I don't want my phone to sound like me. Prefer to sound like Morgan freeman or Sean Connery or Tom Hanks. I guess Android would come with such options.

It’s 2023 and Apple allegedly brings deepfake into Everyone’s phone.
Just like other says, criminals, particularly scammers, will LOVE this feature.
In the meantime, this can also be used to help people.
I don’t know what I feel. I just hope my parents can distinguish deepfake from my real voice.

Something doesn't sit right with me that this feature with such deep impact will require people to continue being an Apple customer to use it
But people who do happen to be Apple customers will get to use it. Isn't that a win? Must the glass always be half-empty?

At your service, personal assistant.

Hopefully they offer other voices like Jarvis, Majel Barrett, Spock, HAL and SJ.

This WILL be abused by scammers.
There are already cheap options that do a similar thing. Are they being abused? Maybe but there are safeguards. For example: https://www.wsj.com/articles/i-cloned-myself-with-ai-she-fooled-my-bank-and-my-family-356bd1a3

Plus, there are AI (machine learning) tools that can be used that would be much easier to use than this to scam.

Here’s part of Apple’s security for this feature: “Users can create a Personal Voice by reading along with a randomized set of text prompts to record 15 minutes of audio on iPhone or iPad. This speech accessibility feature uses on-device machine learning to keep users’ information private and secure.”

There are much easier ways to scam people. This sounds like it will be super secure to put it mildly.

Anyone saying this can be used for scams should write out all the steps needed for that to work.

BAD idea in my view. Has many more nefarious uses than the few positives that can come out of this.

It's like the old saying goes: the road to hell is paved with good intentions.

What’s the saying? The road to hell is paved with good intentions?

I think this sounds like a really great meaningful feature for those unfortunate folks, but potential for abuse is so high.

Don’t have a solution to prevent that, nor am K flat out opposed to the technology, but I just hope this doesn’t further open Pandora’s box.

Wow, same thought at the same time. Haha

I just want Siri to sound more realistic. Or like Jarvis, a really stupid Jarvis (not stupid sounding, just assuming capabilities)

I really don’t get how it’s going to create a voice sounding like me in 15 minutes. You’d think it would make more sense to create a voice sounding like how I sound now.

And, it’s potentially a dangerous paradox. If I try it and it tells me that it CAN’T create my voice… is that because my voice will no longer exist in 15 minutes? Is it because I’m going to die or have my larynx ripped out by a sky leopaard? Then, would I be able to take steps to prevent my own demise thus upending the space/time continuum?

Going to enter a bug report imploring them to make it sound like me NOW… just too dangerous otherwise.

Magnificent technology however very dangerous as it will be used in the wrong way
On phone machine learning will stop some bad actors however others will use in a way it was not intended

Apple this week previewed new iPhone, iPad, and Mac accessibility features coming later this year. One feature that has received a lot of attention in particular is Personal Voice, which will allow those at risk of losing their ability to speak to "create a voice that sounds like them" for communicating with family, friends, and others.

Those with an iPhone, iPad, or newer Mac will be able to create a Personal Voice by reading a randomized set of text prompts aloud until 15 minutes of audio has been recorded on the device. Apple said the feature will be available in English only at launch, and uses on-device machine learning to ensure privacy and security.

Personal Voice will be integrated with another new accessibility feature called Live Speech, which will let iPhone, iPad, and Mac users type what they want to say to have it be spoken out loud during phone calls, FaceTime calls, and in-person conversations.

Apple said Personal Voice is designed for users at risk of losing their ability to speak, such as those with a recent diagnosis of ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis) or other conditions that can progressively impact speaking ability. Like other accessibility features, however, Personal Voice will be available to all users. The feature will likely be added to the iPhone with iOS 17, which should be unveiled next month and released in September.

"At the end of the day, the most important thing is being able to communicate with friends and family," said Philip Green, who was diagnosed with ALS in 2018 and is a member of the ALS advocacy organization Team Gleason. "If you can tell them you love them, in a voice that sounds like you, it makes all the difference in the world — and being able to create your synthetic voice on your iPhone in just 15 minutes is extraordinary."

Not sure how I feel about this.
Probably more terrifying than exciting. It doesn't seem like something that Apple would do.

This is meant to be an accessibility feature to help those who actually need it..... Unfortunately, yes, there is all too much room for abuse -- spammers, kids playing around and goofing off, fully able-bodied people with no disabilities and totally normal speaking voices using the feature/function for purposes other than for which it was specifically designed, etc., etc. I've already seen evidence of plans to do just that in posts right here on MR, and I'm sure that Twitter and Reddit are filled with posts from selfish people excited, eagerly anticipating this and the perceived fun in getting to play with a new toy/feature which is not meant for them and which they have no business tinkering with.

I'm not sure how y'all are suggesting that scammers can make it sound like a family member? It's not like the scammer can sample enough audio sources of someone in your family speaking, painstakingly edit it all together to reflect the on-screen prompts so that the Machine Learning can generate a mimic, and then type out responses to the person they're scamming so that the phone reads it aloud. If you think that's possible, someone do a proof of concept, post your results here. I'll be waiting.
What this guy said. Plus we all know how artificial voices sounded not that long ago. The voices produced from this are going to sound like Down syndrome versions of you probably. Not going to be rude. It will totally be obvious it’s an AI voice. But yeah the abuse from this technology as it progresses idk when is definitely terrifying. yikes yikes
