it's ipad specific? bah...

Start a google search for the word you're looking for then scroll down the search results - it's at the bottom.

How do you activate airplay? Do you change setting on the mac or ip4 anywhere i dont see any options unless you have to have an apple tv to recognise you device before you can select i dont know:confused:

They can't release a new version of iOS that requires a beta version of iTunes to install can they? If iTunes 10.1 isn't ready then would it be a case of people still running 10.0.1 wouldn't be offered the iOS update for their device, even though Apple had officially released it, and it would only be when iTunes 10.1 comes out of beta that the update is seen?

I'm a bit confused, and guessing a lot here, but I'd like to understand what the real situation is.

They have not officially released 4.2 yet, so the beta iTunes thing is fine. Whenever the openly released 4.2 comes out (which almost always is the exact same file as the GM), you will have to upgrade iTunes before it will let you update the phone or iPad. In the past, they have made it so the older versions of iTunes did not see the new firmware so you have to update to proceed.

To those who have looked. for the new SMS tones, I assuem they only gave us the new tones and not the ability to use custom? I imagine someone would have mentioned that if they had. The new "tones" suck. All we need is three or 4 notes, not a song.

I updated itunes and tried to install 4.2 on my iphone4 but after a while itunes says it cannot restore to 4.2 and the iphone reboots into recovery mode.

using tiny umbrella to kick it out of recovery mode doesn't do anything, since the iphone just reboots and goes into recovery mode again.

this is a bit weird.

In order to use restore and sync you have to have iTunes 10.1 beta.

airprint??

Did anyone test the airprint? My lexmark Pro200 series does not have wifi printing at all other than the lexprint app which only prints photos at this stage.

I'm really looking forward to os4.2 and i hope it prints to lexmark printers as well

anyone tested this?

Is anybody else having the same issues as me?

Downloaded the 4.2 GM release
Install using 'restore and alt'
The software installs but iTunes fails to pull it from recovery mode

I have tried dowloading the iTunes 10.1 beta 2 links and they just download 10.0.1 - what is that all about?

I have tried tineumbrella - that doesn't pull the iPhone out of recovery after 4.2 but will in 4.1

What do I have to do?

You'll need 10.6.5 which I don't think is available to even the devs yet. It basically makes any printer that works with OS X available to print to from AirPrint.

Sorry..10.6.5?? I don't have a mac..i thought the new iphone OS4.2 will just use wifi printing to any printers without having the computer turned on?? (as long as the printer is on the same wifi network)

I have a wifi HP printer that's supposed to work directly via airprint.. how am I supposed to set it up if there's no airprint icon on my iphone? :)

If you're using Windows then iTunes 10.1 will enable AirPrint. AirPrint will only print directly to certain AirPrint compatible HP printers (there are currently only 3). For all other printers you have to have the computer on to print to them. Your computer basically turns into an expensive print server.

I thought Airprint was supposed to work with any networked bonjour printer! :(
I just tried in an office with 10+ bonjour printers and it cannot find any! bummer

As far as I understand it will. In order for any device to see a networked bonjour printer the computer will have to be on. Otherwise it won't be networked.

I've got it printing to a printer shared from a Windows 7 box using the Beta of iTunes (I didn't want to put 10.6.5 beta on my main machine!) - it works really well although as the machine is on a domain I have to log in each time to print. I think there is a way around that but as it's only temporary (once 10.6.5 is released I'll share it from my Mac) I haven't bothered investigating further

It only works with printers that have built-in support for AirPrint unless you share the printer though a computer. To print directly to a printer requires drivers, and I guess Apple don't want to have to support a myriad of drivers on their portable devices. This way, they have a single "driver" (AirPrint) and it will work either directly with a printer that supports it or through a computer where they can implement AirPrint for communication to the iPhone / iPad and use the OS drivers to talk to the printer. It's a pretty elegant solution really

but we have all sorts of bonjour printers in our network and my iphone cannot see any of them :(

Help, my itunes 10.1 beta cannot find the 4.2gm update, i've held down the ctrl key and clicked update and tried to hold down the alt key and both times it tells me my ipad has the latesst update 3.2.2?!

EDIT:

Based on this website (http://www.apple.com/ipad/software-update/) you are correct. "Print mail, photos, web pages, and more directly to a printer on a wireless network."

Any networked printer should work. I can't believe that printers hooked up to any Airport or rounter won't work, that would be a huge oversight. Perhaps these devices will require a firmware upgrade first though.

If any of them are HP printers, try using the HP iPrint app. There's an equivalent app for Brother printers as well (and I think Lexmark). Both are free.
