iOS 17 is not due until the Fall of 2023. If Apple is expected to announce Apple's AR/VR headset in the Spring of 2023 the upcoming iOS will be carrying the reference codes for xrOS. I don't think we're too far off.
Just because Apple could announce a piece of equipment this Spring, doesn’t mean the software to run it will be instantly available. How long after the Spring event is WWDC23? Two months? So, people stew on it for a bit until they hear the technical details this Summer.

Agreed! It won't be available instantly however I think Apple will give enough time to the developers to start testing out the software and developing apps.

That's because you probably switched channel by removing the beta profile, which would need a full image download, not just the delta
Well, actually I didn't remove that beta profile since iOS 16.1 betas, so I don't know if this could be the reason.
