The software update screen was telling me that my “iOS is up to date” at 14.8. Then a small banner at the bottom told me I could upgrade to iOS 15 too. Apple doesn’t want people to update.

I showed Live Text to some of my family members and friends - all of them updated to iOS 15 immediately afterwards.
That's because 15.0 is missing the key "features" they showed off for it (all the FaceTime stuff isn't working yet) and I'm sure they don't want people to install it and then class action over the lack of anything actually new in the new update.

I'd hide that it was available too if I were Apple.

Most of my family updated but I had informed them as I was under the belief that SharePlay for screen sharing was being rolled out in the 15.0 release but not so until 15.1. Egg on my face I guess for not paying close attention.

Literally 99% of the public do not care in the slightest.
Remember when people said consumers would boycott the iPhone 13?
Well…
I’m telling you right now, if millions and millions, if not billions, of people are willing to put up with Facebook crap, Apple has absolutely nothing to worry about

oh there was never a doubt that the ovis aries (phone people) will continue to just accept whatver apple/facebook/google do.. the computer people are the only ones that will try to resist but at this point, it's probably a lost cause.

I love that Apple isn't forcing people onto iOS 15 like they have in the past with previous iOS releases, but I think they may have gone too far in the opposite direction - there should at least be a notification to alert people that they can either update to iOS 15 or stay on iOS 14.
Similar to the chip A14 and A15 there is very little reason to upgrade and Apple knows it unless there is some feature one is looking forward too.

Companies like Amazon have me royally annoyed this year. I'm very used to seeing a flood of app updates on a new iOS launch. This year not so much.

Amazon Music is completely broken with Carplay.

I have opened discussions on their forums which I was told to basically go away its beta since June.

I have opened tickets with support which were ignored.

Opened new ticket on RC ignored.

Opened another new ticket after release ignored.

Two people opened new discussions on the forum one got the response of uninstall and reinstall the app (Their canned response to everything) and the other said we are now aware Carplay doesn't function with iOS 15 we have no updates on when this will be fixed.

Ok mom and pop developer sure. Amazon is incapable of testing since June?

My situation might not be that common, but since I have a new iPhone arriving this Friday I decided not to update my current iPhone wait so that my experience of iOS 15 was on the new device. Maybe some other people do something similar.

maybe people are not impressed with the “new” features
For me it's an Iphone 11 pro with IOS 13. Im on a 2018 mac mini with Mojave.
Apple doesn't have backward compatibility with OS/IOS, too bad.
I may have to wait until the next Iphone. waiting for some music software to be compatible with
Big sur and M1.

Well the backlash was enough for Tim Cook himself to release a statement. And he doesn’t get out of bed unless he can expect his actions to increase his net worth by at least €10 million.

Perhaps because people are simply waiting for their new iPhones, WITH IOS 15 ALREADY ON IT, to then 'update'.

Can a website be any more melodramatic!

I turned off automatic updates before Monday - I usually wait a few days to install a major release, in case they turn around quickly to push out a .0.1 release (like 15.0.1). If nothing appears before Friday, I'll probably install it then.

I updated to iPadOS 15 as soon as it was available on Sept 20. Big mistake on my part. Typically I keep up with what is going on in the beta testing, but didn't have as much time to do that this year. I found the Safari interface changes too horrible to bear, especially those to the Bookmarks sidebar, and the new widget layout was also crap. Today I downgraded to iPadOS 14.8. I hate iPadOS 15. Apple has lost its friggin' mind. Thankfully I had only installed iPadOS 15 on my iPad Air 2020, and had left iPadOS 14.8 on my iPad mini 5. Because both iPads basically mirrored each other as far as data and apps go, I was able to downgrade the iPad Air 2020 to iPadOS 14.8 and then restore it from a very recent iPad mini 5 iCloud backup. Took less than an hour total. Then I immediately turned off Updates on the iPad Air 2020 in Settings! (BTW, before I downgraded the iPad Air 2020, it had already completed two iCloud backups, therefore I couldn't restore from them else it would have also restored it to iPadOS 15.)

I bet those figures above probably don't subtract those of us who downgraded.

I also installed iOS 15 on my iPhone XR, and I’m happy with it. Apple didn't mess up the interface on iOS 15 like they did on iPadOS 15.

I also installed tvOS 15 on my ATV 4K 2017 and I’m happy with it too. It did have a slight glitch with the new 2021 remote not functioning for a few minutes, but eventually it started working correctly. I expect that after tvOS 15 installed, there was a separate update to the 2021 remote and that had to finish before it started working again. But that is just a guess. I know that Fire TVs have separate updates for their remotes, so Apple might do that as well.

Maybe because, at least in the case of my iPhone and my wife's, when we clicked on Software Update it said iOS 14.8 was current but there was a separate link below to update to iOS 15.

Edit: Sorry. I see I was way behind with that one.

Did everyone forget that Apple said they would continue to support iOS 14 with security updates after iOS 15 was released?

Apple’s problem and benefit is being stuck in the same yearly cycle. It’s a benefit because it’s predictable for the people who need the predictability. For example, developers always know that WWDC is in June and new OSes, along with new devices, come in September. However, that’s a problem, also, because there is inevitably years (2021) where the updates will seem underwhelming and boring. I‘ve thought for years that Apple should go for more of a 2 year release schedule on OSes and devices. They can still release “S” models in off years, with a bumped up processor and the like, but without anything major. Same with the OSes. There is little reason to do a yearly major OS update on anything. Today’s OSes are mature and work well for years. If they waited until 2023 to release iOS 16 and iPhone 14 it would help to build excitement and anticipation. Every year has gotten old and boring.

I never update to a new OS right away. I generally wait for the first update which usually happens within the first month. That way I avoid any of the big bugs with a newly released operating system.

This is a strange move for Apple. Not sure why they are doing this.
I had that, too, and even clicking it did nothing. Turns out, I still had an old profile loaded that I needed to delete first.
Once I figured that out, I ended up seeing rumors of 15.1 and thought I'd just wait for that.

I never got a notification to update to iOS 15. Didn't even know it was out on Monday.

Maybe Apple is staggering the updates to better offload the servers.
Yeah I had to click on a “do you want to upgrade to iOS 15?” button on the bottom of the screen on my parents phones to upgrade theirs, it wasn’t in a normal place and it certainly wasn’t automatic.

Suddenly immediately after iOS 15 installed on an iPhone 11, three different lightning cables are acting up. Hate focus mode and want regular old do not disturb back. And you're welcome Apple, upgraded to another tier of iCloud storage.
Do not disturb hasn't entirely changed. You can use DND the same way without setting up the rest of the other focus modes.
