Since it's still in the OP, I'll say it one more time:

This is not a new feature: "iPad: Enable/Disable alert sounds for New Mail, Sent Mail, Calendar Alerts, Lock Sounds, Keyboard Clicks"

Here's a screenshot of my Settings->General->Sounds screen. Standard iPad iOS 3.2.2

But he didn't fix the "Enable/Disable alert sounds". Come on, that is very basic, how could he not have known that these were available before?

It seems they just swallowed what appadvice fed them.

Hah, when I was at the bank the other day, an iPhone received a message and alerted with their "tritone" tone. About 6 people reached into their purses and pockets (including me) to check our phones... It's simply ridiculous.

We need more tones!

I intentionally make my iPhone make that sound, just to see how many people will look at their phone :D.

While new tones are great, I want different vibrate patterns.

On my Razor, I'd have 3 short vibrate bursts to signify a text message, and long pulses for a call.

Now when I have my nice new iPhone on silent, I can't tell the difference between a text message, an email (from any account) or some other alert. It's also identical to the first second of a phone call. In fact if I get two messages back to back (not uncommon with work+personal email) it feels just like a phone call.

Maybe I should file a bug report with Apple, as the lack of this feature seems like a bug, not a deliberate decision

Arn,

I can confirm this. My iPad 3.2.2 has the same options for system sounds. There is nothing new here. Your source seems to be in error.

Just checked the SDK docs that comes with the beta. Looks like apps can indeed switch of the AirPlay button via a new player property. By default the button is visible so an app must switch it off explicitly if they don't want to support AirPlay. Maybe the Apple Youtube app had the button switched off for (SDK-) testing purposes?

Anyway, I'm disappointed to see that its not an 'always on' standard feature of the media player (as promised by Steve).

Those new texts tones are so much worse than the original. What good does an 8 second sound do? They must think people never get text messages. It almost seems they were meant to be ringtones, doesn't it?

Get students in trouble ;).

Just jailbreak your iOs device using one of the many now popular jailbreak utilities out there and then download AnyRing from the Cydia Store. You can choose to swap out your sms tone for any song you have in your iPod Library. Same with ringtones.

Good ole trusty "Tritone" is sticking on mine. Those are terrible. Beyond annoying. A simple 1 second noise is what a text needs to be.

I have had my iPad for a while now currently it's running 3.2.2 (I used to have the beta on it but you know...) and I have always had the option to show the bookmark bar also i have always Been able to go into the settings to see the mail sounds and calendar sounds so I don't get what's new about those?

Yeah I agree. I feel like Apple keeping the same small list of Text Tones is their way of free advertising... when you hear it go off you know it's an iPhone...

Wirelessly posted (Opera/9.80 (BlackBerry; Opera Mini/5.1.21052/20.2497; U; en) Presto/2.5.25)

Lol iphone doesn't let you use custom tunes for SMS? How bout ringtones? Guess u can brand a phone by limiting sounds based on what function they serve..but come on..

Hooray for new SMS tones finally!!! I just listened to them via Gizmodo though and though I really like Calypso and will probably use that one, they all (the others especially) are RIDICULOUSLY long! Text messages are meant to be quick. These things could double as ringtones almost. WTF is Apple thinking? It's like constant face_palm with them lately.

They really should allow us to put our own damn sounds to be honest. As bummed as I still am about that, I am happy to finally have some new sounds that the whole neighborhood doesn't already use.

Hey, I think this release includes copy and paste! ;)

Can we fix the picture on the OP, please? This is a little embarrassing. I'd expect this from an MS site, but Macrumors? Perhaps our standards are too high.

Am sorry to Chime in...

TERRIBLE SMS tones! Getting 30-40 of these per day. These guys have no ides. They should have become SHORTER... not longer....

It seems to show how far off developers at Apple stand from reality.

Just because YOU don't need a feature doesn't mean others don't. So don't get all b****y when Apple gives us an option for something that you personally don't happen to need.

I love my iPhone (and have purchased every generation of iPhone at launch). But for work, everyone on my team carries Android phones. We are all on call 24x7x365, and we get paged via SMS to our phones. The iPhone's quick "ding ding" tone won't wake anyone up for a critical page in the middle of the night. Since Apple does not give us an OPTION to have a long SMS tone, Apple does NOT get our corporate business. Period.

My cousin is a doctor and can't miss critical pages. The iPhone's "ding ding" SMS alerts mean that Apple won't get his business, either.

Some people in reality use phones as a critical business tool, or rely on them for serious needs, and need longer tones. Get off your high horse.

My main issue with the new ones is that the majority of them are way too long. There just isn't a good balance.
