Sheesh, I hate hearing my voice on recordings, and those are *actually* me! :p

Interesting tech for those that need it, however.
I was rather hoping the system could improve my voice a bit! There's some words that I'm simply rubbish at saying!

What a scary world we live in. This is a terrible, terrible idea.

I agree. If used properly, it would be a great new assistive technology.

But of course, every scaammer across the globe will find a way to steal voices and impersonate people for nefarious means.

It's already been happening with AI. Someone called a mother and simulated her daughter's (who was away at college) voice and tried to get a ransom with a fake kidnapping.

No one is going to find a way to abuse this to create AI-generated false recordings of famous people and upload them to social media to spread misinformation. Absolutely no one.

edit: I'm joking obviously as better tools for doing this already exist

I got invited to try the beta version of this but could not make any sense of the words it asked me to read: Longing, rusted, furnace, daybreak, seventeen, benign, nine, homecoming, one, freight car

Does anyone have any idea what is going on here?

Without knowing the protections built-in, it's hard to say whether this is a scary idea or not. It may actually be very difficult to input someone else's voice into this feature.

All I know, for someone with ALS, it's a wonderful idea.

Man, was there a contest to see who could post the most fear mongering nonsense about this feature the fastest?

"Scammers will use this for bad things, what a terrible idea!" -- Scammers *already* do this. Apple building an accessibility feature to help disabled (or future disabled) people has absolutely nothing to do with whether or not scammers will be capable of generating your voice to use in scams. Even if scammers were not capable of generating AI voices (which they are), the technology being in use by scammers still wouldn't have anything to do with this feature existing.

"Someone will steal phone and use the voice, bad idea!" -- If someone has stolen your phone and is able to unlock it and access your custom voice, you've already suffered a massive security breach of the worst possible kind and whether or not they can use your simulated voice or not is probably the least of your problems, right? They already have *everything*. If the voice is stored in iCloud (highly unlikely) and a hacker gains access to your iCloud account... well, same thing, right? They have everything, they don't need your voice anymore.

Can we stop acting like fear-mongering is some sort of smart or clever thing to do? Before you hit the "Post reply" button, try to think critically about what you are saying, and consider that you might be wrong or at the very least thinking very short-sightedly. This is a great accessibility feature and amazing technology, it's so weird that people's natural reaction to such a wonderful technological breakthrough is to fight over who can say it's a bad thing first.

Sometimes it feels like if iMessage E2E Encryption was announced today on MacRumors for the first time, all the replies would be people going, "Very bad feature, criminals will use it to hide their crimes, this shouldn't exist."

They need to hear you say certain consonant and vowel sounds in order to have enough audio to generate the voice from. The given words are to get you to give them those sounds. Presumably, they randomize them for security purposes.

After taking a second look at those words... they might have been trying to activate you. ;)

Apple this week previewed new iPhone, iPad, and Mac accessibility features coming later this year. One feature that has received a lot of attention in particular is Personal Voice, which will allow those at risk of losing their ability to speak to "create a voice that sounds like them" for communicating with family, friends, and others.

Personal-Voice-iPhone-Feature.jpeg

Those with an iPhone, iPad, or newer Mac will be able to create a Personal Voice by reading a randomized set of text prompts aloud until 15 minutes of audio has been recorded on the device. Apple said the feature will be available in English only at launch, and uses on-device machine learning to ensure privacy and security.

Personal Voice will be integrated with another new accessibility feature called Live Speech, which will let iPhone, iPad, and Mac users type what they want to say to have it be spoken out loud during phone calls, FaceTime calls, and in-person conversations.

Apple said Personal Voice is designed for users at risk of losing their ability to speak, such as those with a recent diagnosis of ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis) or other conditions that can progressively impact speaking ability. Like other accessibility features, however, Personal Voice will be available to all users. The feature will likely be added to the iPhone with iOS 17, which should be unveiled next month and released in September.

"At the end of the day, the most important thing is being able to communicate with friends and family," said Philip Green, who was diagnosed with ALS in 2018 and is a member of the ALS advocacy organization Team Gleason. "If you can tell them you love them, in a voice that sounds like you, it makes all the difference in the world — and being able to create your synthetic voice on your iPhone in just 15 minutes is extraordinary."

I can see this going wrong in so many ways.

So make it easier for them?

Yes, we live in a world where we can't have nice things.

Do you also want to get rid forks because a criminal can use one to put someone's eye out? That's about how much sense this position of yours makes, in case you somehow think it actually makes sense in any way whatsoever.

So what, will they finally add in iOS 17 split screen multitasking like iPad has and Android phones have had for some time?!?! 🤦🏼

I have some trepidation about the technology too. It could be used to impersonate your voice and it would, I imagine, be very hard to detect over the phone.

Imagine someone with nefarious goals. They could use this to impersonate someone's voice, call up their family members to wire over some money or obtain bank account information etc.
