For perspective, it costs less than $1/yr to charge your iPhone.
Exactly... Plus, I need access to energy when I need access to it. I already try to do things like washing and drying clothes in the evening, after "peak" usage periods are over. But generally, I'm not going to inconvenience myself by not getting tasks done when I've got the free time to do them, just because some energy graph tells me it would be more "environmentally friendly" to postpone them.

If this is a real concern for the public utilities? They can incentivize behaviors by giving people discounted rates during the preferred times to use power.

I still don’t understand how this is supposed to work like how do you even know where your electricity is coming from unless you have your own solar on the roof
You don't need to know anything. The service knows your location and your local provider. After that it can look up what the current generation mix is. It can then calculate what the mix is from available sources.

If you're lucky you're in a place with a relatively green grid (BC, Quebec, Ontario in Canada. Many US states have over half their energy production from Wind or Hydro). The UK has been over 60% wind generation several times in the last few years.

Apple, IF you are THAT concerned about electricity usage STOP offering WIRELESS charging!
wireless charging is so much less energy efficient vs plugging in ...

and I almost always charge overnight when renewables (solar, wind ...) are not available ...

I would not have survived with an iPhone the past 5 years without Qi charging. The Lightning connector on my 3 separate iPhones has failed me miserably, and I'm not rough with my phones. No idea why I had such bad luck with Lightning, but I charge my iPhone 13 Pro using only Qi charging now. I never connect a cable because it wouldn't work even if I tried. USB-C could not have come soon enough, and I used to be a huge Lightning advocate. Just a faulty connector design, unfortunately.

What's missing in your argument is that Apple is about pushing technology forward. Sure, Qi charging may be less efficient, but Apple's mission is to make it more efficient. The use of magnets allows for a perfect alignment, reducing energy loss. Apple actually donated MagSafe to the next major version of Qi, so now it will become standard across the industry.

It can and does - certain solar/battery products will top up the battery when energy prices are low and release electricity when the price is higher.

Some system will turn on your EV charger when grid prices are low.

Yeah - but so much of this is set up by the utility companies to be far from useful. EG. Ameren here in Illinois brags all the time about offering a "smart usage" option to save money using power during their off-peak times. The catch? They publish rates that change DAILY! So you're expected to literally review the chart each night to find out when they decided rates will be discounted the next day! If you just try to do something like assuming usage between hours of, say, 8PM to 6AM should be cheaper? That'll work for a little while, but they'll suddenly throw you a curveball where rates are extremely high until 9PM or any time after 4AM on a given day.

I'm all for clean energy, and I have no problem with this being a feature, but I doubt I'm going to use it. I will charge my phone when I need to charge it. It's on the energy companies to ramp up their clean energy sources so they become the predominant power source.

so for example in California, there is the CA ISO and they can provide you to the minute where the power in CA is coming from, they have a public website for that.
Hmm, I'll have to see if my state has something like this. It won't really affect how I do things, I just find it odd that in an area completely powered by "clean" energy...this doesn't reflect that.

It is really good seeing such features... and Apple Silicon has reduced energy consumption massively... however, if they keep refreshing iPhones and other products every year... these gains are lost... If they switched to a more significant upgrade every 2 years... devices would be supported longer, there would be more time to refine and test, and consequently the business would be 'greener'.

I was not going to get into the efficiency of MagSafe vs Qi, merely pointing out that wireless in general if quite a bit less efficient, MagSafe by at least 10-15% whereas Qi is at least 20% ...compared to wired.

All this brainwashing BS

Nature thrives on what they try to eliminate...
It’s amazing how elites with gargantuan carbon footprints were able to convince large numbers of gullible sheep that they urgently need to eat crickets while taking a cold shower. They even fly private jets to various “climate” summits and the drones still eat it up, quite jaw dropping really.

I don't see the available locations in the article anywhere so am I right in understanding this is worldwide? Or is it America only again? They do know that there are other countries out there, yes, given that New York is named accordingly? 😂
