Fantastic news.
It is reassuring that they also make sure that this will not work unless on the largest, most recent models; anything more permissive would deprive that users of lesser devices from a reason to remember they should have upgraded or taken a larger device.

While I wasn't really ever that bothered by the percentage not being shown on/near the battery when it was removed with the notch phones, I'm glad Apple decided to add this back in, it's a quick glance feature that puts some peoples' minds at ease.

tldr; Glad it's back.

Battery percentage can be toggled on and off in the Settings app in the Battery section. The battery percentage feature appears to be available on most iPhones that have a notch, but it does not appear to be an option on the iPhone 12 mini, iPhone 13 mini, iPhone 11, or iPhone XR perhaps due to space constraints.

Makes sense. The XR and 11 have lower resolution LCD screens, so there's probably not enough pixels. The minis are probably just too small for it to be effective.

And with this limited space since the notch and upcoming pills. Wow.
Sure this took a lot! of development effort. OMG 😳

Apple giveth, Apple taketh, Apple gives it again in its immense wisdom and will be touted as a new function in the “most advanced phone OS”.
What changed from the time they removed to now?

Incredible innovation by Apple. The years of R&D, trial/error, user testing, design innovations, discovering science and new arenas of physics that must have made this possible: stunning!

I wonder what incredible, unthinkable innovation awaits us in iOS 17!

If the 11 Pro 5.8” got it, then I see no reason why the X and Xs couldn’t get it. At least the excuse for the XR and 11 could be the low resolution.

I’m actually surprised they didn’t limit it to the smaller notch iPhones.
This might because of hardware issues. Pixel per inch of the display or the lack of the bionic chipsets.
This feature was in development for a long time. It’s not that easy to bring it to all phones. Please upgrade to a more recent device to got all of the features 😅

Weird, I never asked for this, didn't even cross my mind, but seeing it makes sense and makes me wonder why it's never had that before.

Probably inter… 😳 … wid… interactive? Widgets 😧😧
OMG but probably only for newer device with the latest bionic chipsets.

With the fifth beta of iOS 16, Apple has updated the battery icon on iPhones with Face ID to display the specific battery percentage rather than just a visual representation of battery level. The new battery indicator is available on iPhone 12 and iPhone 13 models, with the exception of the 5.4-inch iPhone 12/13 mini. It is also available on the iPhone X and the iPhone XS.

Battery percent has not been present on iPhones that have Face ID because of the lack of space on either side of the notch that houses the TrueDepth camera hardware. The new design adds the specific battery level to the battery icon, providing a better idea of battery status at a glance.

In iOS 15 and earlier versions of iOS, the battery icon shows a visual of the battery level, but it does not provide a specific percent. To get that information, iPhone users need to swipe down into Control Center or swipe over to the Today center view to see the battery widget.

The battery icon changes colors based on the status of the battery, and the color of the iPhone's wallpaper. When charging, for example, the battery icon is green and shows a charging indicator.

iOS 16 beta 5 is available to developers at the current time, and Apple will be releasing a public beta in the near future.

Does this not work on iPhone 13 mini? I don’t see the option and just installed beta 5
