It’s amazing how elites with gargantuan carbon footprints were able to convince large numbers of gullible sheep that they urgently need to eat crickets while taking a cold shower. They even fly private jets to various “climate” summits and the drones still eat it up, quite jaw dropping really.

No, what’s actually amazing is that you were so easy to believe this stuff you wrote.

I just knew this post would bring out all the Karen’s.

how do you even know where your electricity is coming from
Thanks to the power companies installing smart meters and now operating at time of use billing it would be fairly easy for Apple to know.

Using GPS and triangulation the iPhone can pinpoint your exact location. That location can be cross referenced with state and federal databases to provide the name of the utility providing that locations power.
Then it is just a matter of accessing one of the many real time databases for information regarding originating power production.

Timed energy prices never benefit the customer. The prices will always be the highest when customers need power the most. I know that problem from train tickets.
Agreed. They tried to roll out mandatory smart meters here in Australia and met with fierce resistance. The only thing about 'smart' meters is that they're smart for the energy company; they no longer need to pay people to read the meters, and can charge whatever the hell they like during peak times to try and force people onto less grid onerous times so that they don't need to upgrade their network. Smart meters = happy shareholders not happy customers.

I don't see the available locations in the article anywhere so am I right in understanding this is worldwide? Or is it America only again? They do know that there are other countries out there, yes, given that New York is named accordingly? 😂
Well am not seeing it here in the uk! am happy for it to stay that way lol

we don’t even get the live voicemail feature!

really? gonna disable from day one, makes no sense to me
It’s quite baffling to see so many hostile reactions towards any step a company makes on reducing their footprint, or when they support customers on doing the same. Totally on board to watch out for greenwashing, but this here is legit.

Will this be used in Asia and Africa, the two biggest polluters on the planet and have the nine most polluted rivers on the planet?
“I’m not doing anything because an African river is polluted” Any idea how ignorant this sounds? Most likely coming from an inhabitant of the world’s second biggest greenhouse gases emitter.

All this brainwashing BS

Nature thrives on what they try to eliminate...
I know everything needs to be a culture war these days in the US, but there is something called science that can explain to you what the anthropogenic greenhouse effect is. Not accepting this as fact is as delusional as being a flat earther. You might not agree with how society tries to address these issues, but it doesn’t make the scientific underpinnings less true.

No they are not. They do not have grid access. Power companies are not revealing privileged information.

What they are most surely doing is making a bunch of random assumptions and waving their hands.

People who know where their power comes from can tell you that what Apple tells them makes no sense.

Please report back when you try the feature. It will probably say you have 1-2 hrs of “clean” energy per day, despite being in a province with only wind and hydro.
In California, they are. Energy sources are compiled by the Independent System Operator and live charts are published here as load increases leading up to the high temperature for the day, power generation in excess of hydro/wind/solar is met by natural gas, emitting CO2.

I see it less of a tool for charging your phone as for running more hungry appliances during peak load. But time-of-use rates penalize that anyway. And I have no idea if other regions have this sort of data available.

I'm all for clean energy, and I have no problem with this being a feature, but I doubt I'm going to use it. I will charge my phone when I need to charge it. It's on the energy companies to ramp up their clean energy sources so they become the predominant power source.
This isn't for iPhone charging. That feature came out like 6 months ago, and you already are using it unless you specifically turned it off.

This is well intentioned, yet total BS.
Likely true. However, it could still be used for good things in the future, Like smart washers/dryers, EV chargers, and water heaters that wait for clean energy. (Before anyone asks, your water heater can be off for hours before the water gets cold. It could skip a couple hours that don't have clean energy and you wouldn't notice unless you use the entire tank every time you use hot water.)

If this is a real concern for the public utilities? They can incentivize behaviors by giving people discounted rates during the preferred times to use power.
This is already being done where I live, and people get mid-cycle billing updates showing how much energy they're using at which time, and how much it costs, and what to do to lower energy usage for the rest of the cycle. It's very useful.

Yeah - but so much of this is set up by the utility companies to be far from useful. EG. Ameren here in Illinois brags all the time about offering a "smart usage" option to save money using power during their off-peak times. The catch? They publish rates that change DAILY! So you're expected to literally review the chart each night to find out when they decided rates will be discounted the next day! If you just try to do something like assuming usage between hours of, say, 8PM to 6AM should be cheaper? That'll work for a little while, but they'll suddenly throw you a curveball where rates are extremely high until 9PM or any time after 4AM on a given day.
No, you would expect the computer you’re holding to call the API routinely to check the live rates.

yeah cuz up to 20 watts charging is somehow gonna make a difference.

I charge my phone during the lowest cost timeframe on my electric company TOU rate sheet, which is overnight.

I actually don’t mind this. I had turned off clean charging because I didn’t even think it was available in my area. Apparently it is and it’s during the middle of the night when I’m charging my phone anyway so why not, l’ll turn it back on and give it a shot.
