I can think of at least two reasons why:

1) The CSAM debate is still not quite over;

2) This is the first time Apple presented iOS 15 as a “quiet” and “by the way” update, somewhat hidden at the bottom of the screen. If a user already had iOS 14.8 installed, they would not even get the usual red update bubble in Settings. This time around people had to actively opt in to install iOS 15, which is very unusual.

Two whole days and it’s a news event?

🙄

I can’t update my iOS devices without breaking the ecosystem with my old Macs. I haven’t been willing to shell out yet for new Macs because I don’t know WTF Apple is doing with regard to power users. My Macs are stuck at High Sierra and updating my iPad or iPhone beyond iOS 12.x breaks various interacting things (iCloud Safari sync, app updates break document compatibility, etc).

So... yeah, I’m not jumping on iOS 15 either. I’m also still on an iPhone 6s because Apple took away TouchID. So... 🤷🏽‍♂️

It feels like a complete reversal. They went from pushing updates on everyone no matter what to hiding the update in a tiny link at the bottom beneath misleading text saying you are up to date. It almost seems deliberate.
I have to be honest, I didn't even notice the button at the bottom of the screen in post #7 until you mentioned it. I saw it and thought, wow @Paddle1 didn't get the update yet.

I literally upgraded to Big Sur on Monday because I figured that was going to probably be my last chance to do so. I'm already up to $80 in software updates I had to purchase, and about 8 hours of hunting through tech support forums to fix stuff that was broken. I am in no hurry to update anything else at this point.

Perhaps people don’t like the new icon layout on the home?
However that was already clear from the feedback they got with the beta versions.
But they insist to want to teach people how to use their own devices…
Perhaps the team who made the butterfly keywboard has been moved to iOS design? 😉
The new Home Screen is truly awful. You add one widget and you loose four spaces from the grid for apps. They have to bring back the layout of iOS 14 which compressed the grid. It looked much better and you could keep as many widgets as you like without affecting the number of apps you could have.

Anyone surprised after their blatant Privacy Fiasco with the backdoor disguised as Virtue BS .
They damaged their integrity and commitment to privacy mantra with that stupid move… ( which is up in limbo land right now ) and lost many people’s trust.
They have to come out and apologize for the blunder and use every once of their PR to repair the damage….
At the moment they are going the path of “ ignore it it will go away “. It wont Apple… u need to be Vocal about the blunder and reassure your customers Apple !!!

Why wouldn't you be able to upgrade to Big Sur later? Big Sur and other macOS versions don't become unsigned like iOS versions do. Big Sur will be available to install months/years from now, just like previous versions of macOS.

I have not yet updated my iPhone and iPad. I have the PB installed on my SE and I'm really in no rush to update as there isn't a feature in iOS 15 that I really want. I'll eventually update my devices though.

iOS 13 - the last version without App Library and widgets does not mix with app icons
iOS 14 - the last version that the default home screen layout only has app icons but widgets can be added... Also, the widgets since iOS 14 is a new version compared to iOS 13 and older... I find no use for App Library but Apple has it added for those users that need it...
iOS 15 - the default home screen layout has widgets mixed with app icons... If you prefer the app icons only, you'll have to remove the widgets to go back to the classic look...

Honestly, I wasn't sure of that. Even checking in here regularly I can't keep up with Apple's latest practices with stuff like that and I figured I'm going to do it at some point, might as well be now instead of spending even more time to investigate what would happen.

Can’t believe the number of times I’ve seen CSAM mentioned in this thread, as if that’s an issue average users care about.

it’s about the fact they changed how the user is notified/prompted to upgrade. That’s it. That’s the reason.
This!!!
People, other than people who read tech news blogs (a tiny tiny Minority), people who understand What CSAM hash matching is (an even smaller Minority), or people who are actually scared of their phone spying on them care about it.
99% of consumers just wait for their phones to update themselves, or notify them that there’s an update available, and this year it’s not doing that.
The CSAM matching isn’t something that the majority of people will ever concern themselves with because either they’ve never heard about it, they heard about it and just didn’t care, or they heard about it, thought about it for 20 seconds, and then completely forgot about it.
As I pointed out earlier in this thread, the soccer moms, grandpa‘s and TikTok teens who are The extreme vast majority of users of the iPhone simply do not know and do not care about that particular update.
Now down the road when Apple starts pushing out iOS 15.1 and advertising it to people and auto upgrading phones once more features become available, that’s when we will see the install base numbers rise.
But CSAM has absolutely nothing to do with the fact that iOS 14 was installed on more devices in 48 hours than iOS 15.

I’m actually repulsed. I hate the new Safari. It is a UX disaster. I wish I had not upgraded to iOS 15.
Hmm I did notnotice the safari UX disaster, winder why, oh I use chrome, mostly because of bookmark sync to pc, and no I 'm not a pc madtrer rzce oerson, but a few of the games i enjoy are not available on macs so I'm stuck on windows. Anyway is safari no ios15/ipados15 really that bad?

Pretty much. For the typical user, if they don't get nagged to update, they don't. And if there's no prompt to update, most users aren't purposely seeking it out.

The fact that Apple intends to continue issuing security updates to iOS 14, that eliminates any imperative to update to iOS 15 especially if user would rather wait until a more stable and updated version comes out. I know that with past updates, I ended up updating sooner than I would have liked because the new iOS version fixed a potentially serious security issue while the prior version was EOL'd.

CSAM is way down on the priority list for most users, if they'd even heard about the controversy to begin with.

Recent history has indicated that it is best to wait for x.3 or x.4 before upgrading based on Apple's software quality. Now it is gotten worse with major pieces of functionality missing.

The current rule, at least for me, is to wait for at least 2 point releases after the functionality I'm interested in is released. At this point that might be x.7+.

My older relatives all basically refuse to update (they are still on iOS 13) because they don't like "stuff changing how it works or where it's at, etc".

I don't blame them.
For a huge portion of "normal" users, so much of it is always just rearranging the deck chairs.

These are folks not looking for new ways to "multi-task", nor have Safari get all f'ed up for no tangible reason other than "why not!?"

Apple really needs to stop screwing with things just for the hell of it.

It's a very 'Meh' update for me at the moment, I'm still using my 7 Plus - it's running great on 14.whatever - most of the changes that do filter down to an old phone like mine really don't interest me. I'll wait to experience iOS 15 when I buy a new phone and at least by that point most of the features Apple has promised will have been pushed out in later updates.

I think IOS 15 was a great update. I downloaded it as soon as it was released. Live text, focus and Safari are all great features I use on the daily. Was it an exciting update, No. But it did incorporate some useful features, Yes.

Gazing at the iPhone SE I bought last year with wistful wonder at how I can still possibly experience the treasured tactile presence of that precious Touch ID button after Apple so luridly and publicly banished it from the kingdom after the iPhone 7, iPhone 8, and iPhone SE brought over the temptation of Face ID ... wait, is this a dream?
