Also, as long as you don’t have the Dev or Public Beta Profile installed, it won’t look specifically for a new version number, it would look for a new build number, and one that’s officially released. So if we’re all on 16 and another release of 16 comes out with a larger build number, we’d be offered it.
Same goes for during a restore or setting up a new device.
Also also, you can’t restore from a NEWER build, only an older or same build, unless it’s the same version of OS. And generally during the beta testing process, all of the betas are still being signed so you can still restore to a prior beta. Although now that 16 has officially been released, I’m not sure anything but the official release would work.
Here's a good example- Looking at the signing status of the .ipsw files for the iPhone 14 Pro Max, both iOS 16 (20A362) and iOS 16.0.1 (20A371) are being signed. Unless this changes, this would mean that if you get a new phone on Friday, you should have no problem restoring from a backup created while also on the official release.
