I would not be terribly surprised to see 16.5.1 tomorrow (yes I am aware that it will be Friday).
16.3.1 was a rare Friday release so it's possible.

The beta version numbers of the macOS Big Sur and Monterey releases have been bumped up today from 11.7.8 to 11.7.9 and 12.6.7 to 12.6.8. It sounds like the previous version numbers are now reserved for a more imminent update which would suggest security fixes across the board and Apple would like to get them out the door ASAP as possible.

Yeah. Smells like another zero day fix. Getting more frequent, it appears.

I’m sure they save the current version of iOS for last as it’s the largest install base.

I am still using 16.5. Just confusing why we would be on 16.5.1 for 1 week and then the next 16.6 to the public
Perhaps you are expecting the 16.6 to the public a lot earlier then Apple has it planned. It's also tethered to the other OS's progression. So even if you think of iOS 16.6 mostly, that is not what Apple sees of this beta cycle. The absence of SDK notes doesn't mean it gets done any sooner. They also need to fix some issues with MacOS 13.4 vs the new M2 Ultra based Macs. Thats how I expect this beta roll out to proceed. ;)

I'm expecting the RC this week

If I recall correctly, iOS 16.6 was referred to as a stability and bug fix version. Yeah, I haven’t lost my hope, so instead of installing 16.5.1 whenever it is released, I think I’ll definitely wait for 16.6 to make a clean install.

It’s probably one of the last updates iPhone X and iPhone 8 users will get aside from security updates so there’s probably a level of stability and reliability this update will target.
