With the fifth beta of iOS 16, Apple has updated the battery icon on iPhones with Face ID to display the specific battery percentage rather than just a visual representation of battery level. The new battery indicator is available on iPhone 12 and iPhone 13 models, with the exception of the 5.4-inch iPhone 12/13 mini. It is also available on the iPhone X and the iPhone XS.

Battery percent has not been present on iPhones that have Face ID because of the lack of space on either side of the notch that houses the TrueDepth camera hardware. The new design adds the specific battery level to the battery icon, providing a better idea of battery status at a glance.

In iOS 15 and earlier versions of iOS, the battery icon shows a visual of the battery level, but it does not provide a specific percent. To get that information, iPhone users need to swipe down into Control Center or swipe over to the Today center view to see the battery widget.

The battery icon changes colors based on the status of the battery, and the color of the iPhone's wallpaper. When charging, for example, the battery icon is green and shows a charging indicator.

Battery percentage can be toggled on and off in the Settings app in the Battery section. The battery percentage feature appears to be available on most iPhones that have a notch, but it does not appear to be an option on the iPhone 12 mini, iPhone 13 mini, iPhone 11, or iPhone XR perhaps due to space constraints.

iOS 16 beta 5 is available to developers at the current time, and Apple will be releasing a public beta in the near future.

Great to see! But, controversially.. Am I the only one that prefers the current design over this new one?

I think this is in preparation for iPhone 14 Pro with no notch. The battery percentage may be shown separate to the battery indicator, showcasing the additional status bar space. Not the case for notched iPhones.

The 14s have a notch and the 14 Pros have cutouts the same width as the notch.

lmao. so many comments of people loving this "coming back"

in a forum where when jailbreaks get posted the commentary is "hurrrrrr what do people jailbreak for anyway??"

this. things like this. to enable the user to have the choice when apple doesnt include things like this. just to have a simple on/off toggle for battery percentage at a glance, not having to swipe for it...

There won’t be that much of additional space. Don’t imagine that Apple is going for another design in the 14 Pro. But let’s see.

The fact it's coming from Apple. It's authentic! But I see your point about jailbreak.

...okay? mopar can sell me a mopar brake pad, and sure it's "authentic." it doesn't make it necessarily better than many of the brake pad options I could choose to buy at a local parts store, and in some cases is an inferior product. but they'll be happy to charge more for it, and offer me a dealer who will vastly exceed the cost of a reputable local mechanic.

if the perk is "authentic", then iOS should most assuredly have its restrictions released right away, because i'm not going to fall for apple's nonsense on the basis of "yay they did it!"

we should all take note that this particular "feature" being news is not a good sign.

Didn’t realize a simple swipe was so exhausting

This should've been on the original iPhone X! Also, shouldn't the shaded region inside the battery's icon decline/fill up as the battery's state of charge decreases or increases? This iteration looks weird.
