The same applies to airplane internet, although in my experience they limit amount of data per second and not the total data size.

There should be an option "Treat connection as cellular" in the wi-fi network options for these cases.

Why don't you work at Apple?

I would like to see an app comparable to KeyChain in MacOS. How many times does a 3rd party app ask me for a PW without allowing me to directly access my passwords. Then I have to open Safari in order to see the passwords, it's a clunky process.

Comprehensive parental management and reporting!!! This needs to be a top priority and done by Apple so it's ingrained in iOS, can't be circumvented, and is required to be implemented by all developers and their apps. This will cause Google to step up too for competitive reasons because if they don't every parent will only buy their kids iPhones.

Parents desperately need comprehensive, yet easy to use tools that allow them to control what kind of apps a child has and how much time they're allowed to use them on a per app and/or category basis (video, social media, gaming, etc.) as well as comprehensive reporting so parents can easily see all their kids activities on the device. This would show them the sort of content they're consuming, how much time they're spending on the device overall along with a drill down to time spent on each app, see what they've been sending in social media, Messages, SnapChat, etc. to make sure they're not bullying or being bullied, see what they've been watching, see what apps they've downloaded and been using, and see total time they've been using the device overall (this would be good for adults and self-monitoring too). This would include the ability to disable a device for all but emergency purposes (911, calling/texting home or family, etc.), like turning it off if after bedtime, or if they got into trouble, or maybe just dinner time with family or friends so they actually talk amongst each other vs. just there staring at their device incessantly, etc. Just taking it away is not the right solution.

Come on Apple! They're one of the greatest technology companies in the world - always saying how much they care about their end users and want to protect them while making technology safe and simple to use. They could do this easily for kids protection and health and well being, yet they do next to nothing meaningful on this front!!! As a result, we're seeing this vast generation of young people turn into zombies, losing their social skills, become depressed, have unrestricted access to any and all porn and violence and get addicted to it at extremely early ages. All while Apple sits idly by collecting profits on their destructive behavior. Nice legacy Tim. You should be leading on this front, but you're not. Now even your board and stockholders are asking you to step up to the plate for this since you're so lackluster on your actions and could basically care less beyond paying it lip service on occasion.

I just bought a new iPad Pro, can someone please tell me why there isn’t a native calculator app? Absolutely ridiculous

I want a simple half-step backward: a control panel. When I swipe up from the bottom on my iPad, I get the dock, which is all well and good, but to adjust the brightness, volume, BT, Airdrop, etc, I have to pull up the app switcher. Why can we not go back to a control panel that comes up right away, with the dock, so that I do not have to thumbnail the app I am using in order to make an adjustment?

And while they are at it, may I please have fixed brightness control as an option? Sometimes it decides poorly for me.

Get a Samsung Galaxy S8 or higher.....now you have all these features and more
Pretty much true.
But then again, I dont want to buy a new Galaxy every second year, but thats what I have to if I buy Samsung Phones.

I guess I'm gonna switch to Android 2019 too. But I would never ever try a Samsung again.

I could yes, but i find Android's way of handling this issue a lot better, I might already be composing amail and think "I would like to add x number of pics", your way works better if I already know I am gonna be sending pics.

iOS is really tight and solid and stable. Sometimes stuff crashes, and I was having a problem with Pages and Numbers not giving me a file list for a while, but the reliability is top notch for me. How good is Tiramisu, or whatever they are calling it now?

I want rotation lock exemptions for videos.

I often don’t want my screen rotating at all as I might be reading at an angle like in bed. Website, home screen etc.

So it’s left on almost all the time like with the silent lock.

However when you want to watch a video it’s also locked. Videos need to be in landscape. So now I have to open up control centre and turn the option off, watch the video, and then turn it back on.

Either allow a system wide option in settings to exempt videos, or have an icon on the video overlay to allow rotate (next to volume maybe or the zoom icon).

It might be up to the developers.

In Apple Music when you have rotation lock turned on, it still rotates the videos to full screen.

Just take any $50 Android device and borrow all the features from it like:

- ability to set default apps
- move icons anywhere on the home screen
- be able to swipe away incoming calls so that the phone isn't useless while ringing
- ability to actively run apps in the background
- split screen multitasking
- better notifications
- clean up menu hierarchy
- make Siri smart
- native file manager
- fix semi-weekly iMessage soft brick vulnerabilities
...

Here is one flaw I want fixed: I leave autocorrect on because it saves me some effort, but the damn thing keeps wanting to change “its” to “it's” – I almost never use contractions, so I would like a switch to disable contractions from autocorrect.

I haven't seen this one yet.... Revamp FaceID and the entire unlock process. FaceID needs to be as fast as Touch ID was. When you raise your phone and your face is detected, the phone should just unlock, no swiping up. I would like to get rid of the animation that occurs when an app recognizes your face as well. It's slow and unnecessary. How will I know a site accepted my login? Because it logs me in.

Let us re-map the flashlight and camera icons on the lock screen. Closing apps should be easier, as should accessing control center.

I just recently updated from iOS 9 to 11 and I sure miss how Touch ID worked on iOS 9. All I had to do was lightly touch the home button not press but touch it and it unlocked so fast. I absolutely hate how I now have to touch it and press it down, it already reads false pressings and will sometimes activate Siri when all I bloody want is to open my phone. I truly hate how iOS 11 has messed up what worked perfectly fine in iOS 9 with Touch ID.

I also hate how notifications are displayed. I also hate how when I turn off WiFi or Bluetooth in the control panel that it will turn itself back on tomorrow. Now I have to take extra steps in settings to REALLY turn it off. How convoluted is that?

I’m sorry but iOS should be working better than this in ways I feel like I jumped 2 steps back going from iOS 9 to 11 but heck I’m safer right from security threats? Lol

Except for the revised Notifications system and improved Siri, I don't want any major changes in iOS 12.0. It should be more like MacOS X 10.6 ("Snow Leopard")--mostly bug fixes.
