Speaking for myself, I am on iOS 15 and don't care all that much about the CSAM feature. That said, I can see why others would assess the small potential benefits from catching people dumb enough to upload illegal content to iCloud and find those benefits lacking compared to the risks of giving Apple backdoor on-device access. Saying "If you have nothing to hide" in conversations about respecting privacy is literally the most cliched and thoughtless approach an individual can take, and I hope you take some time to reflect on why you would gravitate to that talking point.

Why are you worried about a (non-existent) back door when this only comes into play if you open the front door? Right now, Apple has the cryptographic key to see every photo you upload onto icloud. Wouldn’t you prefer that they did not?

Is it not possible to have concerns over both and not want to add additional security vulnerabilities?

Not if it means building in tools to search my photos, on my device, against, opaque to Apple, third party databases to be determined later (in an ongoing way over time and subject to pressures and changes)

For such a lackluster release (in terms of features) it’s amazing how many bugs there are. Half of the major features have been delayed, and they weren’t that amazing and earth shattering to begin with. SharePlay? Cool, but not earth shattering

Still no FindMy update for AirPods or legacy contacts, or iCloud relay, or SharePlay or updates for AirPod Pro users with hearing loss. Just a revamped notification Lock Screen and a fancy “Focus” feature. The latter two features would be ideal for a iOS 14.9 update, as they are such small minor quality of life improvements.
Lackluster release? I think not. If you are talking about iOS, then maybe. But iPad OS has some really important new features that make it far from lackluster. The most important of these are the improved multi-tasking features. They make the whole iPad experience SO much more useful. Focus isn't as big a deal for me because I am retired but I suspect its features would be very useful if I were still working, especially if I were working from home. So not a lackluster release IMHO--at least with regard to iPad OS.

The one bug I think I'm encountering, at least on my new iPad mini 6, is the touch bug. I had been attributing the touch problems I was having to the tiny text and icon size on the mini 6 but maybe it's the touch bug. I'm not appreciating an issue on my mini 5 or iPhone 12 Pro, so I can't be sure.

No guarantee as you mentioned, but I am assuming they are smart enough to keep 14 without CSAM. I will not be upgrading to 15 or purchase any new Apple devices until we get clarification on this.
I agree. Apple needs to provide clarification on their CSAM feature rollout plans. It is too confusing and disorienting the longer that Apple drags this out.

According to Apple's CSAM landing page: https://www.apple.com/child-safety

Update as of September 3, 2021: Previously we announced plans for features intended to help protect children from predators who use communication tools to recruit and exploit them and to help limit the spread of Child Sexual Abuse Material. Based on feedback from customers, advocacy groups, researchers, and others, we have decided to take additional time over the coming months to collect input and make improvements before releasing these critically important child safety features.

I wonder if anyone on the MacRumors forums knows of anyone who has been contacted by Apple for their feedback? Does Apple have an official channel or mechanism in place for Apple to collect this feedback?

I think the difference is that it’s on device.
That’s what makes it creepy to some.
Most people know that uploading photos or any data to any cloud service, even apples, is basically you giving away your privacy.
Apple servers, Google servers, Amazon servers, they all use the same servers.
Theoretically you shouldn’t have anything to worry about, but Technology isn’t perfect and security breaches are a real possibility.
The difference with this is that it’s something happening on your device. Most assume, including me, that something I would do on my device would stay on my device, unless I specifically decide to upload it to a cloud service.
Apple scanning the photos after they’ve been uploaded to iCloud? They’ve been doing that for years, I personally couldn’t care less if they do that.
Apple scanning the photos on my device, before they even touch the cloud? That’s where things can get a little messy in my opinion.
Like I said, personally doesn’t bother me, but it’s completely valid if it bothers someone else. As long as they understand how it works and aren’t just spreading false rumors about Apple “doing mass surveillance and working with the big bad left,” which I’ve been seeing a lot and is just complete nonsense.

I found this awesome bug in iOS 15 and iPadOS 15 where printing quotation marks in either Pages or Word in Times New Roman (no other fonts) results in the second pair of quotation marks (the “close” quotation marks) to print (not display, it shows fine on the screen) at the height of a comma.

In other words, quotes always print like this with TNR: “example„

Again, this is a new bug, no other fonts display this issue, and it happens with both Pages and Word (thus it is an iOS/iPadOS level issue).

Clearly, from the get go, Apple had a smaller number of Public Beta testers, and might have even carried into the employee subset as well. So I am not really surprised things are a bit more bumpy than usual. We all know that pretty much every new whole version change, is always more rough around the edges then the supplemental releases.

There is much more functionality and changes, not surprised some things just fall into the cracks. I'm not aware of ANY software that is virtually flawless from it's initial major release, so this is no different.

I may be wrong, but I believe that if you upgraded to iOS 15 from iOS 14 you can't go back.
You can but you need to put the phone into DFU mode ie a full factory reset and then reinstall iOS 14.8 from your Mac or pc.

It’s not straightforward.

I don't recall ever seeing an early adoption rate this low before.
I wanna say 13 was this low at first, since a ton of media came out about how buggy it was. Maybe 1 or 2 more iterations, and we should be seeing more flow in ... I hope.

Right, because iOS was *so* much more stable under jobs…
People conveniently forget about this.
Or The overheating iPhone 3GS, or the absolutely disastrous launch of iPhone OS 2.0 and mobile me on the same day, which literally left their servers completely destroyed for like five days.
Or the fact that push notifications were supposed to launch in September 2008… and instead launched in June 2009.
Or how on the initial launch of iOS 5, the iPad home screen gesture controls only worked on the second generation iPad, even though the OS supported the first generation iPad? Luckily there was enough complaining that they added it to the first GEN iPad in a software update.
I think I’ve made my point
Don't forget about antenna-gate with the iPhone 4.

It is possible. But by doing on-device scanning, it enables apple to finally throw away the keys and fully encrypt the photos, while still preventing them from having to host child porn.

It should be noted that Apple has not said they have any intention to go full encryption.
People have speculated about that being their ultimate goal, but to my knowledge they are not on record saying that anywhere.

If I've missed that, please do correct me.

It would behoove Apple to more completely and transparently lay out their full plans.
Hopefully their delay on CSAM implementation may allow for that.

It feels like they’re finding 5 new things that are broken or horribly bugged out in this release every day. Honestly I might just wait for 15.1 before updating. I really hoped they would at least have a 15.0.1 patch out by now.

Does downloading iOS 15 mean I agree to their terrible CSAM plans?
Unsure if this even is a factor, Apple has most libraries in the server "cloud." just downloading a new iOS device doesn't change that people have things already hosted and searchable.

As for this update? seems like a great time to wait on 15.1 and/or 15.11 updates (never good to be in the first batch of updates, too many tech gremlins

Downgraded back to 14.8 after 48 hours on 15.0 on my XR.

Overall performance was terrible and obviously not optimised correctly for the A12.

Safari UI was both slower and a worse user experience.

I thought 13 was bad on launch. This is a new record.

It’ll take a lot for me to upgrade to 15.x - and Monterey.

it’s not just the bugs and overall lack of quality it’s that Safari - which I love in 14 and Big Sur - is awful.
If you have already installed iOS 15, how do you downgrade back to iOS 14?

Please share. :)

Yeah - I fully expect Apple to proceed ahead -- quietly.
I think the lesson they really learned was "don't talk about controversial stuff and just do it behind the scenes"

Which is of course abhorrent if true.
1) - my trust is not gone, yet! (although my eyes are open a lot wider)
2) - if they did the sleazy thing such as implementing this behind the scenes, then trust would not only be gone, it would be shot, burned and the ashes rocketed into outer space.
3) - No ifs or butts, Apple will proceed ahead. They have said so in their statement.
4) - Apple is free to run their platforms as they see fit, and I have the right to buy into their platforms or not. So I don't have any problems with that. I will choose not if they implement any kind of on device policing.
5) - I expect all the devices that I have already purchased before the announcement of this "feature" to continue to be supported without on device policing until the device is considered end of life. Otherwise, I will be expecting a full refund for those devices.
6) - If on device policing is CANCELLED, then I can resume my normal Apple life where they take my money and all is good.

iOS 15 is worst major release for oldest phones , period, from cellular network to safari every thing is buggy on my iPhone 8 Plus
