Pretty easy to think of other sorts of stuff that this type of AI would be useful for.

Very trivially obvious is all those recycling symbols, especially if paired with your location to know what you are and aren’t supposed to put in the blue bin.

Also … think of all the various screws and nuts and bolts around you that you occasionally need to tighten or loosen. The phone can measure sizes … wouldn’t it be cool if it could tell you to grab a #2 Philips screwdriver, or a 6mm socket (with a footnote that a 1/4” socket will probably do in a pinch)?

You could read the manufacturer codes on your tires and instantly know if they’re too old or if there are any open recalls.

All sorts of possibilities …

Hmmm....Vision Pro handyman app would be pretty nice. Tool identification, part identification...

I really am loving all of the object and information recognition features they are building into the Camera and Photo apps. These are the uses for AI that I think will prove useful for most people as a system-wide, easily accessible feature. I hope they can soon catch up with what Google Lens is currently able to do in terms of searching with an image!

Loving some of the built in tricks the cameras can do on modern phones these days. For instance, I forgot to bring a barcode scanner to a new site I am commissioning, no bother, use the camera app, use the text recognition feature, copy on iPhone - Paste on MacBook Pro into our corporate inventory application.

Saved me so much manual typing where I would no doubt get some of the text wrong!

I’d the love ability to just turn off scanning my photos. We don’t have a choice, but I just want a camera and photo storage built in an OS. Make the photo processing to enhance them and scanning photo libraries to support helpful features an opt-out option at a minimum.

Why can’t you just not use the feature? Just don’t tap the things you don’t want to use…

If only it could finish to identify people in my phots after 13 years of using Iphone... only Google can. Tim does not use his own products. Half baked products every year for such expensive devices...

and what about symbols on Safari toolbar and finder’s toolbar?

There are no label whatsoever so I don’t know what those buttons do with those ridiculous symbols

Then they would have to have custom faceplates for each language. This way is cheaper. I assume the manufacturers explain the symbols in the user manual but that is usually tossed out with the box..
Some might. Other manuals will just say: “depends on model” because the maker just made one manual to cover 5 years of different models in 30 different countries.

Seems like a quiet but cool move for the Vision Pro and whatever comes after. Gazing at symbols in the real world while wearing the Vision Pro, and tapping your fingers together to get an explanation pop-up, that’s AR at its best!

I'm surprised at two things.

Firstly, I though Google lens already did this - but it doesn't. To me, this function is just a translation, albeit from symbols to text and locigcally fits into the google translate world.

Secondly, I though these symbols were taught in high school. I'm guessing they're not (or a large part of iphone users didn't finish high school ;)
